I use one layer from 45°F to 30°F (about where you were for your ride), and it's Lavacore brand. It's cold water insulation for scuba, and per $ spent the best cold weather gear I've ever used. I put a padded shorts over the pants so friction doesn't destroy those. Their booties and gloves are wonderful quality and keep heat in so well too. You can get tops with hoods attached so your head stays warm as well and you wont need a buff/gator/neckwarmer. Since temps get down to -5°F around here, lavacore is a light enough base layer that adding on top of it doesn't take away anything from your ride performance. Still need to get a foot cover to help with wind chill though.
@AlanCallow
@AlanCallow 8 ай бұрын
Some good tips Amy. At coffee stop if wearing 2 base layers take them off and swap inner for outer (it will be less sweaty and therefore warmer); I ride Carbon bike in winter but just make sure I clean it after each ride only takes 5 mins
@andrewnorris5415
@andrewnorris5415 8 ай бұрын
Yeah the danger of damage to a carbon bike is using tyres close to the size limit. In very muddy conditions this can clog in the frame and grind it. Applies to ali bikes with carbon forks on big front tyres. Other than that, carbon is not affected by rust etc. Just clean it after every ride with a hose so the mud does to stick and eat the paint a little. Higher quality components are generally better sealed and better for winter.

Love these tips. Great things to do and they don’t take too much time either. I love started to complement people even if I don’t know them 😂 for example, if I see someone wearing a lovely coloured jacket that they really suit, I tell them. Every time I have done this the person is always so happy to hear it and I feel that even the tiniest of things like telling someone they look good or they did a great job, or have some great skills etc can make their day! Spread the kindness indeed ❤

The funniest way I've ever seen to keep your feet warm was applying a tube of deep heat on his feet. Within a few miles he was stood in his bare feet in the snow trying to cool his feet down !! Get some army surplus artic issue mittens and say good bye to cold hands no matter how cold it is
@sean6417
@sean6417 8 ай бұрын
the best solution for keeping my hands warm when the temperature drops to freezing or below, have been bar mitts (they won't win you any style points, but do a great job at keeping my hands warm). Another item I like to bring is an insulated water bottle, usually filled with an herbal tea. Beats drinking cold water on cold day imho.

Amy - you may want to get glasses with "photochromic" lens, which turn lighter or darker depending on the conditions. They're versatile & protect your eyes throughout the entire ride.

I thought these were a good idea too until I shot downhill at 30mph into thick tree canopy in summer and everything turned black! Literally couldn't see a thing. They do change but not terribly quickly so beware.
@malcontent_1
@malcontent_1 7 ай бұрын
@@benedictearlson9044 that doesn't mean they're _less_ advantageous than tinted glasses which do _not_ change with the environment. One can always take them off briefly, if needed. Photochromic lenses are still more useful in more conditions-no shades are "perfect" 100% of the time.

A tip I learned was to go slowly up the hills with the waterproof on. As that is when sweat develops. If the temp is due to change during the ride try to stop somewhere dry (bus stop, under tree etc) to add or remove a layer. Make sure have a really low granny gear!

Obvious but have you got tools, disposable gloves, pump, tube, chain link. No fun standing by the roadside in wet/cold conditions. Can you get that tyre off/on easily? If you do need to call someone try to get to a shop, cafe or bus shelter to get out of the wet/cold. A bag at home with winter stuff in it. Buff, arm warmers, overshoes, caps or beanie so they are to hand.

I rode from Warrington to Macclesfield forest once on my MTB, aim was to do the MTB loop with 3 shires head. But once got high up in the forest the snow stopped me! It got so deep I could not ride, so had to turn around. At that point my rear freewheel stopped working! Thankfully when I got down again and the temps rose, it started working again thankfully. One trick if get that is to zip tie it up so it becomes a fixie! Just have to go super easy on power or the ties or spoke make break! Not easy in the peak district! Also saw some poor dear sheltering from the cold in one spot.
