I don't disagree with any of your boot opinions, but I also think that a few seasons from now, the "outdated" ones will be back in style again. instead of keeping up with what's "in style" I'd rather have classic looks that always look good.

I prefer investment dressing & get so annoyed when a couple seasons later they're "outdated" due to some minor changes in detail. No sense in holding on to them. When the style comes back a few yrs later, there's always a change of detail to keep it dated anyway. errr .

I think, it’s not that they are dated but that it’s not her style preference. As an example Melissa does not like black boots. She likes light colours. The black boots would be fine with leggings or a different hem or different colour clothing. The ‘workman’ boots she didn’t consider feminine. That’s a style preference. Most chunky shoes would not be ‘feminine’ but some stylists like mixing masculine/structured and feminine pieces. Some people love the shine of patent/ polished shoes and the ‘interest’ that provides and you don’t get that with the knitted shoes.

I need a wide width, and agree a pointed toe looks great, but they are truly SO hard to find! It's very frustrating; many women start needing a wide width as they get older. It's as though shoe manufacturers, even high end ones, think women "of a certain age" should be relegated to the Frump Factory.

Completely agree! I own some wide Vivaia square toe ballets which are awesome however none of their boots are made in wide🥹 so unfortunately I’ll have to continue my hunt for the elusive wide toe boot with a pointed or square toe🤦🏻‍♀️

There a a few brands I use for that. One is Gabor and another is Tamaris. I have also recently found Anonymus Copenhagen, who have amazing leather in their shoes, they are not really in wide format, but for me they work, and they have size 43 and even 44 in some of their shoes…

Extended width calves very difficult to find as well! Would love an ultra flat (bad knees) tall knitted boot with pointed toes, (as Vivaia) but cannot seem to find this in the US market. Used to like COACH for extended widths in an ultra-flat boot, but not seeing it this season.

I can’t help but wonder how young women with a mortgage at a high percentage, also paying for childcare, high grocery prices, high gas prices, can afford to be buying all these clothes and boots! I’m glad that I’m retired and have my house paid for and money in the bank.

Very often, dated vs not dated seems to depend on whatever is on trend now. But chasing trends is not a good thing. At least in my opinion. (Like that dated boot was trendy a few years back; everyone wore it and saw no problem with it. And suddenly, it's dated!) On a side note, I keep seeing this phenomenon lately, where all fashion influencers HAVE to mention how eco-friendly and sustainable the new brand (they are talking about) is. I'm sorry, but it's pure virtue signaling. And honestly, how much eco-friendly can factories in China be? China doesn't care about that thing at all. What I found out is that if the brand is based in China, usually they lie about eco-friendliness to endear themselves to the westerners. And if it's a western brand with factories in China... they chose China for their factories (and not west) for a reason. (Most common are: cheap labor, less regulation for eco-friendliness, etc. So how much can we actually trust them about these claims???)

If we talk about brands there’s certain words regarding their brand that we have to mention but our opinions can’t be influenced and for me, I get sent hundreds of items a week and rarely show any of them as part of a brand partnership unless I truly wear them and use them on my clients.

Dear Melissa, it would be very nice if you make a video to style the boots that you say are dated but that most of us may have... In my case, last year I have invested in good leather boots and want/need to use them until they tear apart... Could you give us some tips to look stylish with this kind of shoes? I've been struggling a little with loving the chunky Chelsea boot vs wanting a more feminine look. My daughter tells me to just wear them and stop thinking about it, but she's not 67! In the end, my rule is I wear what I want and what I love but carefully consider the guidance I get from Melissa for which way tips the scale for my personal style.

I think it depends what your overall build and style is. I simply don't suit chunky footware, I look like a clown in them; but I've seen quite a few older women with edgier style looking great in them.

Ankle boot doesn't suit for a dress of that length as it cuts you off and make you appear shorter. Knee high boot would make you look taller as it covers up the skin.

If you are lacking in knee boots in all the colors you need, if you match tights to your boots, you can get by with wearing ankle boots with dresses. It isn't ideal, but it is hard to always have the exact boots you need.

I agree in principal but there's long boots that sometimes look dated and not suitable for the younger audience so to have a shorter option and to layer with a coat (as i've said) completes the outfit.

Yes, I am not a fan of a short boot of any kind with a dress either the possible exception of a nude or tan one that matches your skin color or a black sock boot with opaque black tights.

I found this video so interesting! Especially the visual of the stylish vs less stylish , it makes it easier to understand why some things work and others don't. Like sometimes an outfit just doesn't look right but I'm not sure why & it may just need a different shoe! Will experiment with this one, tho I do have some of the less stylish boots, hopefully can make them work with some outfits. Especially my Chelsea boots, I do love them.

