Try hooking your minnows just under the skin on one side of the dorsel fin This keeps the minnow alive longer and it swims more natural. You will see better results from doing so!!

Ok get a dip net, girl! And the way you hook them is fine! Predator fish mostly like to swallow their prey head first which insures the hook is in the mouth. Tight lines and keep the fishing expeditions coming!

Not sure where you're at...I'm guessing in N.C. but I'm in the VA. Side of Gaston...just BARELY..and my plan was to do a little bank fishing here...(I had to come up here and install a well pump)...but its cold as a MONKEY up here...specially with the wind blowing..I've got some night crawlers...but by the time I was through working...I was ready to JUST SIT for a Lil bit...I might try tomorrow...but BEST OF LUCK to yall and may God bless and keep you!

Heidi Use a cork to hold the minnow off the bottom. When the water is cold the minnow will just lay still on the mud and not be seen. Good luck.

Toward the end there, that freezing cold just ready to go warm up...I felt that. Been there in a few situations myself that didn't even involve fishing or hunting. I enjoy you explaining what you are using and all of that detail. I haven't fished in 25 years, but a while back my daughter mentioned trying it. I'm at a loss of where to start again (I wasn't successful back then, but had fun) so I'm trying to research what to get and use so her and I can have some fun next spring fishing some ponds and lakes. Good stuff, and appreciate the honesty shown - that it doesn't always work out. Many times you go home with nothing to show for it other than being cold and wet and exhausted.

Your problem was fishing on the bottom. You need float and your minnow drop about 3 - 5 feet from the top of the water, see most fresh water fish hits above there head not bottom. A catfish is about the only botton feeder that feeds from the bottom unless you are fishing in very shollow water. Just trying the help. I am 60 and i have learned alot about fishing over the years. You should have took a little grill with you they have some heat I got a little 13-in or 14 inch BBQ grill that I take with me and throw some charcoal in it and then some wood and that keeps me nice and toasty instead of sitting out there in total opening freezing
