In a recent video I put it to the comments that if you wanted to see me go through a bunch of fundamentals of 12v & 24v DC to comment "DC Explain". After a handful of comments came through asking to see it, I decided to film it & put it up as I wrap up 2023. We go through everything there is to know including DCDC Chargers, Isolators, Relays, Lithium Batteries & much, much more. Enjoy!

One of the best 12v videos I've seen. More of this tech stuff would be great, you've got a knack for it. One thing I will add for those learning about earthing is that cable size is dependant on the full length of both positive and negative cables combined. So say the accessory is 2 meters from the battery, you would need to size the cable for a 4 meter run (2 meters positive/red to the accessory, 2 meters negative/black back to battery). However if you have a good body/chassis earthing point right near the accessory, you only need to size a 2 meter run of red cable. I used to assume running twin core for everything and always earthing back to battery was best, but for some accessories that can mean needing a big fat 16mm2 twin core (red and black) cable compared to say a 6mm2 single core (red only) cable. Both methods are appropriate and safe - but one is about 1/3rd the overall thickness, a lot cheaper and way easier to work with especially when dealing with firewall grommets etc. Just need to ensure good earthing straps which you have explained so articulately. Hope I have all of that correct. Cheers mate

2:05 if you go to the next setting to the right, and press the right-most button, it will give you a proper Continuity Tester mode that will beep when there's continuity. Much easier than trying to look at a screen when you're upside down under the dash trying to trace some wiring 🤣 Sometimes you'll still need to use the resistance reading if you're trying to find a dodgy wire that has high resistance but still enough continuity to trigger the tester, but for general fault finding, the continuity tester mode is much easier.
@timmyhasheart

Awesome video mate. You say you don’t normally fuse your switch circuits and only light circuit. I have always wired the positive through the relay, not the negative. The way you have it the LED light is hot all the time. You did the switch the right way but the load is wrong. The relay should be hot, not the light, because typically the light is a long run of wire but the relay is close to the battery, under the bonnet, and fused via the vehicle's maxi fuse(s)
@timmyhasheart
@timmyhasheart 6 ай бұрын
Appreciate that dude thank you, honestly I usually both switch and provide load in the positive side and then earth wherever is convenient because it also makes illuminating switches easier too and fusing and what not, but I just had black cables cut short and it was just most “visually pleasing” when videoing for entry level to make it as neat as possible without going into the unimportance of colour and what not. But I do understand you and you’ve taught me something so thank you 🙏🏻

Tim - I have a redarc 2000w inverter, unmounted and a Landcruiser 100 series hdtfe twin battery. I don’t want it permanently mounted. I want to run cable from the auxiliary battery in the front of the Landcruiser to the rear of it in the tyre jack compartment to connect to the 2000w inverter. Can this be done without installing a battery in the back next to my inverter?
@timmyhasheart
@timmyhasheart 7 ай бұрын
Yeah absolutely you can install anything anywhere it would just be a matter of knowing what it’s going to draw and running cable and fusing accordingly. I just checked the specs and it can draw up to 83a. So measure how far the distance is, my guess would be about 5m, so cable needs to be good for 83a at 5m and fuse would need to be as close to the battery as possibly with probably a 100a midi fuse or circuit breaker 👍🏻👍🏻
@robertmillar2037
@robertmillar2037 7 ай бұрын
@@timmyhasheart 2000w at 12v is about 170amps. At 4-5m I’m going to need massive cable aren’t I ?
@timmyhasheart
@timmyhasheart 7 ай бұрын
Yeah but it’s inverted to AC & there would be a transformer in there so that rule doesn’t really apply, so if you look at Redarc’s website it says the peak draw is 83a, so 5m at 83a will require probably around 50mm2 cable and a 100a fuse.

Go the Patrol! good to see ! This is really good ! I liked building my own with jaycar components. but best to start with a plan first. as my circuit board got way outta capacity once i started adding things 🛻😎🤙📹
