Winter is Coming! Can I Finish the Log Cabin in Time? Roof, Stove and Outhouse

My Self Reliance

6 жыл бұрын

I knew it was coming soon, but not now! I have several things that need to be done before they're buried in snow and the ground freezes - finish the roof of the log cabin, build the outhouse, collect moss and clay for chinking, install the wood stove to heat the cabin, collect firewood....
Life at the cabin is getting more interesting with the approach of winter. The bear is still hanging around, presumably planning on hibernating on my land or nearby. The water in the creek is the highest it's been all year, with all of the rain and snow that fell this week. Cutting down dead trees and splitting firewood is quickly becoming a daily chore, especially with the wood stove almost ready to go.
It's also time to start stocking the larder with food for the winter in the cabin. Moose season came and went with no animals seen. Deer season opens next week and there are a few animals around, which would be a welcome addition to the storehouse.
Living offgrid is challenging, especially with zero electricity. Storing food this winter is going to be interesting since the homestead is not set up fully and there is no smokehouse, cache or root cellar.
The house, although a tiny home, is not feeling cramped so far. The loft is more than big enough to sleep two or more, which we did for the first time this week. Doug Outside and Joe Robinet stopped by for a night, and Doug stayed overnight while Joe had to go home.
We did have a chance to film a fireside chat about KZfaq and making a living at something you love. It's not suitable for this channel though, so you'll have to check into Patreon to see what it's all about.
In my self reflections, I talk about visualization and how it helps me focus each day and perform to the top of my game.
That's it for now. See you next week up at the cabin.

I've been accomplishing items that needed to be done on a regular basis. Partially because of your "call to action" against procrastination. Amazing really how I've let things pile up with the simplest excuses of why I can't do them at this time..thanks for the wake up call. Life should be used, not wasted, and you helped a lot in this regard. Stay safe pal, and keep at it. Mike

Hi I'm an ex Canadian (Toronto) now living in Perth Western Australia. My wife & I love watching you build the cabin. Reminds me of visits to my uncles cabin north of Belleville. We Enjoy listening to your reflections & how you visualize your work beforehand. Thirty odd years ago I learned about using visualizing to help perfect how you do things... after reading a book by Maxwell Maltz. (Amazingly I found that my brother had the same book in his collection after he died in a car accident in Toronto.... even though we had been living different lives in different countries.) Your Reflections on your life & your wizdom sharing is very much appreciated in our house. Cheers... Trevor & Rosemary.

Suggestion.......dont put the vertical porch logs in the dirt. The end grain will soak up water and rot quickly. Construct rock foundations and place the logs within the rocks. This will extend the life of the structure and add some architectural interest to the front of the cabin.

You are a true inspiration Shawn I am blown away with everything you have accomplished during this mission of building the cabin. Both the physical skills and mental growth that you have shared are truly appreciated by so many. My husband and I are very much on a similar journey towards self reliance, learning to live off the land, understanding the terrain and creating a life within that space. You inspire me everyday to take on new adventures, learn new skills and grow myself as a female bushcrafter. My husband and I cant wait to join your class when you host it sooner than later we hope.

I use visualization every day and have been for 35 years, I remember being a young man, and looking at a project , thinking, I wish I could visualize this whole system from the ground up. Visualization is a very important part of a task or job, there are less surprises along the way, and it is a very good practice! Thank you for your great videos! Visualization works great... when the universe isn't as absurd as it is. Seriously, I use visualization too, but the problem is that sometimes my brain is not adequate to cover all scenarios and because I'm an emotional person I sometimes get hysterical when things don't go to plan. My flaw is not being able to keep my cool in those conditions.

Do you ever think to yourself when you are building things like the cabin or other projects that these things will more than likely be here for a couple of hundred years. Like when you stumble into an old delapitated cabin or structure in the woods and you think, who built that? What did it look like when it was first built?

Dear friend thank you once again. The insight into watching this is brilliant and not because a twenty year long profession has made you an expert at it but rather your self reliance has and is what empowers you to do it professionally with out someone saying "no, nope no thats wrong".I imagine in your thought process of on top of this build is what content to show and how much self help and what should I speak of. Well my friend more then once now what you have said in your self reflection has been timely, very important and spoken of in a way as to not speak down or to impose you beliefs are the right ones. So when you have asked yourself should I add that comment or am I sure what I said is right? well the freer your thoughts are and the clearer your mind the more self reliance and well being you get. You are empowering my mind by virtue of empowering yours and im very much addicted to your show. So yes speak of it and yes at least I hear it and care for it. Cheers.

I am not sure if visualization of upcoming challenges is a learned behavior or an exercise of the mind. I don't know that if you don't have this ability, you can acquire it. I have always thought that it is instinct. I didn't think I could perfect it though. I do know, there is a big difference between someone who has the ability and someone who doesn't. I can visualize every step of an event and alter my actions accordingly. I do not play well with others for just that reason. If I can not have full control over events I get very frustrated, especially if I have other egos to distract me. I wonder if this isn't why you chose to do this build by yourself. The cabin is beautiful. Your ability to adapt to the weather is amazing. Most people would want to turn around and go home. You are like a dog with a bone, chewing away at this project no matter the events around you. I love watching your calm determination. You family much be very proud of you.

I find just watching the beautiful scenery that surrounds you, what you are doing with your life so uplifting. I am attracted more and more to life off grid....for when I retire. I thought it was very brave of you to talk about your shyness, and how you met your wife. And now she's moved into the cabin too!!! Best wishes to the James family, including Cali.

I grew up spending time in the woods with my Father, Uncles, and Grandfather. I moved Out West, at a young age, to a big city, to make and support a family. Watching your videos makes me long for my youth spent in the outdoors. I have six month old twin boys and I look forward to inspiring them like my elders inspire me. Keep doing what you do.

Sean James could never be on the 'History Channel'. He does good work and maintains a high level of decorum and integrity. Not to mention he doesn't deceive or mislead.

And the older I get the more I ask the Lord for wisdom and understanding, for help and protection, as Murphy's Law is forever nippng at our heels. There is an important Scripture bearing this principle in fact, "Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain" (Psalm 127:1). And believe me, I too have known the sting of life's failures when He wasn't at my right hand! Great video, really enjoyed it . . . and such a cool roof!

Canesser "1 Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. 2 It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep. - Psalm 127:1-2" Love that verse! Posting a different translation as well. :)

It is amazing how organic it becomes when you are connected to spirit and your creator. Visualization is the foundation of manifesting and creating your world and life. Many blessings to you and your beautiful cabin...You have done amazing work. Thanks for sharing and teaching others to learn how it is done.

Doors just get in the way during the process of going in and out and in and out with lumber, the wood stove; the gravel. The framing required reduces the open area of the doorway.

Josephine Flatt As far as the heat is concerned, once he had the roof on, even just the heat from his body will be caught by the roof and held to provide a pocket of warm air to sleep in. Nice going Shawn.

Visualisation is so important. My father taught me that when I was a young kid, and I have used that throughout my life. It allows you to really tackle big and small projects with the added confidence that you have already seen yourself being successful at whatever the task is calling for, and as the results reflect what you have already seen, there is a great sense of accomplishment in the finished project. Great wisdom.

These are my number one KZfaq videos to watch now. I love that place. On visualisation I naturally do this but in most cases probably over think things too much & turn them into a worry and anxiety, then 90% of what I worry about doesn't happen! I need to work on not over thinking too much! 👍
