Interesting. Where I have learned JKD folks say that Boxing Footwork is not only different from Wing Chun footwork but that they are incommensurate with each other as with the respective body mechanics....Would Wing Chun footwork lack the level of MOBILITY of boxing footwork ?.....That's what the late Leo Fong might have argued as a boxer.....I'd be interested in hearing any similarities between boxing & Wing Chun Footwork. In boxing didn't Bruce use the boxing footwork to step to the OUTSIDE in order to avoid being hit by the cross ? Something Wing Chun didn't have so much.

Jason, I loved the episode on Roberto Duran with the hand parrying/deflection. Thats why I mentioned the training footage of him with heavy bags, the constant flowing motion, brilliant rhythmic footwork and subtle head movement, and hands always up.

Very glad you are back. This video is good timing for me, as I have been trying to shift from a JKD footwork to Wing Chun inside application. Thanks for all the excellent training.

When I started to learn JKD one of the first things I did was check in with each and every practitioner to see who’s Touting what. Paul vunak was one that I spent nearly 24 hours studying. Watching tape after tape. Then I’d go to the students. Wong sheung Leung and Gary lam. Paul and SIFU J. Like that. He’s always been a sturdy go to.

Great video on combat philosophy of Wing Chun. It's cool that you mentioned Sifu Tony Massengil. I used took lessons from him, about 20 yrs ago. That's when he had the school in Newport News, VA area. Sadly I had left VA. I missed out on a chance to meet his senior teachers Sifu Hedenburger(R.I.P), and GM Ip Ching(R.I.P). Another life time. Keep put up the quality content. Someone has to keep this TCMA style honest, for the nxt generation.

Hey Sifu, great to see that you are still posting. Just started wing chun a few weeks ago, WSL lineage, and I am currently dealing with trying to remain mobile while also keeping my hips square on the opponent. It definitely puts a lot of weight on the back leg so we'll see where I find a good balance, but this topic is exactly what I've been thinking about.

Wing Chun and sensitivity to feel energy is great to learn for trapping range (I've done it for over twenty years), but you have to mix it with skills in boxing and kicking range (also ground range) in a street fight or you will get your ass kicked. Great video.

Wing-chun footwork being rooted has major benefits for self defense applications. Sure when you apply it in sparring on the outside the dynamics are different which allows your footwork to change to be more mobile. But the problem most have is they train traditionally, meaning single direct attacks and one-step range. This translates to their sparring, they are passive do not use baits or faints, do not throw combinations etc. Also they do not enter in at an angle or make sure their opponent is not facing. Regarding stepping backwards, yes you do step backwards but only in certain situations. Most often you want to let your opponent miss and lose their confidence until you find a way to enter. But if you allow your opponent to go foreward they will gain momentum which can be advantageous. So we'd rather shift and let the opponent push us backwards so we can emmediatly move in again than to step back ourselves. Stepping back yourself tends to put yourself out of range. That said good footwork is very important in Wing-Chun and it's something I try to work on as much as possible.

Question, Sifu Jason, when turning in say Biu Ju and you shift side to side, are you turning on heels or balls?
@JKDandWingChun
@JKDandWingChun 3 ай бұрын
Front of the heels. The weight should be centered, not leaning too far back or forward. Balance is key so we’re always telling our students to make sure to do the YJKYM “check” when doing drills so as to develop sound footwork fundamentals in practice. Since terrain and environment can vary, it’s super important to practice with that in mind and keep the “whole foot” (front of the heel) on the ground in the basic stance/position. Too much leaning, being too “light” on one’s feet, or too rooted are all examples of extremes that leave us vulnerable if forced to fight in a contradictory environment. Thanks for the great question.

Wing Chun footwork might be the worst footwork there is. when you demonstrate it you can just see how inefficient it is and you cant compare it to boxing footwork, there is a reason that Bruce Lee changed the footwork when he created Jeet Kune Do

He seems very knowledgeable and is obviously a gifted communicator with loads of passion. If I remember correctly, he has both a law enforcement and wrestling background too, so that gives him a unique application perspective of the Wing Chun structures, I’m sure.

@@JKDandWingChun Yes, I notice he emphasize in his Wing Chun not a lot of footwork. He just in close range presses on forward does this Chi Na grappling application.

Because something looks a little like something doesn't mean it is something else... There isn't one way to step or move in Wing Chun... You need to break this down by what you're doing with what footwork... Saying Wing Chun only moves one way or in one direction is simply not correct...no idea where that came from... You need to keep in mind that among a hundred other things there is a time in training the system and time in a fight when you are kicking or dealing with kicks with your lead leg or receiving other energy. During entry you may have a rear leg/foot loading and that means among other things you're storing energy. It definitely does NOT mean you're immobile or can't move... The plain vanilla Chum Kiu stepping can be done very lively and explode across a large area.. but that's not what it's for... it's for learning a mechanic and if you get lost chasing what it might have in common with boxing footwork (almost nothing in the CK stepping) then you may lose some of the most important elements of the second form... Stances are motion frozen in time for purposes of learning. And yes as was said, the surface (and types of shoes) matters too. Wing Chun generally prefers to enter with a small flank...that's what's created when you take the square on stance and step in with the flank, often the rear leg is loaded. The rear loaded leg stores energy to explode while the lead leg is free to deal with his leg, sticking, kicking or trapping. As we all know Wing Chun is mainly an inside art and as such most of the time it's facing, rooted and connected to the opponent, not dancing around... In Boxing you have a more bai jong position where in WC you often have both heels on the same line. It's seen clearly in the second form and Boxing doesn't do it.... Some Boxing also does a lot of hopping or bouncing and WC doesn't do that either. That doesn't mean you can't do it but some structure needs the WC horse... The system IMO spends more time in the horse than not. No you won't say I wish I didn't move so well, the idea is less movement and motion is more efficient.. Bruce was clear about that as well... Minimal wasted movement and maximum results... And yes you should be training how you fight.... With minor changes...like the form is not a fight. That's just basic sport science. That doesn't mean a boxer fights with his jump rope it means he uses the hopping and ankle strengthening from jumping rope in his footwork...he hops...
