In this video I head back to the Norfolk Broads with Zed from Zed Outdoors for a bushcraft overnight hammock camp by Canadian canoe. We head off along the River Bure, loaded up with gear in search of a suitable quiet bit of woodland to set up camp, passing Mills, stunning historical stately homes, ancient bridges and lots of ducks and swans.
Arriving later than expected, we set up our hammocks and tarps and begin to gather and process enough firewood for our campfire. A well earned cuppa and then we get on with preparing dinner. Its the 25th January, Burns Night, and to commemorate the famous Scottish poet Rabbie Burns, a feast of Haggis, Neeps and Tatties is on the menu. The evening is spent catching up and enjoying the campfire beefier a restful night swinging in our hammocks below the starry Norfolk skies.
Morning brings sunshine and birdsong, coffee and scramble eggs on toast, before packing away and heading back down the river.
I’d like to say a huge thank you to Silverbirch canoes for lending us the gorgeous boat used in this video, a lightweight Duralight Broadland 15 - a perfect canoe tripping canoe that handles beautifully on the water. Silverbirch are a Norfolk based canoe company, all their boats (including a range of full whitewater spec canoes and Tortega sit on top kayaks) are designed, developed and manufactured in Norfolk, so it seemed fitting to use one of their canoes on this Norfolk trip.
I’d also like to thank my buddy Zed for coming up to share the weekend on the water and amongst the trees. Great paddle, great food, lots of laughs and great company! Zed has also filmed a video of the trip, so please do pop over to his channel and have a watch.

Hello Simon, Adrien Hicks all the way from Nova Scotia Canada, I work away from home on shift work and always find myself day dreaming about canoe tripping and being outdoors whenever I have time. Your videos take me out to the wilderness whenever I am not able to do so myself. My friends and I try to make multiple trips during the year, but some times time at home is short and I have a hard time getting out as much as I would like. I appreciate very much how informative you are, and take as much as I can out of your videos. Thanks for all that you do, Adrien.

hello and thank you for a great video you dont need a collapsable potato masher :) you can make one in literally 10 minutes using your saw, axe and knife. Cut the desired length of wood with the saw about 25cm, remove bark with knife. Cut a circle around the end piece about 10cm from either which side and about one third deep into the wood. Then use your axe to trim it around. You can use your knife to smooth out the handle part. Should leave you with a very basic but extremely durable bushcraft masher

Hi Simon. Lovely to see you out with Zed and also using your buck-saw. I thought you had given up on it, and yours was the reason I built mine. :) For future reference until you find a masher, as a kid we always used to use a standard dinner fork for mashing and adding the butter. Just a thought. Your friend Rach
@jamesellsworth9673
@jamesellsworth9673 4 жыл бұрын
Also a great suggestion. I sometimes use a fork as a masher. But, were I to canoe camp without fear of portages, I would include a real vegetable masher. One was part of my standard kit. They weigh little and fit in almost anywhere.

I had to Double Check if I was seeing what you were explaining about. I did a web search and here's what I found for everyone else who has any questions. Swede is a root vegetable, like turnips or parsnips, and it’s surprisingly versatile. In North America, it’s known as rutabaga, and in Scotland it’s sometimes referred to as turnip or ‘neeps’.

Soz, missed this one, I musth've subbed in Feb😳. Lovely mandolin intro that really fitted well with the footage ⛺️🤠👏👏👏❗️beautiful canoe for a 'plastic tub' 😍👍. Being Scottish, I wouldh've told you to avoid to avoid real haggis & make a chopped mushroom-based veg haggis anyway. You were very well informed about the Scots calling swede 'turnip' ..... I'm forever copping stick about it because my wife's English😳🤗. We regularly make swede & carrot mash, it never mashes real smooth- our tip would be get a bit of white or black pepper in there with the butter😋👍. I'll check out Zed, it's always good to catch someone else's footage of the same trip.
