Windshield removal using Fishing Line

Cheap, quick method of removing a windshield. The glass shop wanted $180.00 to remove and reinstall the windshield and they could not guarantee that they would not break it upon removal.
A KZfaq search netted the usual cold knife / utility knife removals with lots of broken windshields and struggles with pulling the knife through the urethane, and of course a plethora of wire based cutting tools. Since thin wire and braided fishing line have close to the same break strength with a clear advantage in flexibility going to the fishing line. I used 50# line as it was all I could find at the local hardware store, but I would recommend finding 100# line or better since I was always flirting with the breaking point of the 50# line. Most Fishing stores will sell you braided line by the yard. You should only need about 20 yards to be safe, in case you chaff line and break it you will have plenty of spare line. Make sure the line is of the braided variety as monofilament line would not have the same sharp edges and would be larger in diameter there by requiring more tension to cut the urethane.

someone like this guy makes america great again with intelligent and practical problem solving skills and ability to find ways to do more with less. thank you for inspiring me to try this method since I dont have much money to spend on a new windshield for a car I'm selling. Ive been able to remove a windshield with fishing line but I had a friend help me pull the line from the outside. anchoring the line inside allowed him to do it himself.

I am now back after almost 1 year! Last year I followed your technique on a car at the scrap yard, but I failed on the corners. Even with fishing line there was too much stress and the screen cracked. I also found my 90lb line broke on numerous occasions - this led me feeling quite despondent, especially as there were no other cars I could practice on. I had to wait for almost a year for another car to appear at a local scrap yard . But today I had success with a modified technique! This is the approached that worked for me: 1) I purchased some 300lbs braided line, and it never snapped once 2) I sprayed everything inside and outside with washing liquid for lubrication 3) I used a very thin knife to make a hole at all of the corners 4) I then used some Hazet cutting wire and Bahco BBS101 wire grip handles to saw a few inches round all the corners 5) Once the corners were cut, I tied the fishing line to the top of the steering wheel and cut all of the straights. I actually cut from the outside of the car, as I found it too cramped inside. I found I could pull the 300lbs line as hard as I wanted and it just sliced through. Actually these straights were really quick to cut, and because they were just straights, I found I didn't need the extra mechanical advantage of cutting from the inside. I hope my experience is of help to others

I'm going to try it tomorrow, ,but first I need to find out what is 300lbs 😂but I think to buy the strongest fishing cord... Thanks for the corrections and I think the most important part is a lubricant !apologies for my English. .

@@v.ivanov8001 Yes my modified approach works well. If you search for 300lbs line on Amazon, you will find a lot of options. But make sure you saw all of the corners with the wire fist and lubricate everything well. You can then cut the straights easily with the fishing line. I have now removed 4 windscreen with this approach and may get round to making a video on it sometime.

Another approach I have since used (which is a little quicker) is to use something like a Milwaukee C12MT multi tool. You can even get the dedicated windscreen cutting blades for these. The blades by Equaliser or Fein fit, you just need a chunky washer to hold them on. Alternatively you could weld a stanley blade onto a sawzall attachment like this: i.ibb.co/cQFf8pZ/tack-weld-standley-onto-sawzall-attachment.jpg But really the simple approach with the wire and fishing line is all you need

This looks like the easiest method and least likely to break the windshield. Those pull knives won't reach far enough on some cars and the cable saw is slow and risky. Thanks for sharing this Will. Five years later and it's still helping people out.

Nice work Will. I too have watched a lot of videos on the expensive cord and wire pull methods. The only thing that I would add that might make the pulling resistance less, would be to spray a liquid on the outside... water, soapy water, or maybe a cleaner spray like Simple Green. I do have other tools, (I help my Brother from time to time. He owns a Glass Shop) such as the reciprocating blade/knife, but I am always looking for a better, less expensive way/method. The goal is to not break it!!! Again, nice work. Thanks for sharing your creative thoughts, yoaseff.

