@@lucyjane2481 I watched her videos and she doesn't actually know how to fish. Just watched her tie a improved clinch on a down eye baitholder. So Heidi can't tie a snell knot, can't run the boat, doesn't understand how water and tides affects how to find fish. It appears to be another channel that hires a model to crank the reel after a real fisherperson does the actual work, because someone decided it'd be a good marketing to combine pretty girls and fishing. I support fisherwomen 100% but authenticity is important. I recommend you check out Brook Crist, one of the only for real lit fisherwoman I've seen on youtube who can actually fish on her own. If you guys know of more, I'd be interested though.

Leif, I have only been watching your channel for a short time but I am enjoying it greatly. I might be able to give you some good advice. First, if you don't already do it, I would advise you to sharpen your lure hooks, single bait hooks and fly hooks often, particularly just before you start fishing and after you have got stuck on something. You will lose less fish. Also, set the hook somewhat more aggressively when you get a hit to ensure a good hook set. Try nymphs for winter fishing at your stream (like dragon fly or hellgramites, or whatever grows in your water). Also, try fishing night crawler "heads" on a light, strong thin leader (like Orvis Super Strong...it's has a smaller diameter but has higher test strength than other leader brands). The heads probably resemble a large nymph. This has worked great for me on trout and landlocks. Hope this helps. Wish I could be there. Keep up the good work! If you are interested in some more tips, let me know.

thanks for the fly fishing content, keep them lines tight! learning to roll cast would help a bit, will spook the fish less when you dont have to false casting 5 times above them. Also for technique i'd probably go for more of a nymphing setup, maybe an attractor nymph w/ a littler midge below it, with an indicator or euro nymph sighter on my leader. Those trout are real lazy when it gets cold and won't eat much of anything unless you present it properly right infront of them. Love your vids man

Id run a san juan, under the jon, with an alaska rig to bring them down, Most likely run a Zebra midge and a Scut though , Id definitely put a strike indicator 6-9' above that, and mend. Those small creeks are what i fish a lot in Wyoming generally have an under cut bank the fish hold in. That creek you could probably get a nice Nymphing stick and barely have to cast..
@sketcham9234
@sketcham9234 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, what he needs is weight and a strike indicator. In the winter time small flys, some worm flies or maybe an egg pattern
@barddzen
@barddzen 2 жыл бұрын
I would use an indicator with a heavy bead head (the nymph like you had was fine). You’ll have to play with the depth in the winter, the trout won’t move much. Maybe move up towards the fall a bit more and fish more downstream. Once you see the indicator drag, re-cast.
@518outdoors6
@518outdoors6 2 жыл бұрын
I’m was also a self taught fly fisherman. You can learn a lot from books and KZfaq about flies and reading water but a mentor is invaluable for casting and presentation. I was lucky to have a helpful guy stumble across me in a pool one day and straightened me right out. You also might want to try a yarn indicator; you might be missing some subtle takes. Anyway, thanks for a great video!

I’m new to fly fishing as well but one thing I’ve learned is to have good line control. As soon as the fly hits the water put the line in your index finger holding the rod. ALWAYS!!!! I’ve lost two or three fish because of that mistake. Line control also means to have little to no slack at all. Ive also lost fish like that. The better you get at line control the better your hook set will be atleast that’s my theory. Also aside from the hook set the line has more tension on it making it harder for the fish to spit the hook. Hope this helps! Also lol 😂 I like to throw subsurface flies like nymphs and streamers when I see fast moving water like in the ripple you were fishing.
@NWFishingSecrets
@NWFishingSecrets 2 жыл бұрын
Good point on the line control! I've definitely lost a couple due to excessive slack. And you're right - a faster sinking fly would have done better in that small waterfall! Thanks for watching!

Great video, as always! I'm sure someone's mentioned it by now, but using a strike indicator above one of those bead-head nymphs is an excellent set up, especially for winter. As long as you make sure the nymph is getting deep enough, you should see plenty of action in those streams. Also, it tends to feel a lot like bobber fishing-- which I know you love! Fish-on, sir. Agreed. You hit the nail squarely on the head. The attraction to these videos is the combination of fishing, with a dozen other powerful added ingredients that make these offerings truly unique, and in a very powerful and life-positive way. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find more than half the subscribers are truly loyal for all these reasons. Add to everything else a genuine love of life, nature and a thousand thousand other things, so easily and effortlessly and naturally portrayed and presented. And I'm writing all this in response to your comment, instead of directly to the "Fish on, baby" man himself, because I don't want to embarrass him!!!

I've been fly fishing casually for a few years now. The best tip I can give you is research the bugs in the area and by the season and get flies that mimic them. You can have the best cast and not catch anything if you don't toss the right fly. Learn the difference between nymphs and dries to start with. After that, it's just practice and experience. I do a lot of my fishing on the east side of the mountains (Yakima area) and have found stoneflies, grasshoppers, and elk hair caddis to be great in summer/fall, and green or red nymphs in winter and early spring. Thanks for another great vid!

Thanks dude for the escape you give me. I'm an avid flyfisher... It Takes time! You inspired me with the venison stew.. I cooked up some ground elk, portabella shrooms, carrots, onions and broccoli w Mae ploy sauce and s&p. Awesome!
