18 years ago, I had a 200 head cow/calf production herd and 5 top quality registered Angus bulls, many of my cows were black baddies, like the second one you gave the apple to, I had about 8% Texas Longhorn genetics in my production cattle for hardiness and lower calf birth weight, lol it's sad a longhorn can survive on pine straw and cactus. The polled hereford and angus genetics completely covered and kept the longhorn from showing up in my cables, never had apples to feed, but had a 2 ton gravity flow wagon and the cows always knew it had treats abroad, might out date bread, candy or cottonseed, I had one rule I won't own any cattle that I can't hand feed and pet, the crazy ones got the market trip.

Hello there, dear brother! I manage a small dairy farm in Northern India, and with winter approaching, I'm concerned about ensuring the well-being of our cows in the snowy weather. Could you provide advice on protecting them from the cold? Additionally, I'm curious about the optimal feeding pattern. What ingredients are best for maintaining the cows' health and boosting milk production? I'm particularly interested in learning about the composition of your silage. Appreciate your insights
@gwenyngruffydd
@gwenyngruffydd 5 ай бұрын
Hi, I’m not a dairy farmer and the feed my cows get is nowhere near the quality dairy cows get. I don’t test the silage. They get the grass that I have in the field as it is. Winter wise a good building to shelter them in is the best thing to do.

Hi, It doesn’t need to be to big. There is an official code for Square Metre per cow. I’m not sure what that is.
@ricardoaugusto9925
@ricardoaugusto9925 2 жыл бұрын
if you don t have enough space it could be 6 square meters per animal, but they would need an outdoor exercise area as well. The good thing about small barn is less bedding but more management to keep it clean. if you decide for 10, 12, 16 square meters per animal or more there will more space but the amount of bedding would be higher. You could make a small shed with 6 square meters per animal plus a small open area to put water and to feed them when it is not raining, that way some of the manure will be deposited outside of the bedding. Maybe a 6 x 6 meter shed would be enough.

just wondering why they cannot spend more time on pasture. Are you worried about them messing up the pastures because of all the mud? Is it tough to bring food to them because of all the snow or mud or are they just not acclimated to the weather where you are? Great video
@gwenyngruffydd
@gwenyngruffydd 4 жыл бұрын
Jason Detzel hi, the cows would do just fine outside unless we get a ridiculous amount of snow. The main reason to bring them in is to save the pasture. We want the grass to grow quick in spring. If the cows were left on the fields all winter there would be no grass in spring just mud. We cut that grass for winter feed too so would be disastrous. In some cases you can winter cows outdoors on good dry land but you need a lot of land so that the cattle are not poaching the same area. The sheep on the other hand will spend 11 months of the year outdoors. We only bring them in for lambing. Feeding them in the shed is really easy. We keep their feed by the shed and carry it in with the tractor. Il do another video showing this bit 😊. Thanks for the comment and I’m really glad you liked the video. 😊

How and how often do you scrape away muck from where they stand when they eat? Or du you just mix bedding into lt?
@gwenyngruffydd
@gwenyngruffydd 3 жыл бұрын
Normally clean the front out about 3 times a winter and totally empty the shed half way through the winter. I bed all the shed to stop it turning into slurry where they stand and eat. If I didn’t do that I’d probably have to clean the front out every week at least.

A neighbouring farm has put the cows inside for the winter but they never clean them out, it's absolutely awful living conditions, it's just slurry everywhere, they can venture outside onto concrete if they wish but that is covered in slurry too, the cows have no bedding what so ever, this year they are cows and calves in the barn, surely they need regular clean bedding?
@gwenyngruffydd
@gwenyngruffydd 2 жыл бұрын
Yes she’d should be bedded down regular or scraped out every day. No good keeping the cows filthy.