I have to help replace a windshield today and never done it before so I was looking for a video on how to remove one. Thomas Richardson There have been some good suggestions in the comments, like putting dish soap between the edge of the glass and the frame of the car to reduce the friction.. Very nice job. I started thinking about using strong braided fishing line, searched on YT and came across your video. I have some experience cutting out glass professionally, many years ago. We used the sawz-all style tool, which was fast, but caused more damage than I like. I have a suggestion for your method that should make it much easier. Get a long-handled utility knife. I think mine is 16 inches. Cut the top and down the pillars using your method. Once those are cut out, gently push out on the windshield and cut along the bottom with the utility knife. Don't cut through all in one pass. With each cut, you'll feel the windshield coming away. After 3 or 4 cuts, you'll be all the way through. Just be careful not to push hard enough to break the glass. I can cut through the bottom this way in under a minute (usually about 30 seconds). Just a tip for others looking to yeet a windshield lol

We usually just cut the hood release cable, from a wrecked car ( cut one end of the cable to pull out the wire ) then use the wire to cutout the windshield; 2 people one inside one outside, hook vice grips to both ends after feeding it through. Then we make back and forth sawing movements; ( The biggest problem is being careful not to damage interior parts ) I made a sharp knife end for my oscillating power tool , now it's even easier - basically goes around underneath the windshield like cutting butter ; Still way cheaper than buying $500 tool. - Some windshields are thinner and take very little to break

Most likely when you hit the top corners . the reason it gets hard is there are plastic pins that sit in the hole in the top corners to set the glass when it installed by the factory you can see the hole in your last corner when it got harder to pull.

I would at least wrap a wash-cloth around the steering wheel, lest ye cut it in half lol. I just did mine using 100lb braided test and broke the line 4 times! I was moving slow too. I'll add to this process that the more flush and close to the glass you can keep the line, the better. I got the passenger pillar, top line then driver pillar done, then with help, we pulled from both the outside and inside at the same time to cut the bottom. I also used 1" wooden dowels cut at 10" long to wrap the wire around which works well because you have more to grip. I also recommend wiping a little oil along the outside perimeter (I used baby oil / mineral oil) and wore gloves. Aside from keeping the line close to the glass face, it's also important to try and keep the line in a "U" shape around the glue. Whenever it's an "L" it puts more inappropriate tension on the line and does not cut nearly as well as keeping the line in a U so that it stays as parallel as possible to the opposite line or outside line. Lastly, I did break the glass as it was already cracked before. If trying to salvage the glass I cannot say for sure whether this is the best method. I hope this helps those folks who try this method. At least it's cheap and doesn't need tools that you might only use once every 10 to 15 years. My total time after removing interior pillar plastics was around 2 hours.

A heat gun brings a high risk of thermalfracture ,the preferred method is to have the car in direct sunlight upon the windshield on a warm day for an hour or so. If that method isn't doable then next best is to have it inside a warm garrage for a couple hours.

You have persuaded me to have a go! I am not into fishing, so would have to buy some line. For 100lbs line it's actually more expensive than wire. Nevertheless I am happy to buy some line if it's the better option, but do you consider fishing line to have a definite advantage over wire? Or were you just using fishing line because that's all you had ? If you did not have fishing line, would you still choose to buy it in preference to wire?

I used fishing line because it is thinner so it doesn't require as much effort to pull through the urethane. It is more flexible so it will go around bends easier a d it will not damage the paint. When you wrap the line around the outside, you are constantly pulling new line through the window sealant. it works like a pulley, you pull a lot of line through while it slowly cuts through the seal. I'm not sure that you would have the same mechanical leverage if you fed the line from the inside out since you would be pulling the same few inches of line through the sealant.

will peters your video title begins with Windshield Removal. So yes, one would expect to see it being actually taken out. That would be the logical occurrence. You know, half the job. Which should have been a fairly easy achievement. You made a video about how to run a fishing line in between the glass and the frame. Then you cut to the windshield laying on the ground. You should have filmed the actual removal or used a different title.

@@WWFU I believe will peters is who made the video which leads me to believe that it's title and contents are his to choose. It's not all that hard to lift a windshield from it's place on a vehicle#(tip)# be careful of hitting it on things ,you lean it up then lift it out, it's to remain in a standing position only store it on blocks of wood or rubber .never lay it flat unless you have a windshield stand or it's joining it's placement on the vehicle. Will peters showed the hardest part of the task along with a different way to achieve the goal of being able to take it out. I'm pretty sure will peters isn't trying to pool the wool over anyone s eyes . But anywhoo....
