Ron, I just moved into a new home, and your video got me from a mess of wires in a structured wiring enclosure to phone service in every room. I looked all over for a coherent and complete explanation, and yours is the only one that I actually understood. Thanks so much.

Excellent Rob. Simple explanations. You know, I have always wondered why in the 8P8C connectors (and RJ-11), the blue pair has the ring on the left when Orange, green, and brown have their rings on the right.

Don't go crazy with that Ron. It's trival, at best. My suspicion is it either has to do with cross-talk prevention or a hold-over from the Princess-phone days when they put power on the 2nd Pair.

The old phone man who explained tip & ring to me said that positive and negative are irrelevant to phone lines because polarity is (well, was) used for alarm system signaling over leased pairs from the telco. If the tip side is positive and ring is negative the system shows normal, but if the polarity is reversed it goes into an alarm condition. No polarity at all generates a trouble signal (which could be a Bad Guy cutting the lines). I think you mention elsewhere that the CO sends AC over the same line to drive the customer's ringer.

This unit is an old Radio Shack in line telephone unit designed for the hearing impaired. It processes volume and tone of the incoming voices for better comprehension. The connecting telephone line cords I do have don't fit the manufactured ends provided on the module. Thay look the same, but are not wide enough to connect the ends on the cords I have in my home. You're not the first to have problems with my explanations. Chalk it up to ADD and a few other synaptic brain anomalies. You should have seen the instructor FUME in my creative writing class. Fred

I did so much Cat 5, 5ABCDE & Cat 6 if I had a penny for every foot I'd be rich. You really need to do the split 50 cheat sheet. Class C is limited to 50 VDC nominal (they push it to over 50VDC a lot) .Nice primer. I had to double check my wiring on the old RG BY to new 4 line due to a phone problem. I know my house is fine. The computer is running off broadband coax, so we only need voice. The Fax uses Cat 5E 4 pair. All is good, even nasty old black insulation 40s clad wiring tested fine.

I ran into a system recently - The phone company, in the outside box, had ran Orange and White as line one. The customer asked to have a second line connected, the phone company said that the job was complete. Upon arrival I found that they had connected Blue and White as well as Green and White BUT the lines where not live, with service from the phone company, SO.....I just wired Blue and White assuming it would be the second line. Is this just an error with the technician that did the initial wiring? If it turns out that is not the correct second line, Blue and White, of course its not hard to change it on the 66 block, first time I have ran into this issue from the phone company. But you do far more telephony than I do and wanted your opinion.

So what's the current thinking on 568A vs B? I wired my house with B simply because that was the practice at work, but I think 568A might actually have an advantage in mixed voice/data systems. 568A puts pairs 1 & 2 (blue, orange) in the positions needed for a 2-line analog phone with an RJ-11 plug, while with 568B you have to remember to put your second analog line on pair 3 (the green pair).

yes I agree. It seems that instead of a lets say having a national uniformity, every company does things different, or should I say their own way. which causes the lines in homes, apartments, residential and commercial buildings to be cut spliced holes drilled for new wiring and really a waste of time and money, and materials.

We disconnected our phone jack and have a 4 wire line Blue and Blue-White, Orange and Orange-White; that connects to an 8 wire line Blue and Blue-White, Orange and Orange-White, Green and Green-White, Brown and Brown-White. There was also splices inserted connecting some of the wires, the red 3-wire splice to be exact. I wanted to know how to connect the 4 wire colors to a phone jack to the 8 wire and where the splice connectors should go. Since jack also acts as a junction to connect the two different type of wires together. Maybe they spliced the 4 wire to the 8 wire then connected the splice to of the three to add a phone jack?

I'll be running the low voltage for a new house I am building. I am experienced running CAT5 for Ethernet, but I've recently been under the impression that I can simply run additional data jacks to wherever I may want phone access, and simply plug a rj12 cable into the oversize port and it will just run off the innermost 4 pins. I'd have the same pattern on both ends of the line and then have the ability to use the jack as both data (if I patch Ethernet to the other end) or phone. Is this assumption correct, or should I look at doing something else?

Calling in a phone repair is like calling "dial an excuse". (20 excuses in under 5 minutes). Kinda like Dominoes Pizza, only after 30 minutes the only thing free is more excuses! The last Quest tech that did internal wiring had one wire hooked up wrong so it inductively picked up signal off another wire. Ring that ancient black 2 pr wire out! No way am I paying for work like that! I know my internal wiring is good now! I will run new Cat 6 throughout this winter. I sure miss my old Ideal hammer!

Hi, Sometimes I have a dial tone and the sometimes I don't. When I do have a dial tone, I can make make out going calls from my land line. However, when I call my land line the phone rings only one time and then it sounds like someone has answered it. I had a technician come out tell me that my problem is inside. Can you please give me an idea of what the problem could possibly be. Thank you.