Thank you so much for all the work you put into your channel! I've been following your advice, slowly buying white and neutral base tops of different thicknesses and formality, and finally, finally I no longer feel I have "nothing to wear"! This video was also super helpful as usual! I often feel my outfits are ruined as soon as I put shoes on. Finally donated some dated black boots I've been hanging on to but haven't been inspired to wear for 3+ years. But I'll be hanging onto my chelsea boots because I think those will come back eventually. Love the cream boots, will think about how those might fit into my wardrobe.

I love all of your videos!! With winter footwear it's more difficult for me to wear nice fashionable outerwear since i live in 'the great white north'. We often have minus 20 to 30c with blowing snow and ice so just staying upright is an effort. 🇨🇦 Last year i bought boots with retractable spikes on the bottom so i can walk my dog or walk a couple of blocks to the grocery store 🙈 , so sometimes outer footwear fashion is a secondary consideration😪. Thanks so much for this video it's very helpful and I'll be using this information for our 'good days' and any winter vacations. 🇨🇦 🤞 😃 Keep the videos coming please! Just got my first pair of Vivaia flats and absolutely love them! I’ve been eyeing a pair of their wedge ankle boots. I’ve got the viv boots with the chunky funky heel because I feel really wobbly in a kitten heel. Mine are in tan because cream is so impractical and these are only wipe clean not washable. I have the loafers in denim blue and love them and find the colour really versatile. So comfortable. I agree those shoes are expensive and feel sad they are made in china, although I understand why.

Love your videos, however I didn’t agree with some of the selections. Very pointy shoes are in style now but they also go out of style quickly. The round almond toe wasn’t mentioned but thanks to the CHANEL ballet flats NEVER go out of style. It was obvious the Vivia shoe has an affiliation but they will too go out of style and the boots material looked cheap. My option. I do follow you n think you have great content.

As I mentioned in the video, almond toe and ballet flats are very in fashion but because I’m short they don’t suit me personally. It’s ok not to agree as fashion is so personal and these are just our opinions right now, they might change next year and that’s ok too!

Hi Melissa I watch so many clothing videos but not too many shoes or boots videos. I definitely need to update . I do have a horrible time because standing doing hair so long has been hard on my feet. I think either I am mixed up or others are. I just bought a pair of DV black Chelsea boots for casual wear... I think you were saying in the two you were showing that those were neither chunky nor is it feminine. I got that the Chelsea boots you showed on the side were chunky but fashionable. I hope I am right . I do like mine. I think others think you meant they are outdated now. I definitely can be wrong thinking they are ok. I do love the one you showed. I'm loving your videos by the way. I just wanted to say that I struggle with finding a very wide fitting shoe or boot. Boots especially. All of my shoes have to be a wide fitting and I can't wear shoes that don't support my feet. I only choose shoe companies that have the wider fitting shoes and boots, such as Ara and Gabor and I think my choices are okay. I do try to keep on trend every season but I do have my absolute favourites which I love to wear.

I use Calla shoes quite a bit. Traditionally they're for bunion sufferers but that makes them extra wide, it might be worth you looking at them.

This video was very helpful and informative and if i were looking for new boots, i would consider these. Where i differ is when influencers declare perfectly nice boots "dated" and slap "x's" over them. Most of the dated boots are classic and while they may not look the best with skirts and dresses they would still look nice with jeans. I And yes, i know i dont have to watch these types of videos, but there are so many that they are hard to avoid.

Surely you realize the irony of pushing sustainable products while at the same time implying items they have in their wardrobe that are usable and still look good are "dated"? While I can see your point, I have some very expensive ‘dated’ boots which have been in fashion for years and now are apparently not. I can’t afford to buy new ones - which actually I believe will date quite quickly, so I have to wear them in the best way I can. Also I live in the countryside and white trainers in winter are a waste of time as they get dirty so quickly. I will just have to wear my boots the best way I can as I can’t be on trend when I can’t afford it.

I am confused. The sock boots look great but everything I have seen is you should not wear them with your leg showing between the top of boot and bottom of dress. Very helpful otherwise in helping me understand the chunky boot being out of style.

It depends if you like the look and what else you’re wearing with it - personally I love the look as it’s more youthful and sometimes that’s enough for me to wear it. X

Very interesting video. I would love to wear cute shoes in pretty colors, but I have worn narrow width shoes all my life(AAAA when I was young) . Sadly there are very few narrow shoes being made anymore, and if they are, they are matronly and in black or in cheap materials. Also, the flats are very flat and bad for my feet!

A trainer works well - a converse, adidas, veja etc. a small heeled boot would also look good and maybe for the evening a sling back shoe.

