I rode Winnatts Pass this week and full respect to anyone who's ridden this brutal climb. It's easily the hardest climb I've ever done. Kudos for doing this video 👍

Love it! Decades ago as when i was racing in the 'schoolboy' and later in the 'junior' class I used to go up and down Winnats Pass (and the Snake and Woodhead Passes) training. There was also a group called 'The Chain Gang' that used to set out from Hazel Grove on training runs. This was back in the days of Tommy Simpson and Jacques Anquetil (Eddy Merckx was up and conning). I used to ride for Glossop Velo and later Manchester Wheelers, I don't know if these clubs are still going. Good times!

I used to live out near there, climbed it a lot. Did it a couple of weeks ago, made me realise I am getting older. But still riding it......A pretty fab climb, and one of those which is hard enough for car drivers to empathise and treat you responsibly.

You conquered Winnat's in the wind we've had this week - I salute you. I prefer climbing too. I just get into a rhythm and into the zone - it's hypnotic. The best thing is, when you've got to the top of a climb you've achieved something, even if you've done it slower than previously. I go over to Winnat's from Macclesfield, there's climbing to get to the climb😍

I’ve only ever managed to ride up it once. There’s a bit about 2/3 of the way up where the wind just hits you and I come to a halt, and it’s so steep, you can’t get going again. The one time I managed to ride all the way up was with a tailwind! Perhaps I could do it if I had a 40 sprocket! You can usually smell the burning clutches and brakes from the cars. I have to say well done, that was a great effort. Chapeau! What about doing Snake Pass from Glossop?

Oooh - that point where you stand up always gets me. It’s weird, depending on fitness I’ve either sailed up there, or crawled to a halt and walked that bit. Well done, a cracking effort and big thumbs up to whoever was fit enough to film it.

Hi Katie, you asked for suggested climbs, can I suggest 2?: 1) Sychnant Pass going up from Dwygyfylchi toward Conwy; 2) in Llandudno, going up the Great Orme (was recently the final stage of the Tour of Britain) - we used to do this as kids, visiting my Aunty and Uncle on Pyllau Farm at the top. Cheers.

Me and my brother have just come back from a diy coast to coast trip I made up from Cleethorpes to Liverpool with a overnight stay in Sheffield. We hit a big climb out of Sheffield, managed OK but when we came to Winnats pass my god! such a hard climb, the first section to the shop feels like cycling through treacle, we stopped for a minute at the shop then tried to power up but we had no chance with bike packing bags on and had to walk up defeated which was difficult in itself. We have decided to come back and give this a go later this year after a bit of hill training and without the heavy loads, such a beautiful place! I have so much respect for you smashing up that climb! well done!

There are many hills in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One Wild Pl., Alpha Dr., Josephine St./Arlington Ave., and S. 18th St. are relatively easy. Flowers Ave./Kilbourne St./Tesla St., and Sycamore St. are tough, but probably not anything like Hardknott Pass. If your up for a steep climb with more traffic, give Negley Ave. a try.

Broke down on there in a Toyota Land Cruiser Amazon a few years ago, managed to sheer some splines on a drive axle (my partner had let her son drive it & he's not kind to cars - think he kerbed it at speed). @Katie Kookaburra you know there are steeper hills in Derbyshire? Good test of your pain threshhold would be the road to Strines from Ladybower, there's some 1 in 4s along there! I used to run a 42 & 54 double up front with a 13-18 six-speed cassette on 700c in the early '90s - in my easiest gear I could manage 100 yards or so of the 1 in 4 (that's 25% for people born after 1971) before falling over sideways 😅 ah, Powergrips, those were the days...

Nice one. Strangely I haven't done this yet and I've been near to Castleton a lot. You should do Pea Road Lane in Stocksbridge, holme moss in Holmfirth, Jackson Bridge in Hepworth. You've probably done some. Hardest climb I've done yet is shibden wall in Halifax. Not long but because of big cobbles you have to keep above a certain speed so you don't fall off.

A brutal climb. I used to grind up there using a 40 teeth small chainring, and a 28 sprocket at the back. But now those days are gone. Love this. Many moons ago I struggled up Winnats towards the end of The Polka Dot Challenge sportive. As a reasonable road racer, I foolishly used my standard bottom gear of 42 x 19, so my cadence may have been slightly less than optimal! Interestingly, I've since climbed it many times on a mountain bike, using much lower gears and much less effort, in much faster times. Next job is to return on my favourite bike, the Ribble CGR ti, and do it in comfort.

Rather you than me! I went up _with a motor on_ and it was bad enough. It took me 7m 2s from Speedwell Cavern, to the cattle grid at the top. I was doing about 2 MPH or 3 MPH for a lot of it. EDIT: I worked out my average speed was 5.2 MPH (8.37 KM/h) on that short 0.61 mile (935 Meters) section. It's an elevation of 140 Meters (that makes the average gradient on this section: 14.97%). If I had to guess, I'd estimate I was probably putting out about 100W... and that's being optimistic! I am at nowhere near the fitness levels of people that ride up this unassisted. Kudos to Katie Kookaburra and anyone else that dares to take this on, even if you end up getting off and walking!

If anyone wants to climb Winnats, do it solo, don't do it in a sportive. I have done it a few times, when it's solo, it's great as you can go at your own pace and stop if you need to. On a sportive it's just a chain of riders all stuck at one pace as you can't overtake and when someone who isn't good enough just stops, it causes chaos down the line, particularly with cars going up/down.

Great effort. Back in the day, my workmate had a fiesta that couldn't make it up there unless the passengers got out and walked. Ps, I'd love to see you take a shot at Shibden wall in Halifax (if you haven't already).

Rough going around the bend with the cobbles. Just about coped on a road bike with 23's on. Dying at the top!

1st time I rode Winnatts was when the Tour de France was there, brand new bike, hit the climb full on, had to stop 3 times to get my breath 😂. Done it since, paced.much better. Hell of a climb. The broken road round the other side is fun, too

I tried to tackle this one at the tail end of one of the storms earlier this year. By the second yellow grit box, the wind was far too strong and couldn't keep it steady. Had the shame of walking up and treated to some jeers from drivers. Have to head back again soon.

Great video! Your pedal speed was great. Honestly! You know how to just approach a hill and conquer it. Focus on the task. Not pain. Every pedal stroke is that much closer to the end. Any power to the pedals is power to.the wheel. You're so good at this. Me? I am the old tipper truck in the slow lane. I don't have a super fast bike. So.......hey I am out there going. Enough said. Health and happiness to.you Ms. Katie.

That's a brutal climb, especially with that wind! I could really identify with that voice in your head telling you to stop. After years of climbing hills I've come to realize it's more a mental test than a physical one. What do you weigh Katie?

Great effort. Never ridden Winnats. I've driven it many times and it looks brutal. Will have to bite the bullet sometime and have a go.

Best way to clip in on a really steep hill is turn around for a bit first and then do a u-turn - honestly I forget about that option sometimes!!!
