I was recently commissioned to do some portrait carvings, and had to venture out into the woods to find some good pieces of cottonwood bark for the project.

hey Lucas - some ideas : I spend lot of time in bush ( North BC ) with hunting and scouting or trapping and mostly carrying binocular - on peak of mountain I scout for big ( really big ) cottonwood trees or aspens with broken top crown and trunk diameter at least 3 feet. Later I will bring my small 4 inches chainsaw, pry bar, and big mallet. It is not easy remove big chunk of bark . I do initial side cuts, later length cut and prying slowly on all length that chunk I remove it. In this way I was able collect chunks 7 inches wide .... On rotten tree that bark has lot of cracks and holes and is not very dense. Some times even I used ladder - using climbing spurs is very risky - that bark is not holding weight of body. Last point I got a luck with huge trees close to water source and that bark is super dense . Also is possible find huge tree in valley where trees are protected from wind. Finely - I admire your art and attitudes for details

Thanks for all this info! I find that the bark from deadfall trees is right in the sweet spot. Easy to remove but still solid to carve.

Just peeled some cotton wood bark to try out some stuff on, actually I'm in winnipeg also. Winters near with this week's weather 🤦‍♂️

I always snoop around if theres woods nearby jobs im on. I found one of the greatest cottonwood trees and got "caught" inspecting it. Guy comes out (from across the creek) and tells me theyve tended to the tree for years... By the shape it was in i believed him.... Which also unfortunately ment it wasnt shedding any bark. Im pretty sure ive scouted every good cottonwood tree in central ohio!

Шикарная кора, у нас на Дальнем Востоке такой толстой не встречал, режу по коре тополя но она не такая толстая

Hi Lucas, I'm in the UK and was just wondering if you could shed some light on what cottonwood bark ACTUALLY is? Is it just bark and happens to be very thick and carve-able? And what species is the tree it comes from usually? Just trying to find a sort of UK counterpart. Thanks in advance!

Hello Rhodri! Cottonwood bark literally is as simple as it sounds. It’s the bark from a cottonwood tree. It grows very thick, up to 5-6 inches deep on larger pieces. It’s super soft to carve and doesn’t have much grain specificity so you can carve in any direction without splintering. People liken it to carving hardened clay. Cottonwoods belong to the poplar family, they are native to northern regions of North America, unfortunately to my knowledge there isn’t anything in the UK that is similar but I am certainly no expert in that. There could be something I’ve never heard of.
