Maybe it only appears that way because the Gurhka band is a pipe band, unlike the Light Infantry/Rifles, which are a bugle band.

Do they carry ammo during parade so they could defend themselves in case of a terrorist attack? Or would they depend upon the police in that case?

They do, but only a clip or two. However they are all carrying Kukri. If you see a Gurkha coming at you with one, make what peace you have if you're a believer, as in seconds you'll be fscked. Everyone in the world fears this regiment. They have earned and maintain their reputation. Away from the field or parade ground they are the friendliest and most respectful people in our Army. Dad proudly served and ate with them (he ate the Gurkha way as respect to them).
