Love it when the swatching is overlaid with commentary about your opinions about each color - that makes it so much more interesting! I usually skip over long dot card swatching videos, but I'm glad I watched yours today (I watched it at 2x the speed). This was great!

I'm obsessed with watching other people swatching dot cards. Also I like when people introduce commentary. Recently I bought a Daniel Smith swatch card I'm so excited.

As to Cadmium-Free yellows, their hues might be similar to the real thing, but they are problematic, to say the least. The fact that they refuse to say what pigments are in these colors makes them suspicious to start with. They claim to be ASTM I, which on face value, is the same as real cadmium, but ASTM I encompasses both Woolscale 7 and 8 and is only referring to masstone. Real Cadmium Yellow is Woolscale 8-8-8. There are beautiful Yellows in the paintings of Monet that are as fresh and bright as the day he painted them. Monet is known to have used Cadmium Yellow (although at that time its common name was "Aurora Yellow" (Sun Yellow). Van Gogh on the other hand is known to have avoided the new Cadmium Yellow, and is known to have used Chrome Yellow instead. He wrote to his brother about his love for Chrome Yellow. As a result Vincent's golden yellow sunflowers have visibly darkened in color in the last century as the Chrome Yellow slowly goes brown. There will come a time when those beautiful Sunflower paintings will become quite brown. It is very sad, but there is nothing that anyone can do to arrest this degradation. If only Vincent had taken a liking to the new Aurora Yellow that was first introduced by Winsor & Newton, but quickly adopted by other manufacturers as reports of its excellent properties came in from early adopters like Monet. These newer Cadmium-Free colors are definitely not as lightfast as the real cadmiums. I estimate them to be somewhere around Woolscale 7-6/7-6. It means that while these colors look similar out of the tube, the real cadmiums will not fade, while the cadmium free alternatives will, especially in pale washes and mixtures. We usually do not use colors in masstone. I cannot imagine any circumstance in which I would buy the fake alternatives, nor would I ever recommend them to my students unless they have an allergy to cadmium, and in my 66 years, I have never seen anyone with a cadmium allergy, and anyway, that is only applicable if getting the paint on the skin or eating it, neither of which I would recommend for any paints. Even a color that most people would consider perfectly safe like Raw or Burnt Umber contains Manganese which has even greater potential for allergies than cadmium. Ultramarine is full of sulfides. Terre Vert contains Manganese. Cobalt colors contain cobalt. It is an unfortunate reality that very lightfast pigments contain all sorts of ingredients that should be handled with care and treated with respect. Cadmium is not alone in this regard. Amongst artist colors, only Titanium White and the older Cochineal-based Carmine are considered safe enough that they are used as food colorings. All other colors should be treated as potentially toxic, at least to a small degree and to be not eaten or put on the bare skin. Nor should you breath in any spray made from the color. When treating artist colors with these kinds of cautions the real cadmium colors are safe to use and there is no reason to use the fake alternatives. Besides, if someone wants to use alternatives there are excellent other yellow colors that do not contain cadmium, but are much more lightfast than these mysterious colors marketed to be alternatives. As you say, there is no reason to use them.

Got curious about the Transparent Orange so I checked a couple of sites. Kim Crick says DPP is Diketo Pyrollo Pyrrole and it was previously labeled as PO107, but the pigment code hasn't actually been assigned. I don't know how she finds out this stuff but I'm glad she does because otherwise I'd have no idea where to start. lol

I really like that you let us see the colors dry and give us a slow perusal so we can really get a feel for which ones we might want to buy, thank you.

Thanks! I don’t always like swatching videos, but you move along at a good pace. I do like WN a lot and have a rather small set of about 18. I may buy some more, but then there are other brands like Schmincke, (I just ordered some more Schmincke from Jackson’s that I haven’t received yet,) Holbein, Daniel Smith and others that I like as much or even more. I recently bought a set of Pinks & Violets from Van Gogh and love it! Then that leads me to want to explore Rembrandt. And I just got an artist grade 12 color set of Paul Rubens and a “Pacific Northwest” set of 5 from M.Graham bc I’ve heard so many raves about them (big con is that they don’t travel well…so I won’t be traveling with them.). Then there’s gouache…I won’t even go there with this comment. 🤭 P.S. I’m a cobalt blue/teal and Quin Magenta/Violet girl myself.

Thank you for your efforts; it has helped me confirm some of what I was expecting and take on board other valid points to narrow down a very large wish-list in a practical and more cost effective way. Very much looking forward to trying my new paints and seeing how they mix.

Great video. I don't have many but I do have Permanent Carmine and Aqua Green because of pigment nerding. The aqua green is an automotive pigment called Palomar Turquoise and I do know it's a phthalo. I have no additional info about the carmine. I remember reading on Handprint that Antwerp Blue is much less lightfast than the regular Prussian Blue.

