He knew what would happen soon. He was an old soldier himself, he knew exactly what to say concerning this situation. He knew the brits were not about to give up to the Nazis no matter what. Also the Germans bombed England a lot, but they did not really have enough soldiers, cargo barges, and other ships to invade England with. He knew the US would be totally involved soon. He knew it was only a matter of time before the Germans got too cocky, blowing up cargo ships, then Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and there you go.

Also, the most important detail. The speeches that had been written for him excoriated the USA for not getting involved. He rejected all of that and instead selected that one phrase, executed with haunting tone. Rather than criticize the USA, he appealed to higher motivations through the use of deprecation ... not always a fan of Churchill but this is one of the great speeches given in history.

I say this from India (which was a part of the empire at the time) The British people exemplified the very best quality possible of a people in standing up to such monstrous tyranny against all odds. Alone. But the British kept keeping the chin up, firm and fighting on against all odds. Winston Churchill was the exemplary leader who has such strength of character to stand and fight when the odds were the bleakest and in spite of his own party had lost hope and wanted to negotiate for peace. Whatever Churchill felt about India I dont hold against him. he was a loyal subject and minister of British Empire and such was its policy. He is to be admired for his leadership and knowledge and courage and conviction. He saved western civilization. The brave British lads on land air and sea who fought against all odds and fought with tenacity and courage...I salute them all. Bless them. I am proud my ancestors fought as part of the British empire in its finest hour.

Churchill's key characteristic was that, everything he asked for the British people to do, from defending their island's skies, to practically going to the 4 corners of the world, in eager to fight and die for the country, he would have done it himself, like he always did. High-rank serviceman during WW1, soldier in many conflicts across the globe, always below the same flag. He may have had his flaws, but he was one hell of a tought guy. HE dared to face the Nazis, and convinced the House of Commons to do so. HE was a PM, a leader, and most importantly, a ray of hope.

Few men have ever done as much as Winston Churchill to be loved and despised with equally fervent passion. He is famous for standing up to one of the greatest monsters of modern history while he himself was another such monster. His policies objectively resulted in millions of Indians dying cruelly of starvation, his military blunders resulted in millions of Australians dying needlessly, and yet he was also one of the men who stood up to the Nazis and helped to defeat them. I will never fully reconcile how I feel about him.

The last comments were directed at Canada and the United States. The New World would rescue the Old. Which ultimately did happen.
