Cole had a great question on Monday, here is a better explanation than I could give on the ice!

I am not at all involved with your team, but I find your videos really good. They help me understand the game and develop hockey sense, which is tough for me getting back into playing hockey after 25 years. Thanks for the effort. Please do more 😁

As a new adult player I love your videos. Beer league doesn't have much for coaching so it's nice to see detailed breakdowns of plays and positioning. "Cover this area and keep an eye on that D man" only goes so far.

Strong side and weak side. if youre LW cover the RD. but also keep an eye on the LD, block their shots and make the ice shrink for both of them.

@@janzkee yes. A lot of times I see wingers in the defensive zone too fixated on covering their own D man ... to the point where they are out in no man's land. Being able to shift laterally (i.e. move to the middle when your the weakside and move to the boards when your the strong side) is key to keeping in position. You don't need to be right on the D-man to cover him. Stay in the passing lane between you and him, and you're good. Combining all of this will allow you to cover much more ice in the D zone as a winger without being out of position.

Thanks for the informational video! My kid is playing wing a lot this year, and this video really helped him learn winger and what they have to do and positioning! This video was great.

Love your stuff. I agree with about 99%. ;) Seriously though all around excellent. I slightly disagree about heels to boards if it's a clean breakout. I want my wingers doing headchecks and if space stick and toes up ice and moving north. As they progress up the boards they can rotate to protect puck from pinching D. Always have my C low and low for that bump back option.

I love it Coach! Love the details ..using body parts names toes/heals and rotating up ice . All words that everyone understands! Love it. Johnny Gaudreau does a great job with shoulder checks on the breakout! I think shoulder checks for d picking up pucks on dumps is huge as well. One of the best things I told my son and his d partners without a doubt in the last few years. Question: what about for centers? They (I would think) need to do a lot of shoulder checking? Not sure...it’s probably the position I am the weakest on(playing and coaching). Thanks for another great piece !!

Nick Lamia thanks for the message, I completely agree that scanning/pre-scanning/shoulder checking is important for every player on the ice. I truly believe vision and processing that information is the prerequisite for hockey sense/hockey IQ
