In today's video, we will be talking about Wins Above Replacement in Baseball and how it is applied to any given player. WAR has become the most popular statistic used to measure the success of a player. WAR incorporates AVG, SLG, OBP and a ton of other statistics to measure a player.
I hope this video helps you out! Let me know if there's any other analytics you'd like me to tackle in the future!

Appreciated the analysis on WAR. I've been a baseball fan for over 60 years but I would like to have explanations even on basic statistics like batting average. While I've generally understood them my whole life I am sure that there are things that I'm not quite clear as to what goes into them. For example, does hit by a pitch go into a batting average? Dropped third strike? Sacrifices? All those little things I'm sure make every statistic a little more than what you primarily think about. Thanks.

Hey Alan, thank you for watching! In terms of batting average, the only thing that counts are basehits. A HBP, a BB and a sacrifice do not count as At Bats, therefore they do not effect batting average. However, they DO effect OBP because that takes plate appearances into account instead of at bats. So if you've come to the plate 10 times, let's say you've walked in 5 of those appearances and struck out the other 5. You'd be 0-5, with an average of .000. However, you'd have a .500 OBP because you still reached base in 50% of your plate appearances. Similarly, a dropped 3rd strike counts for both just like a strikeout would. So in our scenario of 10 plate appearances with 5 strikeouts and 5 walks, let's say one of them was a dropped 3rd strike and you reached 1st base. You'd still be 0-5 but your OBP would be .600 since you reached base in 60% of your plate appearances. We hope this helped! Thanks again for watching!!

I appreciate the explanation. However all this does for me is reaffirms that I don’t care about WAR. I also think that the evaluation of a player’s career and potential HOF worthiness being based on this “stat” is ludicrous. And this video solidifies that view. (This is not a criticism of the video, it’s a criticism of WAR).

So what would also be helpful for a video like this is also an idea of the range of the stat. What's a really good WAR? what's a really bad WAR? what's an average WAR? You mentioned Mike Trout, but you didnt mention his opposite; one of the worst players in MLB. that would be really helpful for when im watching baseball and they mention a stat.

RBI's, HR's, Hits should always be determined by how it impacted the game. An RBI, a HR and a Hit in the 9th inning while trailing 7 - 0 means nothing. Is there a stat that shows how an RBI, a HR and a Hit actually helped the team win the game?
@ron88303
@ron88303 8 күн бұрын
WAR involves too many hypotheticals and probabilities, plus can one really test the validity of the results? For all the gyrations employed to reduce players down to a single number, it's seems far easier to look at a few basic metrics, the eye test, and common sense.

You need to do a video on WAR of Shohei Ohtani vs Aaron Judge. People are saying judge has a higher war yet Ohtani, if he played on the Yankees, would be their BEST pitcher and their SECOND BEST hitter. I find it hard to believe a replacement level player can do that… hell, any other player in history.

Because Mookie Betts was an RF w the red sox, only cause of Jackie Bradley Jr's defense, does Mookie ONLY get compared against other RFs. That would inflate his WAR. He should be compared against the average OF. Right?

Does WAR take into account how much a player is being paid compared to their replacement??

Outfield in particular is tricky. Mookie could certainly play CF if need be and obviously 2B as well. Calculating how he equates to a player at each of those positions is nearly impossible

This is a great question, I've never thought about it but that would be interesting. I was also wondering about how the ballpark can play a role in WAR. Pitchers especially in Coors field or even parks like in Boston or Cincinnati where homers can be much easier than in other parks like in San Francisco or San Diego, like is it fair to give players the same credit playing in more difficult parks for their skill set? IDK
@MarinerMojoOfficial
@MarinerMojoOfficial Жыл бұрын
I dont believe it takes into account the cost but I do think (I could be wrong) it does take into account ballpark. If not, there should be ballpark adjusted stats that would be relative to that players home park
@JayTemple
@JayTemple Жыл бұрын
It's relatively simple to adjust WAR to account for salary. If a player has a WAR of, say, 3.9 and earns $2,600,000, then you could define WAR$ as 3.9/2.6 = 1.5.
@kylorenkardashian79

I think that across eras SSs like Jeter, Garciaparra, and Tejada get punished because they r getting compared against each other. Whereas someone like Alan Trammell has an inflated WAR because during his time most organizations except Baltimore, saw SS as a defensive first position. I don't think Trammell is better than those late 90s SSs.

@@MarinerMojoOfficial my main issue with it now is what truly defines the level of the "replacement player" because from what i am seeing the replacement player is not suppose to be as good as a platoon caliber player but yet, depending on the team, a player has to put up all star caliber numbers in hitting, baserunning, and fielding just to be 0.1 of a game above a replacement player? The only thing i see it measuring is how many good games can you play, in these three categories at all yimes, before the coaching staff deems you replaceable
@MarinerMojoOfficial
@MarinerMojoOfficial Жыл бұрын
Yeah its a tough one to pin down honestly. I believe they take the WAR of every player and divide it up somehow to find the "replacement" level player. Honestly, it's a very imperfect stat. Even BaseballReference and Fangraphs have different WAR calculations😅 When I look at a player, WAR is usually like the third or fourth thing I use when evaluating them

Numbers do cut through the bs, but I think this stat doesn’t seem to mean anything. It’s too broad. Each position has a specific set of skills necessary and the number doesn’t do much except give people something to talk about.

I completely agree honestly! I don't think WAR is the end all be all Stat, its certainly more of a Supplemental one!
@MarinerMojoOfficial
@MarinerMojoOfficial Жыл бұрын
Different places measure WAR differently. bWAR (Baseball Reference WAR) and fWAR (Fangraphs WAR) often differ and sometimes they differ alot. WAR has a lot of trouble valuing a player like Ty France for example. He's so good defensively at first base but they don't value first base defense as say, 2B defense. So an Average defensive player at 2B could rank higher than an excellent defensive player at 1B.
@TheBirdHouse

The more I look into WAR the more I’m convinced it is meaningless. How can you be the best at Wins Above Replacement and NEVER help your team win. A La Mike Trout. He is the poster child for this stat being dumb. Literally never had a season that has mattered but he is the greatest because of this stat nerds made up. Slash line + runs and how many errors do you make would be better data to use. A good player should make his team better. A player with high WAR doesn’t. It’s weighted subjectively and who knows what a “replacement” player is going to do. I’m really trying to see the value in WAR but I just don’t.
