Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolors Field Pocket Set Review

The Cotman series of watercolor from Winsor and Newton is considered as student-grade. I got one to test if it was any good for painting, and possibly recommend this for beginners or students learning watercolor. For 3 weeks, I made actual paintings, and made some comparisons with professional-grade pigments. Is this set any good?

Best review of this set so far. I bought this for the box itself, and replaced the paint with pro grade paint from tubes I already have. That was about 15 years back. The box is holding up great with its sturdy stainless steel hinge pins.

I think they changed the formula of the cotman bc I got an old tube of French ult. on eBay and it was BEAUTIFUL and so granulating

This is an excellent video on the student grade watercolors in the Winsor & Newton Cotman Field Pocket set. The design of the set is perfect for traveling and the pigments will be fine for a beginner. Personally, I would replace the pans with artist grade watercolors if using it for myself. Thank you for making such excellent points regarding the mixing of opaque colors vs transparent, and the difference between the student and artist grade transparent/opaque colors.

I'd probably get disappointed with the student grade quality, but it's what I can currently afford as a student. I've been using sakura, and the pigments are bright, but I'm slowly running out of colors so I thought it might be good to try new ones, especially this set because the kit looks smart and convenient to bring outside (I bring mine to school everytime). In any case, I'd probably compromise. I don't like wasting colors as well >

Keep in mind that there are professional/successful artists whom use Cotman watercolor exclusively.
