The historic Winston Cup Museum in downtown Winston Salem NC is closing down for good in December 2023. Museum owner Will Spencer also owns JKS Incorporated, where he has been doing promotional work for NASCAR and its race teams for 40 years. Over his career in racing Will accumulated a significant collection of NASCAR race cars, some of which carry legendary historic value. Among the cars headed for the auction block at MECUM are an authentic Dale Earnhardt raced Monte Carlo, Original 1970 Super Bird wing car, the prototype NASCAR LR series Pontiac Sunbird, and numerous cup series cars with race history. Will Spencer built this museum in 2005 as a tribute to the greatest era in stock car racing.

@@Stapleton42 What would it take to keep this Museum going? It's a true shame that all of this NASCAR History will be auctioned off, it needs to be under one roof for all to see. Can we find a way to sponsor this current location, or can we find a new home in Las Vegas, or at Petersen in California? Something MUST be done to keep this collection together as one! Please ask around, I'm here to help in any way!!!

@@grplrhashi oddly enough the fed restrictions on tobacco companies not being able to sponsor the series and cups switch to Nextel and then the awful chase.. What's the saddest thing is RJR ( WINSTON ) was the company and people who put Nascar on the map. They were so dedicated to Nascar and when the government got involved with no tobacco Co. being able to advertise on TV anymore RJR had to get out. Winston used to pass out cartons of cigarettes for free to anyone over 18. Boy those were the good old days of Earnhardt, Elliott, Jarrett and others. You would have the time of your life. I know because I've been to most South Eastern tracks. Although I would be remiss if I didn't mention the untimely death of RJR p.r. man along with 8 others in a boating accident while on a duck hunting trip. It was all downhill after that. Watching your video allowed me to reminisce the good old days once again. Sad ending to Nascar once again. It's not the sport I grew to love anymore. No ingenuity anymore, just cookie cutter cars all running around together. Not my cup of tea Nascar. Oh yeah I want to mention that I would spend at least $300.00 per race. Thanks for the great video and a very special thanks to Will for preserving such history and sharing his stories. I wish we could do something to help him save the museum. Your doing your best to help him thanks.

The infield. Cartons of cigs, bbqs blazing everywhere, ride your bike and wherever you stopped, you immediately became friends with the people around you. I remember many of these cars, that was when one of my local restaurants had a weekly pot and you had to buy a number early in the week or do without. Everyone watched the Nascar races and Bill Elliot and Dale Earnhardt were the top two drivers. I remember an ex-girlfriend had two beagles she named Elliot and Earnhardt. This brought me back to a much simpler time in my life when you could easily tell the difference between a ford, chevy, oldsmobile, buick, pontiac and a few dodge's here and there. Then the next gen cars came about, and along with Nascar's incompetent, condescending and greedy leadership, ruined it and chased off most of their diehard race fans, never to return!

I am so thrilled you took the time to produce this video. I am so happy you had such a casual, detailed, honest, and heartfelt, interview with such a true icon of our old Winston Cup NASCAR. It was so sad and wrenched my heart when a question was asked, if certain cars are going to auction, and the answer drew out such a gut wrenching "yes" from our friend. It hurt like Hell to be told the truth. Now we must help this young man understand how much we love him for his life's work of passion. I grew up over in Hanestown in the 60's and 70's and worked for Piedmont. I've got some stories I will share about Richard Childress in our neighborhood, and my small contribution to a NASCAR championship in the 80's. I'll try to take time and write them down in another comment later. And I am doing it honoring the Winston Cup Museum and the personal thanks for bringing back such wonderful memories, although the video is under such sad circumstances. It is a shame Winston-Salem and the powers that be are such low life individuals. Not a gut amongst any of those morons anymore.

How does someone get bullied into closing their own place? This is sad that this is happening. Wish i knew about this place sooner. Would love to see these cars in person

I’m curious why they wouldn’t incorporate some of these great old, historical racecars into the NASCAR Hall of Fame? I’m sure that race fans would love to see these wonderfully restored beauties on display again. It’s such a damn shame that they can’t strike a deal and put those museum pieces where they truly belong…

Well this was really interesting and at the same time very sad to watch. NASCAR seemed to start sliding after RJR left in 2003. Very sad to see this museum sold at auction--so many stories and pieces of history that will be lost when it is no longer together. Thanks for sharing!

*Sorry, this is so much longer than I was anticipating but I got on a little rant. It might help the algorithms though.* *I'm not familiar with this lawsuit except for a couple articles I've read recently.* I'm not familiar with the specifics in documentation for the Winston Cup Museum either but I've got a good friend that worked with a well known law firm that specialized in Corporate assets, commercial property and Trademark laws for many years and I picked some things up. The first thing I learned was. *It doesn't always matter if you're right or wrong. What matters is who you know and if you have more money than the other guy.* That way you can drown the little guys in millions of dollars of legal bills and extensions dragging a case out for years. My understanding is, when a company buys another company there is a very detailed itemized statement of everything that is included in the sale of the company including property tax receipts! Assets, property, equipment, Trademarks and patents are just afew itemizations included in the sale of a giant company. Even when I sold my company I had to do this audit. Down to counting the vehicles and staplers. Unless the Winston Cup Museum was included in the sale of RJ Reynolds Inc. as one of THEIR many property holdings around the world. The new owners doesn't have Chit to do or a say in this Winston Cup Museum. Which is not owned by RJ Reynolds Inc. I'm assuming RJ Reynolds allowed the museum to use the Winston Cup name as an homage to the Winston Cup racing Legacy all these years or the Museum paid a small licensing fee to them for the use of the name. If RJ Reynolds Inc. even owned the name Winston Cup Racing Series anymore. If the Museum was told to change the name then that might not work either because there might not even be a licensing of the now defunct Winston Cup Racing Series name. They can't claim the name unless they kept up with federal obligations and continually paid for owning the Trademark name with the USPTO every ten years. I'm not an attorney just a friend of one and I'd have to double check the laws on this. With all this said. How this lawsuit wasn't thrown out as being frivolous and baseless is just Big business throwing their Big pile of money and Big weight around to crush the little guy. Their attorneys have to earn their salaries after all. The best way to do this and to look busy is to file wasteful lawsuits on the corporations behalf. Including "possibly" buying off a Currupt Judge or two with campaign contributions or vacation perks. Our legal system is constantly allowing the small Business man to get bent over by our third world legal system we call the American Justice System. I'm interested in knowing how this guy got so F#@ked by this dirty legal system of ours. *Lady justice or "Justitia" is supposed to be blindfolded showing she's unbiased in the courtroom to all appearances of either rich or poor, black or white, Male or female. *Today she's just Stupid and Currupt.* *The scales of Lady Justice are weighed down on one side with a lot of money and political influence against the other side which is the American Taxpaying Citizens.* If they can illegally sc re w over a President Of The United States Of America what change do we Regular Americans have going forward. This is such a great collection and it's a shame and a scam that he's being forced to close it down. Rant over. Great video. Looking forward to watching the next one. I can't believe how freaken long this is. Again sorry.