Mary Bradley Mary if the tech checked your line and it is working properly. The problem could be the phone you are using or the wiring. Try another phone and see if that helps if not look at the connections in the wiring. You may have a reversal in the pir you are using for that line. Good luckRon

+Mary Bradley This is a very typical problem, but potentially hard to find. Generally all of the phone jacks are parallel together and the MOST LIKELY cause is insects or spiders that have made a nest in a jack. Dampness will make this type of problem worse. With the CO disconnected at the NID and no dial tone, you need to take a resistance reading looking into the house. Since the wires are in parallel, you can do it from anywhere. >1 Meg ohm or so should be safe. Low values, are not good. Now, the hard part. What leg is causing the issue. You start disconnecting in a way that helps you find the source. If you have 10 lines and quad cable, you can pull 5 off and check. If the problem is solved it;s in the 5 you took off. So, put 3 back on and test again. So, very quickly, you can narrow down the leg. Everything may not be home run either. Disconnect the device at the jack(s). In a LOT of cases, inspect the wiring at the back of the jacks, especially the older ones. A spider may have made a nest. This, same sort of issue can occur at the pole or both or any place along the way. Re-doing the wiring so this is trouble-shootable next time easily could be in the cards or you may have found the same place it will occur again. "Drip loops" are important inside and out. Water follows cables and drops off at the lowest point. So, if water finds a loop, the water drips off the lowest point of the loop and can't climb uphill into the jack. With the test jack unplugged, there may be a 1/2 ringer load still presented to the phone company. So, when you think you have your house disconnected, the phone company sees 1/2 of a phone. It needs that do do testing. If you have home runs and can disconnect both ends and you know it's length, a Time Domain Reflectometer can help you find the shorts and opens. === Loud buzzing or hum is a different sort of issue.

@RonKipperDatacomm1
@RonKipperDatacomm1 8 жыл бұрын
Brandon you can buy VoIP phone systems designed for many phone lines. If you are prewiring it one Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable to each outlet should do it but 2 cables is always better or future use and you are already pulling one so cost is not that much more. Take care. Ron

Ron, I have the Keystone jacks for the wall plates. I'm using cat5e plenum grade for the phone. I want to have all four lines available for future use. How do I punch this down on the rack? We'll have around 48 runs, so do I just use a 48-port patch panel, punch down the ring and tip 4 incoming lines to port 1 or just plug the end into plug one, then daisy chain all the punch downs together, where each coloured punch down is daisy chained to its own colour? For example, the blue punch down for Port 1 is also connected to the blue punch down on ports 2 through 48? And just do that for all 8 wires? Or do they make a special rackmount patch panel for telephone that expects cat5e or cat6? Thanks!!!!!

@RonKipperDatacomm1 6 жыл бұрын
Spork sounds like a little bit of a wiring job. I don't know what kind of a rack you are using but this could be done fairly easily with a few 66 blocks if all you are using the cable for is traditional phone lines. If you are using a VoIP system then use a standard style data rack and Cat 5e jacks on either end and use patch cable to tie it all together. Good luck Ron

Thanks Ron. We're just using a small 36 unit HPE Advanced series rack, 19" 600mm x 800mm I believe. Right now, we're going to be using the cat5e for traditional phone lines, but the idea was to set it up in such a way when we make the switch to VOiP (we have to pay down some of these bills and save more), we could make the switch fairly easy like.

Good Video Ron. One thing I don't understand. I have Cat 5 cable that has a Blue and a Blue/White striped wire (among others). Why do the phone cable diagrams not show this correctly? They (including your video) show BOTH blue pair wires as 'striped'. In your video you refer to the large white stripes as 'Blue/White' and you refer to the large blue striped wire as 'Blue'. Why don't the pictures just show a BLUE wire and a BLUE/WHITE striped wire like it comes in the cable?? Thanks very much for your response.

Hey Scott like many thinks in this industry that is how it is referred to. The mostly blue wire is referred to as blue and the other white blue. I am sure phone companies decided on that many years ago although most of this cable today is used for data applications. Sorry not much help Ron

Hi! Hope anyone could enlighten me with this.. I'm trying to make an adapter from Female RJ10 4P4C to Male Audio/Mic, but I am not sure if this is possible.. I would like to know if the cabling or pinning will still be like 1-BLACK 2-RED 3-GREEN 4-YELLOW WHICH FOR MICROPHONE: 1-BLACK 4-YELLOW FOR AUDIO OUT: 2-RED 3-GREEN I am actually trying to use my headset with RJ10 PLUG, that's why i'm thinking of making the adapter my self since I have all the equipment needed.. Also I'm opting to use the cable of my old headset with microphone and volume control for the Audio/Mic Jack, but I'm having a hard time searching if where to specifically attach the cable from RJ10 to the small-motherboard of my old headset cable. Please enlighten me folks.. Thanks ahead of time...

+New Yorks Finest Hey nice to hear from you the colors red(not pink)/green should be line 1 and yellow/black line 2 if you have one. The phone company should have marked their incoming line then connect the wiring to it and that should make the jacks work. In the phones that need 2pins, I can use blue + whie/blue for it to work. But what if i need the jack config for a 4pins phone?.. Do i need to use blue + white/blue and which other color of my CAT5?. Thanks your for video. Is well designed but since I'm spanish i can only read english for the moment.

Very helpful background information. I have a couple of questions on wiring an older style 1965 era phone wall jack. Can’t plug in the jack due to gummed up wires inside the wall jack. When I took off the face plate to replace it I found the jack has metal prongs running up and down on both sides of the jack and the wires coming in are wrapped between the prongs like a noodle around the tines of a fork. Question 1. Can this type of wall jack be replaced with the newer style where the wires are pushed into slots on the backside of the jack? 2. Can the phone wires coming in from the wall be cut to insert them or will that cause the connection in other rooms to be disrupted. I assume it doesn’t matter that the phone cable colors are blue with yellow stripes/ yellow with blue stripes and red with blue stripes/blue with red stripes as long as the wire pairs match the diagram on that came with the wall jack replacement? I haven’t been able to find anything like this wall jack model or any ideas for rewiring, but you seem to have a lot of knowledge in this area. Thanks in advance!

Guarumo Perro I am not sure what could be wrong. Try disconnecting the phone service from the wiring in the house. Then take a multimeter set to AC Volts and see if you can find any stray voltages from the conductors to ground. Some times an AC signal becomes present on the phone lines.Be careful if you find any voltage and take care.