The ankle boots with midi and length dresses is really a question of taste, the ankle boot, even the sock boot, is just not flattering on many… and problem with Vivaia, I have both their boots and shoes, is that they are not leather, and after a wash or two, the water repellent is not really great. So for good weather they are fine, but when it’s cold, they are not great…

I don't know if you have a video JUST about the edge/length of the trouser, the type of fabric/color, and then the shoe styles. That flummoxes me to no end. I do realize it's tricky because all the above still varies dramatically by our height, weight, and legginess!

Not a fan of ankle boots with midi dresses where you see bare skin, I think it looks really odd. You just about get away with it as you have slim legs but any ladies with chunkier legs would just look dreadful.

@j: I make up my height in my legs and they are also slender but feel the way you do about ankle boots with midi dresses and speaking namely for myself, they still give the appearance of stumpy legs which they are not.

Sigh …shoes are a nightmare! Pointed toes are so bad for my feet , ballet flats would fall off and be impossible to walk in, heels a total nightmare, ankle boots with dresses don’t appeal …what to do🥲 I have found a derby style shoe apart from white sneakers. It’s approaching summer here so sling backs might work. Vivaia is expensive in Australia and I already know what the podiatrist thinks about them😂. Nevertheless as always very informative thank you!

I notice the long boots you showed had a lot of fluff stuck to them- I love the look of the vivaia boots but I have a white fluffy cat and can see these boots getting scruffy fast with fluff and hair. I think leather Chelsea boots are more classic and easier to maintain (are the vivaia fully water and weatherproof?) I also bought the chunky cream boots from marks after seeing them in your last video. Only thing to flag is size up - I’m a 6 but could only fit in the 8 due to being tight on the ankle and calf

I love your fun, instructional videos and have learned a lot from you. I am considering your recommendations while searching for new winter boots. I live in Alberta, Canada and need footwear that is warm and keeps me safe on slippery surfaces. I have good winter boots for outdoor activities but am searching for something that is warm, safe AND stylish for daily activities. I am seeing lots of chunky soled footwear and don't want to purchase something that will date too quickly. Any suggestions for women like me who have to focus on warmth and safety, yet want to be stylish?

I’d go for chunky sole with good grid to cover the practical, safety side but I’d make sure that the shaft of the boot was slim so it can easily slip under jeans/trousers and when paired with a cropped ankle grazer it had a sliming effect rather than adding bulk. 😘

Not a fan of the vivaia shoes. I need ancle support and I sincerely doubt the knit shoes will keep my foot dry in the winter months. I prefer a more timeless look like the beige shoes you showed towards the end 😊

Yes, once it snows, the knit boots are probably not the best to wear. Probably a better option for fall, early spring and if the pavement is dry. I find it a challenge when it is really snowy out.

good changes in most cases. However I struggle to understand the obsession with the vivaia shoes, they just look like thick socks - absolutely nothing stylish about them. They also break weirdly at the foot as one walks in them, they dont hold the foot together at all.

I struggle with flat feet and tendon dysfunction which means I have inserts in my shoes and need to wear something with a slight wedge /heel and lace up 😢 it’s so limiting. I love thé vivai shoes and boots and the leather loafers, flat trainers and pumps but I’d be unable to walk for pain. It’s so upsetting… would you consider mentioning some options for people who need orthotics please?

M . . . enjoying your videos. I live in the USA (Chicago). I purchased two (2) pair of loafers: tan and animal print. I have two questions: considering my skin tone (African American), is tan an appropriate color or more of a skin tone? Also, it's a bit chilly now and there are days I can still wear loafers with socks. What about trouser socks? Tan shoes with black socks is definitely a no no. HELP!

Yes you can wear tan or nude shoes (the latter just acts like a lighter toned shoe against your skin colour), I love a white shoe on a darker skin colour too and I’m sure tan would look equally as good. Generally speaking with a tan loafer I wouldn’t wear socks (unless you couldn’t see them) but I would wear black sock with black loafers. So if the weather meant you needed socks then I’d wear a trainer or boots instead x

How I love those sock boots- but not with with bunions like mine, it is such a struggle to find something that isn't agony after 5 minutes AND looks remotely sylish- and I did try Vivaia wide fit but without any luck :(

The kitten heels make the Vivaia boots looks feminine. The kitten heels would DIE a Tragic Death on the cobblestones in my town, myself along with them. Heels will always make your outfit look more feminine, but the flat boots are more practical on uneven surfaces.

I cannot have exposed skin above my ankles in my climate when wearing dresses. Skin will freeze. I currently wear a over the knee suede fitted boot (waterproof sprayed) with block heel for the icy conditions. Better suggestions?

What type of socks do you wear with sock style ankle boot? I find if I don't wear socks that peek out of the top of the boot they wiggle down past my heal through our the day.

It sounds to me like you're not wearing the right size socks if they're slipping down? If I was to wear a trainer sock then that sometimes happens but generally speaking a sock finishing at the ankle doesn't slip down and can't be seen with ankle boots.
