Despite being #2 they get overshadowed by the sheer volume of California production. I think Washington is a great place to make contact with the wine industry. It's very friendly and open here and more low key than in California. So, if moving is ever on your radar, you should definitely give Washington a think. Cheers!

Thank you! Those are great questions. Though there are tons of wineries in WA that make a Riesling, Riesling production in WA is dominated (in terms of volume) by CSM. I think one of the effects of that has been that many people don't think of WA Riesling as much as they do of CSM Riesling, since that's often their only exposure to a WA Riesling. This isn't meant to be a criticism of the Chateau -- they're incredibly supportive of other wineries and very generous with their research and more power to them for making a lot of good Riesling -- but I wonder if their strong association with grape has kept it from being associated more broadly with the state. Also, as Paul Gregutt pointed out in his Washington Wines and Wineries book, a lot consumers think that CSM is a California company (!), so that hasn't helped either. These are just some thoughts. The question really deserves a more disciplined and research-oriented response. As far as how much juice comes from out of state, I don't have hard data but my impression is, not much. I know several wineries that are selling their juice out of state but I don't know any that are buying (though I'm sure there out there). Keep in mind that for a bottle to say Washington State on it, 95% of the juice has to be from in-state. Anyway, I feel like I've rambled a bit, but I love questions like those. I hope it was helpful. Trust me, you won't be the only one who's surprised. Martedi is my favorite producer (my nick name for their winemaker is "Lord Sangio"). They're out of Woodinville, as is Adams Bench that makes a good (but pricey) Sangio from Red Willow Vineyard fruit. Michael Fiorentino (another Woodinville producer) is good, too. Probably easier to find would be Charles Smith's Guido, which, despite the name, is a good wine. It's only the 7th most planted grape, so there's not an ocean of it in Washington, but I think it's special. I'm either a visionary or a fool. Time will tell. Cheers!

There's a lot of them out there under a number of different labels, so it varies from wine to wine, but, generally speaking, I like them quite a bit. He's always been wise enough to hire very good winemakers. His former head winemaker, Andrew Latta, who was responsible for a number of stellar wines in the portfolio, has his own label, Latta Wines, which is very worth checking out and both of his current winemakers, Brennan Leighton and Katie Nelson, are very talented. Do you like the various Smith wines?
