Winter Camping and Finding a Plane Crash

Backpacking & Solo Winter Camping in search of a 1954 commercial airline crash near the summit of Mt Success in the White Mountains.
For this 3 day, 2 night camping trip, I headed up to a lesser traveled corner of New Hampshire's White Mountain National Forest for some snowshoeing, camp cooking, and bit of New England aviation history.
My goal for this adventure was to find the resting place of Northeast Airlines Flight 792, which crashed on approach to Berlin Municipal Airport during inclement weather on November 30th, 1954. It made contact in the dense trees near the summit of Mt Success at an elevation of 3,390 feet.
The 7 mile hike to get there would require a gross elevation gain of roughly 3,700 feet on potentially unbroken trail in deep snow. The final portion of the hike would be an unofficial bushwhack through dense trees and snow. For this reason, I chose to break up the approach up by setting up camp at roughly the halfway point along Gentian Pond and the nearby lean-to shelter with sweeping views of the Carter-Moriah mountain range. After camping for the night, I would head up to the top of Mt Success, the first peak of the Mahoosuc Range and the Appalachian Trail's gateway to Maine. After a few miles and a couple thousand feet of ascent with my snowshoes, I would leave the trail behind in search of the DC-3.

Camp at Gentian Pond Shelter
This is a beautiful two level wooden lean-to with one of the best views from inside that I've ever seen in a backpacking shelter. There is a bear bin out back, a composting privy, and easily obtainable water available by the nearby pond. There are several tent platforms behind the shelter as well. Fires not permitted.

Day 1 Gross Elevation Gain: 1,582’

Appalachian Trail Northbound
Bushwhack towards the DC-3 plane crash site
The ground was covered with snow when I was there, but in warmer months there should be a faint, but visible herd path going into the woods in the open area just before the summit of Mt Success.
Once you're back in the woods, look out for yellow blazes indicating the AT boundary. The DC-3 is coincidentally right along the boundary. In my case, the snow on the trees and darkness limited my ability to follow these, but they should be more obvious in the daytime without fresh snow conditions.

Wow man. I follow you on your adventures as I'm a hiker, climber and a mountaineer too, but also a licensed pilot. I also did aircraft maintenance, flight dispatch and worked for a major airline for 10 years. I left the aviation industry 15 years ago, but aviation is still in my blood. Seeing this mostly intact DC 3 gave me goose bumps. It's like walking into a grave. I never knew that there's something like that in the Whites. Awesome vid man!
@sintax77
@sintax77 3 жыл бұрын
It was quite a surreal experience. I can only imagine how much more so it would be for someone with actual experience in aviation. I apparently walked right past it in the dark. I decided to turn around and after a few feet I stopped to mess with my camera. I looked up and it was right there. 8 feet from my face, in the dead silence of the woods. One of the strangest feelings I've ever had.

My father travelled on that Northeast Airlines route in the late 1940's (Boston-Concord-Laconia-Berlin). A Northeast DC-3 is the first airplane I ever saw. In those days, you could walk your father to the plane, then go back 50 yards or so (behind a chainlink fence) and watch the takeoff. I still love those old DC-3's.

Wow ! You are either one of the most courageous individuals I have come across here on KZfaq, or one of the craziest ! I can't decide which one :) I must say I admire your obvious hiking skills and experience in the bush, but everything you did is what they taught me not to do in my college back packing and mountaineering course. Never hike in an unfamiliar area at night and never deviate from the trail unless it is in an area you are well familiar with - You did both ! Lord forbid you should take a fall and injure yourself up there in the mountains in the night ! Now that would be a horrible situation to be in - I am happy your night time visit and hike back to your base camp ended well for you. I really feel for the crash victims. What a horrible experience they went through.

I totally agree Mark! I could not image going BACK DOWN the mountain to base camp in the snow, pitch black alone in those temps and conditions! This is asking for trouble. No let me readdress begging for trouble. The wreckage of the plane didn't weird me out at all. But the journey in the dark alone and the trek back downward alone DID! Please people don't do this as a textbook way to accomplish! But, I did give the video a thumbs up for survival and great scenery however not for the correct form of adventure. Not judging! Just trying to prevent someone else's misfortune. Happy and safe trails!

Finally had time to finish this one up! I think this is one of favorite videos. It's always hard to film in the snow but you took it the extra mile and pushed to your goal and still made an exciting video!
