Hi folks!
I am once again overnighting solo in early winter, and I took along my DD Hammocks XL (4.5m x 2.9m) Superlight tarp. The trail I followed winds its way around the picturesque Sahajärvi Lake, located within Teijo National Park, SW Finland. I crossed over the lake to the island on a rope-pulled ferry and overnighted on the picturesque Kalasuntti Island. I show how I set up my tarp using a ridgeline in an A-frame variant, which was very spacious.
The temperature dropped overnight and signs of approaching winter were evident from the 0.5 cm of ice on the small bay beside my campsite the following morning. Although I slept poorly, I ate well the first evening and also had a hearty breakfast of coffee and fried bacon served on flatbreads made of potato, known as peruna rieskanen.
The footage was filmed with a GoPro 11.
Come along with me on my adventures! You are most welcome! Check out my other videos, maybe give me a like, and consider subscribing.
All the best, Kevin. :-)

Love the sound of the stones bouncing across the ice. Another fantastic location. I'm very envious...

The whole route and Kalasuntti Island are really gorgeous, whatever the time of year. I just need to overcome my insomnia while out camping 🤷

Loved so much on this one Kevin! The flat breads, the rope ferry, your tarp skills, that still lake - such a great night away 🤩 Sorry to hear you were cold again - you’ll crack it this winter with the perseverance you clearly have!! 😎

Howdy. Welcome to the channel. I see you're a Insta360 camera fan as well. Good stuff! I've shot quite a few vids with a One X2 and was very satisfied with it. I started to use my GoPro 11 more this year and ended up selling the One X2. Think I might see about picking up a used X3. I Iike these cameras because I can just film and fix the shot I want in post. This gives a "purer" hiking/camping experience as I am not thinking about framing shots.

People slag me off about the emergency foils I use under my tent , but after 30 years of bad sleeps it totally changed my whole experience with bad nights out . Hope you are well brother

Feck 'em. You do what makes you comfortable. All else is just words. I got myself a roll of Reflectix-like foil just recently and am looking to try it out in my hammock. Hopefully next week.

@@snowcelt True words... Thanks. The hammock sound like the only feasible thing given the cold ground scenario you mentioned previously i would love to connect with you at some stage.. to do a zoom, you seem to have stuff in the west of Ireland similar to me.. Im starting to get the itch for a camping night. Today I discovered that someone has opened up a place i found last year. either animals of people opened up the ditch again, where someone had blocked it off. Its a cool little spot, all down hill.. I still think it will be a tent for me .. I have a hammock, but getting my feet out of the thing in the middle of the night is a real hassle. Hope you get a good one before the christmas.

Gorgeous spot Kevin, absolutely beautiful the next morning 😍 You made that ferry look easy 💪 That spot looked perfect for the tarp with such dry ground to set up on. Pity you didn't sleep so good as you had a great shelter there 😕

Thanks Niall! Any chance you be out again before crimbo? Saw a thumbnail the other day of some giant's statue and thought of you. I think you have hiked that route before.

@@snowcelt yeah, I did the same walk as Alyn back in January this year, the giant scared the life out of me that day appearing out of the cloud unexpectedly 🤣 I was out today, lovely beach walk and explored a little woodland, large derelict house and found a couple of great camping spots 😊

Thanks man 🙏 The tarp is an amazing bit of gear. I am still learning. I went out last weekend and attempted an overnighter. The plan was to make a plough-point configuration but the ground was so frozen, I couldnt get my pegs in. I tried using stones, snow, a different config, all failed. Finally my hands were numb to the wrists so I called it, packed up and went home.

@@snowcelt god that sounds hard core... brings me back to memories of camping with the mrs in a gale on a beach down the west.. It does seem as if the cold is rising up from the ground recently.. unbelievable how chill my feet were the other night. and at the top of maulin i put glove on last saturday and they made my fingers colder.. If you are not feeling it, its very hard to stay, the shelter is like the primary thing.

@johndoe Hi. About -5C, and I was very cold. I didnt put my underquilt on right and it was rated for -6C. Being cold has been an ongoing problem tbh. The last time I was on Kalasuntti I was worried that the lake ice would melt so much overnight I'd be stranded. 😮

A cold sleep in a hammock is no fun, I've done that! We don't have ice and snow here like that in northwestern Oregon, that'd be crazy lol

@@johndoe-lr9if Crazy without the right gear, for sure. Yet I have watched videos from the likes of Shug Emery (@shugemery) where he has slept in a hammock at below -20C and been warm. I don't know, seems like withcraft to me 🙂

What is the coldest you have hammock camped? (I did around zero recently in my Hennessey). Was worried that ferry wasn't going to work for you to get back with the ice haha. Sometimes the woods make me realize how tired I am, and then it's all about rest, despite hiking plans. Cheers

Hi. Recently hammock camped at -10C. Worked out well with a foam mat between the hammock's floor layers and thermal stacking a -12C underquilt with a -5C one. It's the warmest I've slept while doing winter camping.

@@snowcelt Indeed, with the right underquilt, pad, etc you can be so warm in a hammock winter camp. Warmer than sleeping in a tent, actually!
