Winter Solo - Simon Gietl

During the winter of 2020, Simon completed the first solo winter traverse of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. In 2021 he climbed the Pilastro di Mezzo, Mariacher variant on Sass dla Crusc, and then, in 2022 the Rosengarten traverse. In 2023 he concluded with the Odle traverse. Always in winter. Always alone.

Ich habe für die Solos Verständnis, aber ich kenne auch die traurigen Momente, die ich bei Besuchen einer Mutter erlebte, die ihren einzigen Sohn bei einer Alleinbegehung verlor. Burkhard war ein extremer Kletterer, der nach R. Messner die 2. Alleinbegehung der Philipp-Flamm vI an der QIGM ( Punta Tissi) in der Civetta versuchte. Nach den Hauptschwierigkeiten und im oberen Teil der 900 Meter hohen Wand stürzte er in den Tod. Meine Besuche bei den Eltern und später bei der Mutter waren immer sehr belastend, denn die Frage warum er in die Wand einstieg, blieb unbeantwortet. Solos sind eine Sucht, aber Mandate nie vergessen, dass es auch der letzte Weg sein kann. Ein Weg ohne Rückkehr und die Frage ist: „Ist es das Abenteuer wert, Menschen, die dich lieben zu verletzen?“

I have no idea how someone holds the this cold rock with his bare fingers. If my fingers get cold I cant even break on my bike, let alone crimp on cold rock.

How/Why did he use the rope when he free soloed the route? It makes sense to have it for the abseiling, when no other option how to go down, but no idea why he tied himself on the way up

He is doing what’s called lead rope soloing not free soloing. You still place protection on the way up, the video just doesn’t show much for his protection placements

@@MikeCllns how does he collect the Gear ihe put in when uses the rope to Lead. Or is the Rope only there to abseil?

He builds and anchor before running out of rope with two to four pieces of gear, fixes the rope to the anchor, rappers down the fixed line cleaning the gear, than ascends the rope back up to the anchor and repeats.

@@solarwind907 He is not freesoloing though, which makes it much safer. Also dont think there was a crew with him, just a drone.
