In this video I headed out with my Nikon Z9 and 600mm lens to a large field that is protected as open space to try to find and photograph an amazing bird of prey, the Northern Harrier. This location proved to be very productive as I found a coyote and a northern harrier in the field as well as a flock of American Pipits. The setting became perfect when a snow squall blew in and I was able to capture some images and video of the harrier in the falling snow. I returned to the field the following evening to get some more footage of this bird and the second evening I was able to watch two harriers foraging in the field and get some closer up shots of the harrier as it flew closer to me. This is such an amazing bird to watch, and I hope you enjoy the footage I was able to capture, Thank you for watching!

Great video, the environment is pretty much identical to where I see the European Hen Harriers in my area of France.

Awesome Video! Congratulations! Love the Coyote video! The Harrier video was great too.. it always amazes me that people just go about their day when nature is happening nearby.. oblivious to what amazing things wildlife can be.. the houses nearby is that got me thinking all that.. lol. Thanks For Your Video.. Great Job! And Thanks Again for showing what Wildlife photography is Really Like!

Thank you for watching and for the comment! It really is amazing how much people miss by just driving by a habitat like this! There were so many cars driving by that probably never realized that such an awesome bird was flying by them.

Beautiful shots and video clips of the wildlife while the snow's falling. One thing I experienced is that I constantly needed to adjust my speaker volume between you whispering and the music you chose to include. I would suggest leveling out the max volume to a more manageable level so your viewers don't have to do that constantly.

Excellent video Todd, Harriers are incredible birds. I just spent a day with Northern Harriers and Short Eared Owls at a waterfront marsh in British Columbia. I was fortunate enough to finally get some great shots of a male Harrier (Grey Ghost). I have seen and photographed many females but this was my first male. Thanks for sharing your experience and Happy Holidays!!

Thank you for watching! That is awesome! I have been wanting to find some short eared owls to photograph but they aren't that common in my area as far as I can tell. I would really like to see a male northern harrier as well. They seem to stay further north of me rather than migrating this far south for the winter. Happy holidays to you as well!

These are some absolutely fantastic shots. Have you got any advice for recording birds of prey? How do you keep them in focus? any tips on shooting them would be amazing! Thanks
@ToddDeWaldPhotography
@ToddDeWaldPhotography 5 ай бұрын
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed. With a lot of wildlife, the best way to keep them in focus is to actually use manual focus. Autofocus tends to jump around a lot locking onto the background or foreground and actually makes it harder to keep the bird in focus. A good gimbal head or video head is also a must so you can swing your camera and follow the movement. If your camera has focus peaking, this can really help when using manual focus to ensure your keeping the animal in focus. If you have any other questions feel free to ask!

@@ToddDeWaldPhotography You're welcome! I very much did enjoy it. Thanks alot for the advice. I appreciate it. I'm looking at starting a youtube in the new year and whilst I am comfortable shooting the birds, I'm really not comfortable videoing them at all. I wouldn't have the first clue where to start with video. I'll watch some more of your content to get more of an idea but generally. I think Im just gonna have to give it a go and learn by doing! I wont hesitate to ask more questions though, thank you!

Wow! beautiful shots of the Harrier! I'm a birder in Florida. I just bought the Nikon Zf and will use a Nikon PF 500mm Prime lens for my birding. I'm new to photography, have been using a bridge camera (Nikon P-950) so now I really have a lot to learn. Your shots here are just gorgeous. I think I may learn a lot from you, so I subscribed. Thank you so much.
