For those that don't fully remember, or are seeing this for the first time: The station was going to have a contest, with the prize being $50.00. Johnny misread the original memo, and announced the prize as $5000.00; an amount that was astronomical to a small radio station. Since they couldn't admit the error after Johnny had been broadcasting it all day, they decided to make the contest so hard that no one could figure it out, and then they could end it in a few weeks with no winner. Instead, it was almost immediately solved.

The fun thing is that the most outlandish stuff does happen. Not to compare but I once was playing on a radio trivia show and had dialed in just anticipating the next question would be one I could answer. (Busy lines, time delay etc). Then the host asked the question "How many steps go up the Washington monument?". He opens the line and I'm the first caller. I totally guess '896'. (This was way before Google or the internet.). I won the prize. I knew he was expecting that question to run for at least 10 or 15 minutes. Fun times. I won a lot of lunches on that show.

I worked in a radio station that decided to hold one of those treasure hunts. Also a 5000 prize. We sold the advertiser on the fact that it would take a minimum of two weeks of clues before anyone would figure out where the treasure piece was hidden. Our sales manager took it upon himself to hide the treasure as well as to write every single clue and lay them out in order. He didn't even show any of us so there was no chance we could cheat. He would literally walk in three times a day and hand the DJ the clue in a sealed envelope. Our morning drive guy works and he gets his clue and reads it off. I'm doing midday so I get my clue and I read it. The afternoon Drive Guy starts and I'm just hanging around because he's a friend of mine when he gives out his third clue. Keep in mind we're still on the first day of what is supposed to be a two-week guaranteed run. He gives out the clue in 10 minutes later someone shows up at the radio station with the treasure piece. And what's sad is we knew someone was about to find it when we read the third clue because any of us that lived around there was able to take those three Clues and come to the same conclusion. So our Advertiser had to Pony up $5,000 for a 3-day contest and we ended up running makeup commercials for him and doing one live remote just to even the score
@hankkingsley93002 жыл бұрын
We do that s*** with our cash can usually someone finds it in the middle of week two out of four weeks amazing how nuts people go for $1,000. No matter how difficult you make the clues there is always someone with the free time to find it. Don't these morons have jobs?

One of our local stations teamed up with a Kubota dealer to give away a tractor for finding a "treasure rock" or something... guy married to my wife's co-worker found it almost immediately at a small local lake. The producer was a radio manager a decade before and his writers were old DJs. Much in S1 came from his experiences. Radio people called into the producer giving ideas of real life crazy stuff as the show gained traction. Turkeys Away was inspired by a radio stunt that went very wrong...in Atlanta if I recall. Involved live turkeys being thrown off the back of a moving truck. What could go wrong. I was a teen in the 70s and the rock, top 40, stations all did this stuff...contests weekly....crazy remotes....G100 had a disk jockey swim with a live shark in a big aquarium....the shark was 4 inches long but with all the hype, 2800 people came to see.

@@Brees1986 I remember one in the 90's, in real life the clips were longer, though, but not more than a few seconds. I remember one used the drum fill at the end of the chorus of Born To Be Wild, just the drum fill, you don't hear anything else from the song, and then it goes onto the next one. @Pablo Van Cleef "To Anacreon in Heaven" was the tune. Key technically didn't write a song he wrote a poem "On the defence of Fort M'Henry" which was later put to that music. @carmine redd "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" bypassed the networks, being marketed directly to local stations, thereby bypassing network censorship and allowing a LOT more controversial topics to be dealt with. That said, the decision to market it that way made it less well known as it was dependent on having a local affiliate. Without that, some regions would never see it due to its lack of a national network. So it could never achieve the fame of many other shows, even though it deserved more recognition as groundbreaking television.
