Winterizing your sprinkler system

Each to their own. My 10 gallon works great! No need to rent a commercial compressor for 5 zones 50’ each. I fill 100% at 60-65psi, do zone 1. Fill 100%, do zone 2, etc. there have been years I didn’t totally blow it out and was fine. Just the house end. Due to how fast we had a freeze. I don’t recommend that though. Your Biggest concern is the main copper out if the house is the weak spot. And anti siphon valve cracking. I used to pay someone to blow them out until a lady sprinkler chick did it wrong leaving me with split copper. That black tubing underground is very robust. Most of castle rock doesn’t freeze long enough before the suns back out to every crack it. It’s made to expand. The pvc connectors will crack though. I don’t know why Colorado doesn’t use drains. Where I come from each zone has a drain. Very little blowing needed. Great video reminder though! Thanks!

What size air tank will work?

It varies depending on your system. The compressor size will be determined by the size of the sprinkler system being winterized. In other words, the larger the pipes and the more sprinkler heads, the more air you will need. More volume not more pressure. As a general rule, when blowing the water out of the lines all sprinkler heads will need to pop up and stay up, even after the water has been blown out. With drip systems you can use a lower volume of air but it will take longer because the water is being blown out slower.

It’s not a matter of what size the tank is, rather the CFM. A small wheelbarrow compressor with a 10 gallon tank might blow out a system more effectively than an 80 gallon stationary compressor if it has more CFM
