Such a valuable lesson for all gardeners. Nothing worse than putting manure on the garden that carries a broad leaf systemic herbicide. great video Scott

I'm in Louisville, Ky and I have continued to use Black Kow from Lowe's without issues. However, each time I buy some, before I spread it, I make a couple of holes in the bag and plant a couple of bean seeds (which sprout fairly quickly) and if they sprout and grow without the odd curling, etc. then I will go ahead and use it. Not sure but maybe the Black Kow from our local Lowes is sourced from somewhere where they don't use the herbicide. Hoping sweet Phoebe has a quick recovery!

I'm excited about my fall/winter peas this year. Grew a couple of giants in grow bags. They've been knocked back by heat and cold in the last six weeks, and now they're thriving. I eat a handful of peas every time I walk by. Yum!

It looks like the KZfaq gods have decided to let my posts stay posted again!!!!! Nice to see this video Scott. I havent had the aminopyralid herbicides problem, yet. That being said I am a budget gardener. After watching what you went through in the past, I doubled down on making my own compost, and recently leaf mold. Last year I had two smaller bins and came out with three 27 gallon totes of leaf mold. I got 16 tidy cat buckets of compost as well. In my tree lined suburb leaves are plentiful in the fall. I ended up with 43 big bags of leaves 3/4th of them I just picked up from the curb on garbage day. I also filled my two new 4'x5'x5' leaf mold bins to the top, and topped them off a few times as things settled before the snow came. I was thinking of adding either turnips or daikon's this year. I would do both, but room is a limiting factor. I am planing on expanding my garden, but even then room is an issue because I am going to put in trellises for tomatoes, green beans, and melons there. Still for me in 5b there is still time to do multiple garden layouts to try and fit more in.

@@ScottHead Thanks Scott. Its all a result of living on a fixed income, a little thinking, and a couple of youtube channels (mainly this one). I learned about composting here, getting the low hanging fruit (bags of leaves), and to glean info from multiple places even if they are not in your zone. I love the laid back tone of your channel. Going into gardening year four, and still a ton to learn.

You should also have a pot of good soil as a control. Low levels of of aminopyralid could like just stunt growth without visible signs. You would use the control to compare the size. It could also give poor germination and without a control, it would be hard to gauge.

So sorry to hear about Phoebe. We too have a corgi, and our Sophie is either a sloth or a roadrunner. When she gets "the zoomies," there's just no stopping her until SHE is ready to simmer down. I'm shocked she hasn't broken anything bouncing off the walls. Literally. Yesterday, I found her on my kitchen table eating my toddler's yogurt while he giggled away. Hoping Phoebe heals quickly and finds that spring in her step soon. It's hard to convince high energy dogs to rest.

I am sorry to hear about Phoebe. I grew up with corgis. My dad brought one to central Texas in 50’s from someone in a state up north. When we went to Love Field to pick Honey up everyone thought she was a fox because you could only see her face in the cage. They are Very loving dogs and yes a little on the hyper side. They do have problems with their back end because of their long body. You will need to start making sure she does not jump up on things that are to high because it will cause even more problems. I am 72 now and my last corgi died 8 years ago and I have very much wanted another one..

Thanks for that! I hope Phoebe will be all right and the vet bill won’t be too outrageous! I really think companies selling composted manure should test their products before selling them! I only add my own compost to the vegetable beds but we add a layer of sheep manure to the rest of the garden every spring, no trouble so far. My sheep manure comes out of Quebec, perhaps they aren’t using that stuff in that province! Klaus

Hugs to Phoebe - please keep us posted on how she's doing. These pyralid herbicides ought to be banned. There are actually laws governing their use and label requirements of products associated with them but nobody enforces them, and until the corporations get hit hard in the wallet nothing will change. It should not be the consumer's responsibility to test the product.

I heard about it over 2 years ago. I've not had it myself yet. My gardening days are coming to an end now so I won't worry too much for myself. But it's a really bad prognosis for the coming years and people should be made aware. I hope there is a test that the scientists create with a testing kit to save all this heartache.... Makes note.... I must buy a compost bin for the few years I have left to garden in my tiny plot.

Gardens can be ugly, so affirming. Glad I watch ALL your videos and today watched before I went to get manure before planting the Dixondale onions I just got, thanks to your recommendation. I got shortday but just learned about intermediate variety. Since I am in that zone is that a preference for me and folks in the future? How does onions being biennial affect this planting? Thanks Scott. Respect your avoiding sponsorships it's enough to recommend a company and give reasons.
@ScottHead
@ScottHead 2 жыл бұрын
Short day should do fine for you. Being biennial, you can avoid the long wait by planting the starts like I did. They will bulb up by summer because the supplier grew them from seed last year. If you do seeds, you have to plan on a longer effort. I'm not experienced with bulbing onions from seeds, just spring onion which are easy to start from seeds.

I used a board and had 100% germination, I was so proud of myself but after I took the board off they all died. I have a few here and there from the last few plantings but no enough to do anything with. I'll be germinating them in seed trays from now on. I planted some onion sets and onion seeds halloween weekend. I tried 14 of each. 4 of the onion sets have grown... and all 14 seeds have grown. It could be the fact I got the sets from tractor supply, but I was hoping they would end up working out and being bigger onions than the seeds. I'm in NC zone 7b/8a depending on who you ask. so I'm debating if I should just put some more sets in the ground this spring and hopefully get something from it. I know they wont be very big, but I might as well try. My garlic is going absolutely insane! planted 28 cloves... got 28 sprouts. but our weather here is so crazy. we never really got below freezing and stayed below freezing for more than a day until last week so they got pretty big. hopefully they are alright. This is my first real garden in NC so I'm still learning what can and can't be done here.
