Tabs vs Spaces: A new show all about how Microsoft is making Windows a better place to write code.
Episode 1: Learn all about Windows Terminal and how it can improve your development workflow.
If you're a developer (or IT professional) who likes to use the command line and appreciates an organized, customized, fast workflow... this episode is for you!
• Run PowerShell, Ubuntu (Linux), Azure CLI, Oh-my-Zsh, and Posh-Git command lines all in one terminal via multiple tabs.
• Open each command line in separate split panes, all in the same terminal window using shortcut keys to jump between them.
• Customize your font, background colors or images, shortcut keys, and default profiles.
• Checkout some demos and see what's good.
Kayla Cinnamon will show you how to get started and here are some links to learn more:
To set up Oh-My-Zsh (like Kayla does in the video), just follow the steps in the GitHub readme: github.com/ohmyzsh/ohmyzsh
To set up Powerline (PowerShell with CascadiaCode font and Git color cues), Scott Hansellman wrote a great blog tutorial: www.hanselman.com/blog/HowToMakeAPrettyPromptInWindowsTerminalWithPowerlineNerdFontsCascadiaCodeWSLAndOhmyposh.aspx

The new terminal is great! I use it all the time. The main thing missing for me is a non-blurry transparent background, because sometimes you want to copy something/follow instructions from some page, etc, and the acrylic looks neat but doesn't help in that regard.

I've been using Windows Terminal since the first beta was released on the Windows Store, and I've been extremely pleased with it so far. The tabs, unicode support, padding support, and theming support are all appreciated. Coming from ITerm2 on MacOS, here are the only things I really miss: 1) Mouse support, especially for tmux and vim. You won't believe how much of a difference it makes to be able to scroll and click through tmux windows and panes while ssh'd into a remote server. I know they're currently working on this and I'm looking forward to when it gets added. 2) Right-click to open wt anywhere in Explorer. I'm hoping that once 1.0 comes out, Windows Terminal will slowly become more integrated with Windows itself so that we don't have to rely on registry hacks to make our workflow smoother. Overall, between VSCode, Windows Terminal, and WSL, it's clear that Windows is looking better than ever for developers and will only improve in the coming years. Exciting stuff!

One of the first things I noticed - as someone who uses Arch/zsh every day from the terminal - is how slow the startup and prompt of PowerShell are. The first load took 1396ms just to load the PS profile. That probably takes < 100 ms on a Unix box with zsh or bash. The prompts look like they're taking ~500ms to load. That's pretty brutal when you're working in the terminal all day.

Sorry -- this is a bit confusing. It's explained in the repo userguide, here: github.com/microsoft/terminal/blob/a97048a79808f427eb20465c618c091d578939fb/doc/user-docs/UsingJsonSettings.md#configuration-examples I think the simplest thing is to go to Windows Terminal settings... open the profiles.json file in VS Code, then right-click the profiles.json tab which will open a menu of options that includes "Reveal in Explorer" (or just use the shortcut Shift+Alt+R). This will take you to the folder location where the profiles.json file is kept. C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.WindowsTerminal_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState Place your image in that folder. Now to get your image to show up on the command line you want... let's say PowerShell... Ctrl+F in the profiles.json file you have open in VS Code and search for "PowerShell" to find the profile... then add the following lines: "backgroundImage": "ms-appdata:///Local/", "backgroundImageOpacity": 1, "backgroundImageStretchMode" : "none", "backgroundImageAlignment" : "topRight", I hope that resolves things for you!!

Command line Happiness? Marketing in full swing.
@MattWojo
@MattWojo 4 жыл бұрын
Nope -- that was me and I work on the content team. :) I felt that tagline (while a bit marketing'y) captured what the aim has been for the Windows Terminal -- give command line users what they are asking for and make them happy. It's open-source as well, so you can truly make it what you want it to be. Windows doesn't currently have a marketing team... they were disbanded... so you'll just have to make due with us content devs for now. :)

@@MattWojo You know what CLI users do not ask for? Things that are slow...that's why we use the command line. And that's why we won't use this crap. Here is a bit of advice on how to make software performant: When you manage to bloat a terminal emulator to be 18MiB in size, its time to admit that you fucked up, and go back to the drawing board.

Instead of fixing windows 10, like multiple interfaces for the same thing Microsoft just keep adding features. But 10 versions later finally they understood that is better to improve and fixing one OS than to build several ones, 10 versions later omg

I decided to give windows 10 20H1 a try this weekend. listen, I hope you read this. There seems to be a disconnect from the developer / sre / devops and this video. I been on a Mac & Linux machine since Windows 7 came out. I use mac & linux for host for the sole reason, I *live* and *breathe* in the terminal . The host os is a bootstrapper for the terminal / code editor ( emacs vscode intellij etc ) / browser. what you can do with terminal? built in man page lookup. example macos terminal Command-Shift-? lets me search man pages, Integrate more with the WSL linux. Have terminal help out with linux command line, put hooks for bash/zsh/fish. Tab Completion? have terminal extend those functionality. Most important. Keep it fast. Keep it in C++. No Electron crap. if the terminal is lower the L3 cache, all of a sudden instant responses. If you want more direct feedback reply with contact instructions.

I think that ConEmu is currently *the* best terminal emulator for Windows. Personally, I use some additions from *Cmder* (www.cmder.net) which makes it even greater! I believe clink (found in Cmder) is a necessity for anyone who doesn't use P1owerShell. The only competition to ConEmu (besides Windows Terminal) are the xterm.js-based terminals IMO, such as Hyper, Terminus Alpha, etc.
