The predominantly white coat is rough and wiry; the V-shaped ears are neatly folded forward, the better to point up the face’s distinctive, and completely irresistible, expression.
In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Wire Fox Terriers that you might not know.
A Quick Overview:
[Group: Terrier Group]
Weight: 18 pounds (male), 15-17 (female)
Height: 15½ inches
Life Expectancy: 12-15 years
Wires are delightful pets for families looking for an upbeat, friendly companion with loads of personality. As terriers, they possess the typical independence and prey drive of this feisty canine clan. They are smart and companionable; training can be a challenge but by no means impossible. Excellent athletes, natural comedians, and charming housemates, Wires are long-lived and low-shedding.
The Wire has always been a consistently successful show dog, with, at this writing, a record 13 Westminster Kennel Club Bests in Show. In one of the great bargains in show-dog history, Matford Vic, a Wire bought from a farmer for $10, won Westminster in 1915 and 1916. In England, Wire and Smooth Fox Terriers have been recognized as separate breeds, with different registries and breed standards, since the late 19th century. The AKC did not recognize Wire and Smooth Fox Terriers as distinct breeds until 1985.
The Wire Fox Terrier was originally bred to "go to ground" to chase small game from their dens. Although considered one breed for many years, interbreeding of Smooth Fox Terriers and Wire Fox Terriers ceased in the early 1900s. Except for coat, however, the two breeds are essentially identical. Though the Wire is the more recent of the two, paintings of the dogs confirm that both coat varieties have been around since the middle of the 18th century.

I’ve owned several different breeds over the years (mostly rescues), but we got our WFT Tyler 12 years ago due to the breed being hypoallergenic. Our Tyler was the sweetest, most loving little guy anyone could ever hope for. We lost him suddenly just a couple of weeks ago due to sudden illness and our hearts are still absolutely broken. He was different from other WFT’s in that from the start, he never had any interest in chasing squirrels or other such animals. He hated water and there was nothing we could do to get him in the pool. Although he was high energy when it came time to play, he’d cuddle up with us or just relax at our feet when we were done. He is so badly missed in our house. I would highly recommend this breed. When/if we get over Tyler’s death, we’ll get another.

Bring light back in you life, if you have the time now get a new buddy. You might find one that has lost his owner due to the terrible virus. I lost my best buddy 4 years ago to the poisoned dog food . Biggles has not replaced Mosby, but has healed our hearts.

@@Deelitee We got another WFT from the same breeder (Birchhurst) we got our Tyler from. We went with them again because they told us they had a puppy from the same bloodline as Tyler, so we figured he’d be as sweet (although we also realized all dogs are individuals as well). This WFT ended up being a nightmare. He was mean and had bitten every member of our family at some point despite our loving patience and care. One time, my adult daughter was simply walking to her bedroom and hadn’t even interacted with him. This dog got up from lying across the room, ran up behind her and took a chunk out of the back of her leg. We still didn’t give up on him and brought him to trainers as well as a dog behaviorist. We were actually seeing some improvement when he was diagnosed with pancreatitis. We were so careful with his diet since we knew pancreatitis runs in the breed, but he still got it. We treated that successfully, but he still ended up dying from what they could only guess was some sort of cancer. We tried so hard with him and it tore us apart that we could never connect with him and that he had such a painful end. This was a year ago that he died. After taking a year to heal, we decided to go with another breed and got an Aussiedoodle a month ago. He is amazing. He’s fit in so well with us and is extremely smart and loving. He’s been a blessing. Sorry for the length of this response, but a lot has happened since my original comment.

@@TheBadTrad I’m so sorry! I have a golden doodle. I was told by a gal at the dog park that my girl got the best parts of the two breeds. I know some doodles can be crazy too. I like the personality of the JRT and what I’ve seen of the WFT but have not been acquainted with the breed so, I’m trying to get a feel of them. My doodle has been perfect so I’m sure it’ll be hard to beat! So sorry about your loss and am glad the new baby is healing for you. They’re beautiful. ❤️

@@Deelitee Thank you. It’s been tough, but we like to say that Tyler sent us this little one we have now (Frankie). He’s fully in the velociraptor mode with his puppy teeth, but there’s such a sweetness to him. I wish you the best of luck with your golden doodle. I hope he brings you many years of love and happiness!

I have had 4 wft. You have to watch out because they are escape artist. I lost two of them because of that. It broke my heart. They can be taught to live with cats. Grouchy with small children. So much fun for adults or older children! A complex and fun personality . Independent but affectionate. For some reason I have been luckier with males. In cats and other breeds I prefer female animals . I think I will always have a wft by my side.

Good list of traits. I have had 4. This generally hit the high points. I would add loyalty and affection. Our current dog crawl will into my lap when I am onThe couch, then low crawls up to hug me and rest his head under my chin. So sweet. He also loves or hates other dogs. How he chooses which is which we do not know. Female male breed color no rhyme or reason.

My young WF gets on well with any type of dogs and live with little older Lakeland terrier, great friendship going on there. The trick is to make the effort to socialize them A LOT from early on and the owners themselves have to show example that is joy to get to meet and greet other dogs. And like with all terriers, they need lots and lots of mental and physical stimulation..they have to be kept busy doing stuff and calmed the excitement down before they get too lively. Not allowing them to play without adequate rest in between their activity session will help them be in good moods as well...mine 'don't have time' to sleep but would rather play all day long if I would not interfere and direct them on their beds every so often.

"Don't socialize very well with cats". Like most dogs, that depends on their upbringing though. My cat and wire fox terrier sleep together. The cat loves to rub against the WFT face. They also grew up together though...got the WFT when he was 2 months old, and 2 weeks later got the kitten, who was 2 months old too. They grew up together, so even when it comes to random cats, the WFT pays them no mind.

We have a 'wire-poo' (WFT - Poodle mix) and she LOVES our cat, and like yours, they tend to sleep cuddled together. She is a year and a half old now, and the cat is a 9 year old male. We have another dog, a Zuchon (Teddy bear - Shih Tzu/Bichon Frise mix) He's about 4. All of them get along great, the only problem I have with the WFT is she loves hunting squirrels so we have to keep her on a lead and watch her close.

My WFT first saw a cat when visiting with another house where his dog friend and cats live together, the other dog never chases their cats so our dog just learnt that cats aren’t things to be chased, they’re just kind of there. He’s never bothered them unless they decided to bother him which is just fine.

I take care of a horse stable and have my wft with me through out most of my day. I keep him leashed to my belt. He rides shotgun in the pickup and rides in the tractor. We rescued him. He does not get on well with cats or other animals and will kill them if given the opportunity. He was allowed to display aggressive behavior as a puppy. The breed is allusive to begin with. That behavior was reinforced through punishment. He's a good guy. We go just about everywhere together. He sleeps against my legs at night. I'll get another when his time here is over. Oliver is his name.

i got my wire fox cross 3 weeks ago, bred for a hunting dog , he refused to hunt and was beaten for not doing it, he is six months old and gets on great with my other rescued dog and from the moment he arrived has never shown any interest in our three cat`s, he has become very close to me but very wary of other humans, before i had him he had no training whatsoever but he is learning ultra fast, his progress video will be going on my channel in about a weeks time, and i will do an update each month.

Asta from The Thin Man movies with Myrna Loy and William Powell in the 1930's was one of the most famous WFT's in Hollywood and I believe made the breed the most popular dog (in the USA at least) for a period of time.
