When you demolish something you have to dispose of the waste. Think of all the materials used and manufactured, energy required for original construction, costs, etc. I see why they have pollution problems.

Housing should not receive so much financial leverage. THAT is the problem. If builders had to put up cash and get normal loans for their projects, no out of control projects would happen, or very few. Real estate developers get INSANE leverage for their projects, then just declare bankruptcy and start a new company debt free. This is how it works.

It happened as developers in China , take 40% down-payment from the buyers , even before one brick is laid and money is transferred from escrow account to other projects. Thanks to rera, home buyers are much safe in India. Payments are released as developer progress and money is deposited in escrow account, which is used for that project only.

Instead of tearing them down, China can invite people from all over the world, just as USA did with the visa lottery, and give them jobs and accommodations so they work and pay taxes for the country.

What's needed is a follow-up story featuring an business/real estate expert from academia to better put it in perspective and give an expert opinion. The real question shouldn’t be where is the money going to come from but where did all the money go. Ten years of paying toward a home and it isn’t finished? I mean it couldn’t have all gone to luxury homes in Canada, the UK, Australia and Switzerland could it?
