Children are not startups. But in the rush to teach kids coding at an early age, are we treating them like one? Coding won't go away anytime soon, but childhood will. Let's make kids explore before making them excel.

Same condition of mine, even my mother didn't let me go anywhere, I have rarely watched TV and played games in my childhood but I don't blame her coz a lot of my friends became smokers and drinkers, and I having a good concentration and focus on my career made a good Govt job in the MoD at the age of 21, although I lack some social values but I can improve them. Thank your mother first, at least for giving you a life.

@@thelonewolfadventuretravel1655 My father wanted me to become a software engineer. I turned out to be a mechanical engineer 😃. Wanting and forcing children is entirely different 🤘. Wanting is never deciding to what they become. I wish they become, coz the world 🌎 needs them! Well, if they want to become an archaeologist, or a philanthropist for that matter, It's entirely their choice. FYI: The next generation is smart enough to make healthy choices... whether wished or forced by us , they're not gonna become what we wanted them to be, unless they too have something in common with our conscience. ☺

When I was in middle school (1990s) our computer / tech class was called Keyboard Literacy. It was basically a typing class using computers instead of typewriters. I recalled having one of those ol' school 1970s computers where you needed to use codes to print or save stuff in real floppy disks. Thank God Bill Gates Microsoft systems changed that and made things 100,000,000 times easier. Florida being a retirement Republican state has always been 10 to 20 years behind of everyone else, definitely 30 years behind of Democratic states like New York and other Northern states.

@aena mustafa As someone who did a bootcamp, and is finishing comp uni, I would say depending on what you want to do, for example, the bootcamp that I did was a full-stack developer in web development, I like to think that if you want to be a mason or is undecided a bootcamp is enough if you want to be an engineer or architect probably uni is required, besides that comp sci is a huge area, much like medicine, just without the years of specialization during uni, so during the course is best even if is just a few months to try the most areas that you can, and see what you like because if you like network maybe you don't like AI, or you like AI but hate hardware so instead of trying to learn this during jobs is best you have some idea during uni. What I don't know if depending on the area is required a Masters's degree to found a job? XD

As a mechanical engineer, I learned coding in a matter of 4 months. Ended up in a big Tech company. It took me 21 years of knowledge about Physics, Chemistry, Geography, PolScience, Psychology, History, Maths and so many others to make me capable enough to understand something like coding in mere 4 months. Teaching coding at an early stage will close that window of intelligence. Anyone can learn coding, but not anyone can do a cartwheel 🙂, don't take away their childhood. We miss ours .

I am a coder myself. In my 10 years of coding career I have realised knowledge mathematics , logical analysis and all knowledge which we gained through school and college is very much needed to code. It is not just about learning to code. It is about understanding the requirements, analysing requirements and ++ knowledge of mathematics which makes a good coder. Let kids be kids, let them gain knowledge at their own pace. Let them sing , dance , play instrument, or paint. Just let them enjoy their childhood.

When i was a school student, our school would give us one hour of social activity work at least 2 times a week, like cleaning school compond or our class, gardening, plantation drive, go on class trips for social survey, etc. And at least once a year, in the winter, we would go for school picnic ( we were also taught not to litter and clean the area before leaving) and bond with our teachers. I guess, thats how we learned the values of cleanliness, love and value for nature, discipline, obediance, etc. I miss those days.. no wonder it was so sentimental for the final year students during farewell days...

Thank you WION for speaking on this. People are getting madly obsessed about teaching coding to children in school. Frankly speaking, childhood is the age to teach good moral values, build character and integrity, the value of dreaming, playing, imagination and building resilience and cultivate multiple hobbies to blossom into a healthy individual. All these shiny objects such as coding etc. can follow between the ages of 18-25 years where the kid has atleast some cognitive ability to discern and ask themselves if they want to really pursue that path, rather than being told to do so by parents/society at a tender age in school.

children will memorize the code in school like they do most of the subjects. Recipe for disaster. If you want to improve the education system then just remove all of the exams and instead create projects. each kid will do an individual product of the subject matter and question according to their project should be asked. simple. this way kids will actually learn the things and also won't be able to cheat. Plus there is no pressure to pass a 10 memory test exams to get 90% above scores.

Though this system sounds perfect there's caveats in this too. School projects get copied left and right and it will be only possible by giving everyone unique projects every year which is not feasible. Also memorization is a part of almost every skill there is hence ignoring it absolutely would not be beneficial for anyone (even though suck in memorizing this is true). Also what about the students who don't wanna pursue science in their careers? I know there won't be any perfect system but the marks of an individual should be a certain percent of a project and a certain percent of marks which is what we currently have but the exam pattern and how projects are handled are absolutely rubbish.

@@sohagdas8351 projects do not mean science projects. For a kindergarten kid the project might be to make painting or craft. And yes it should be unique to everyone because everyone has different skills and intelligence. Rahi baat memory ki to wo apne aap strong hoti agar brain ka gray matter badhega. Aur brain ka gray matter logical and creative task karne se badhta hai. Ratta marne se bhi badhta hai lekin wo tarika kam effective hai.

Well that is a double edged sword. I do agree with let kids be kids. On the other hand I see so many unhappy poor people out there who talk about inequality and unfairness. I look at many of these people and think back to some of the people I knew in my youth and come to the conclusion they probably just done fucked up in life. Some people just coast through life, doing the bare minimum and then when life's responsibilities inevitably hit them, they are completely un prepared and cry that life is unfair.

@@johncasey5594 well john i dont know if you like my answer or not but you know we all gonna die sooner or later thats truth we know from the first day we born everyone has their own fair share of story but money or social fame doesn't really makes you happy the people who often complain about being poor are ones who spend most of their money on nonsense materials top of that they always run behind money look around you and you will find people who are finding solutions for others are the ones who are making money it doesn't have to be technically even if you start a tree planting organization people would support you but you have to leave the fear what would they say and start acting people take their life so seriously only to know that it was just short run of experience

@Ꮶαƚѕuƙi βαƙugօ Of late Millennials and Zennials have been fed so much Liberal indoctrination bullshit and the World has been alter with so many Liberal policies, these last two generations will have no where near the life or prosperity of the Gen Xers or Baby Boomers. Millennials and Zennials blame Boomers and Gen Xers, and while this is true, it is the Liberal Gen Xer and Boomers that fucked things up for them.
