Great staff Ben, keep it up 🤙 On the next one, maybe you can mention what happens to the performance - behaviour of the sail, if the top - vario top or the extension, is slightly twisted.

Some things I've noted: - Add 2cm on boom length if boom is default SDM (like older Simmer Blackline) - Some mastbase is -2 cm - More wind -> more outhaul (on Blacktip 2019 as I have) - so, sometimes I rig +6 outhaul! I like the rope trick, should remember that.

Thank you Ben for this very informative rigging guide. So much more helpful than most of the sail brands rigging guides. Learnt some new tricks as well. The aspect of boom height impact on the outhaul is really important. As a tall rider with a higher boom i usually put +2cm on the recommended settings. Cheers!

The challenge for novice sailors like me is that the two most important settings- downhall and outhall are based on feel. As a beginner you don’t know what to feel for. For downhall you mentioned seeing the 2nd batten pull away from the mast. But how much? Similarly the outhall we feel for tension in the sail, again how much tension is right? I think you have to have a lot of sailing hours behind you to know when your sail feels right.

tas a rule of thumb I would say never have your sail not touch the boom on the water. This creates a stable sail and every sail is different, for downhaul if your sails does not have dots on the top to downhaul the loose leach to, see if they have a rigging video online to see how loose they are rigged. @@eolof7

Hello Ben, awesome idea with the guide.👍🏼🤙🏽 I would love a Goya Banzai or Fringe guide for the latest models. I ride the Goya Sails with a Severne Metal Wave boom and Goya extension and masts. When the sails are loading up with power they are extremely touching the boom. I‘m not sure I think the Goya booms are wider but the support guy from Goya told me there is no problem with riding it with a Severne boom. I tried several settings. It still touches if I crank up the outhall extremely :( Thanks for the help guys 🤙🏽

Hi Ben super video really interesting, it would have been perfect to show some detail of the downhall to show the pulley distance depending weather. I always wondering if the manufacturer spec for extension if we do pulley again pulley especially on cam sail is the max wind setting and from there more you release more you are on lighter wind? In term of brand i would love to have a video with loftsails designer Monty Spindler

Nice video ! Does the older Blacktips (2017-2019) need a little more downhaul tension ? Also, I think a good tip for the outhaul tension could be by checking how far the batten end (above the boom) goes behind the mast (?)

I'd stay up to 2017 could need more, from 2018 less. I have 2019 bt line and use sometime -2 downhaul, mastfoot dependant
@Tomasz_C
@Tomasz_C 7 ай бұрын
Seems like this sail has the clew at about 1/4 of the boom cut out (from the bottom) - so this is the place where you will have max outhaul tension for a set boom length. Moving the boom up or down from that position will only reduce the outhaul. The clew height position varies quite a bit between brands a models, it would be actually nice if the brands marked a position on the boom cutout at which the spec measurement was made. For checking the outhaul tension - do you ever push on close by the mast to see how much belly it gets when filled in instead of pushing around the boom clips? For me that's a better indicator for most brands while the key point remains the same, you don't want the profile to be too flat. One other thing worth mentioning is - if you change your downhaul during the session always double check the outhaul, since one effects the other quite a lot.

Good work, started windsurfing on Mountfield sails, yes Hayling, moved onto North sails, kept with them until they stopped making 5 batten sails, so now on simmer icon and Enduro with a couple of v max, I started shaking when you said 4 batten, but will let you off as it’s only on small ones, …….. I and many others like 5 battens, interestingly north/Duotone lost my business due to not listening to shop owners and customers, guess what the Duke is back…. To late I’m now Simmer style

Ben i have a few questions. Whij do you have the boom so low with very long cords on it? Do you trim the sail always with loose leach. Looks like you do not have a lot of trim possibilities with four batten sails? Do you change your mast position if you change your sail settings? How does downhaul works with 3 batten sails? Any tips? And if you go wave riding in light days. How are then your sail, mastfoot and board settings? Thanks fore already given tips.

I was surprised by that downhaul line pattern TBH. Does this go for Freeride/race sails as well? I mean obviously you don't want to cross the lines but I always go from outside to the inside and always from bottom to the front with the line which does not give crossed lines. But maybe you can downhaul a bit easier with the most tension being on the big pulley 🤔

When you push in the sail you are simulating the wind preasure and how the sail will work in reference to the boom. I have always done it and when i push and it has the correct separation from the boom, it right. 😊😊 It would have been nice if the camera got closer to the rig when you showed the rope bit.

Nice tips, Ben. Id' like to share I always set up the boom around armpit height, no matter conditions, and use 32-33'' harness lines (waist harness). I find these two settings, boom height and the size of harness lines, affect our sailing position (early planning, rig control, comfort, etc). Oldschool windsurfers tend to use short harness lines from what I see. What's your take on that?

Nice video, good tips, thanks! Allthough I don't agree with rigging upwind. Rigging with 30 knots of wind blowing towards me and 4 or 5 m² of sail in between sounds like a recipe for disaster :) To avoid wrinkling of the sail, I just put in the mast while unrolling (the mast pushes, so that the sail unrolls).

Personally I pass the last loop from the middle pulley of the sail so that the tension is smack in the middle of the sail. This only half crosses the final loop, so you can still downhaul it till both ends touch if you like. Also I tend to add a little bit more downhaul and see how the sail behaves in the water first, since you can always release some downhaul tension in the water if need be, but not the other way around. Just my 2c

Tensioning the 2nd batten, at 14'50'', I see diagonal creases from the batten tensioner towards the luff, already before you start to add more tension. These are typically a sign of too much batten-tension, right? I see the wrinkles getting worse as you add tension. In the vid I could not see the wrinkles perpendicular to the batten near the luff, typically associated with too little tension. Probably due to the light in the sail and the angle from the camera. Anyway, do you recognize the relation between the diagonal creases and too much batten tension? Already before the S-ing of the battens?

I got it perfect ONCE! (The sweet spot you were talking about), but since then, every time I try to re-trim it that way, the loose leech just doesn't seem to get quite as far down as this one perfect time. Even if I try to over-haul it, I suddenly can´t reach the amount I did this one time..

Hi Ben, like your rigging video i use Ezzy sails would like to hear a professionals thoughts on rigging them Thanks David
@cathulu15
@cathulu15 7 ай бұрын
Ezzy has videos on how to rig and tune, with the newer sails your looking for the batten above the boom to just clear the mast when rotating the sail iirc… not behind the mast or pulled away from the mast. That gives the medium setting. So high wind pulls away a bit, and low wind you overlap the mast a bit. I find a different mast selection will interfere with this guideline, and masts with different bend curves will be obviously out of whack and require more tension to properly rotate around the mast. Personally I like a softer mast and Ezzy sails do that by mixing masts sizes to have a bit longer extension typically… but not always.

When the wind loads the sail, the pocket will deepen and the battens will pull away from the mast. You can see this happen if you push on the sail near the harness lines. Incorrect downhaul and/or out haul tension will prevent the sail from attaining a proper shape.

color coordination : that's another reason for my custom board deck to be white... About wave sails, I would have a question : when rigged, the profile only reveals itself when the sail is under wind pressure. Ok, but shouldn't lighter riders use 'softer' mast so the sail get loaded with less wind pressure ?