Permanent Carmine looks a little pinker to me than the two previous. Thanks for this, I enjoyed seeing the range of colours

I was waiting to swatch my swatch card before I watched your video👏🏼 it's just so fun to watch what other artists think if the colors. And I remembered you when I swatched madder rose 😅 I underestimated the smell and got so close to the paper when I swatched to smell it and it hit me so hard 😅😅

Perylene green is a black pigment, officially, which is why it is listed as a pigment Bk and not a pigment G. That does make it versatile as the mass tone is so deep, but it's also a very overpowering color if you are a new painter! And I've heard that viridian is notoriously difficult to rewet, which is why, even though it is a traditional color to have on a palette, it has been replaced by phthalos. Personally, I want the ALL!! Lol. Thanks for sharing this dot card watching! You did a lot of research for this video!! It is appreciated!

Transparent Orange is made using A pyrrole pigment. DPP stands for Diketo Pyrrolopyrrol. W&N used to say the CI name is PO107 but then they dropped that. It's not very clear to me why.

Whoa I completely forgot that White Nights Naples yellow light is PY216! I love that color, it goes with their pastels, but it`s more yellow than Turner`s yellow. But, what I didn`t see until now is that they have Naples Orange with the same pigment, so the mix of the two would be something like Turner`s yellow)) Now I only hope that the stores didn`t cancel WN, or they have a stash. And while I`m off topic speaking of White Nights, I too don`t like the color of Perylene Violet (it`s more brownish), but it has some unexpected flocculating particles, does your do the same? I have it in a pan. I love this W&N chart.. maybe `cos I`ve never tried their professional range. That colour: Rose Dore.. probably wouldn`t be too hard to mix, but every time I see it swatched I am just mesmerized. Lovely blues, as well. Thank you!

This one is super helpful, now I know that my palette is missing the Naples Yellow Deep for the tanned skin tones. I wonder what color you'd use or mix for your own skintone :) I loved hearing the nature sounds in the background, sounds like you live by a river/waterfall :)

Perylene maroon, Burnt Sienna and Light red make 3 fabulous tones for tile rooftops making the roof look far more interesting than one flat colour. Perylene maroon is pr179, yhe same pigment being used to replace pr206 in older permanent alizarin crimson. I prefer the permanent alizarin crimson. It will be interesting to see the difference between pr179 and pr206 new and old colours. I wonder how winsor and bewton will treat pr179 to get more brightness from it?

Hello ! Thanks for your video, very useful. Transparent Orange : DPP means DiketoPyrroloPyrrole, means it is a hybrid pigment with qualities of organic and non-organic pigments. You have Daniel Smith Pyrrol Orange n°126 PO73 and Transparent Pyrrol Orange n°187 PO71 (more red than PO73) : both hybrid pigments.

Permanent Carmine is listed as Quinacridone Pyrrolidone, not sure how lightfast it is, the Art Pigment Database says that Handprint calls it fugitive IV, but quins are usually lightfast 🤷

I love long swatches with commentary, now that you mention that their burnt sienna is like the "transparant red oxide" in the range that make so much sense, its a beautiful color tho, i think the brown ochre is the "burnt sienna-ish" with PBr7, not as deep or orange as i like but hey its PBr7 what baffles me is their burnt umber why is it 3 pigment instead of just 1, it's like they mix all the earth color and get it dark enough and just called a day. if you want to know more about pigment i highly recommend kimcrick youtube and website, i learn a lot from her about pigment and paint like how you said that the magnesium brown made with PY119 looks like roman szmal aquarius brown is because winsor newton list the chemical as iron magnesium oxide which is PBr11, i belive schmincke has a "true" PY119 in spinel brown.

Hi! May I ask if this dot card is on watercolor paper? I have Schmincke’s volcano yellow and red. I think the W&N respective cadmium yellow and red here seem to rewet more easily and have stronger pigment load

Great video, is it just me or do these dots seem on the stingy side? I did add perylene maroon (from M Graham) to my palette recently because I got a sample card from Oto Kano's patreon and I just thought it was a pretty color. I haven't used it for much yet but I envision flowers in a darker forest scene or things like that. I just had plenty of bright reds but not darker muted ones and it seemed like it would fill a gap. Oh I did use it for some reddish colored rocks in an underwater scene, worked well there.

I Just got my winsor newton paint set, and cant tell what colour they are, my name on the mini pallets dont really have numbers to put them in order, the way you did it in this video still dosnt help is there any other way to know the order?thanks mal

Did you smell the Rose Madder Genuine NR9? The Winsor Newton pigment is said to carry the actual scent of roses.

I have asked Winsor and Newton why the composition and permanence tables and the dot card you are swatching now, say that granulation and staining are 'not applicable or blank. It's misleading at the moment suggesting cad free colours are all more easy to wash blot out / removable/less staining and are all not granulating looking at the dot card alone.

Omg how am I supposed to pick what to buy. I'm dirt poor but I love all of these.

why do you carry the one colour to the next? when you want to know, how a colour swatches, why don't you wash out your brush every single time??????
