Learn how create beautiful shapes in wire! Make bails for pendants, links for chains or just new shapes to wire-wrap or create with, using only a few simple hand tools and some wire. WARNING: This is highly addicting!
Wire-working is a great way to get into jewelry making! It's also a skill you'll use often during your jewelry career. So, if you want to get a great start or build on your skills, check out this video (and the other two in the series)! Learn how to put all these beautiful shapes together (and learn a few additional shapes) in "The Wire-Worked Pendant Video . Explore even more wire shapes in my Wire-Working Basics video - All right here on my channel (see links below)!
Check out these related videos: Wire Working Basics - • Wire Working Basics: ... , The Wire-Worked Pendant - • The Wire-Worked Pendan... and an oldie but, a goodie - Fancy Wire - • Fancy Wire | Jewelry T... . How to Anneal Wire - • Annealing Wire | Jewel... .
I've got well over a 100 videos on KZfaq and I'm sure you can find something to set your creative brain aflame.
I want to apologize for the typo in the video. My words were supposed to read: The failure "of" an idea, object or process..." I left out the "of". Didn't want to reload the entire video for that. Sorry!
(Note: There are affiliate links afoot! By purchasing through my affiliate links you help to support this channel AND because many of my links are via Amazon Smile, you also get to help support my charity of choice: Chimera Arts Makerspace! (chimeraarts.org) Our fabulous jewelry studio offers mentoring, business assistance, studio space, meetups, community events and classes. Chimera also has a full wood shop, metals shop, fiber arts shop, 3-D printers, CNC and a laser cutter - just to name a few of our activities. Chimera Arts is a non-profit, community based art space. We thank you for your support!
Tools used in this video:
I love my Bench Yoke Vise for holding all my mandrels. Here's my affiliate link from Amazon so you can pick one up AND help to support two art-based endeavors - mine and Chimera Arts Makerspace. It's a win, win, win situation! amzn.to/2Yy38Ww
I also love a quality plier and I have a few that I've scrimped and saved for, over the years. Tronex is one of my favorites. These well-made pliers are tools you'll have forever: amzn.to/2QcjSzz. Swanstrom's and Lindstrom's pliers are also quality tools. (amzn.to/2EgAIss and amzn.to/2EgAMII respectively).
Wubbers has really nice, wide, flat-nose pliers. At Amazon: amzn.to/2QafgKmv.
Wire cutters are a must with wire work and, as many of you already know, my favorites are the Power Max Full Flush Cutter by Keiba: amzn.to/2YGGefP. They cut up to 12 gauge and cut one really flush end. You might also want a pair of fine cutter for getting into hard-to-reach places. I like the Tronex model 5223 or 5222 but, they only cut up to 19 gauge (soft wire - no steel) so, getting into tight places with 14 or 16 gauge wire won't work. These Micro-Sheer Xuron 9200 cutters will cut soft wire up to 14 gauge. amzn.to/2HqnwmK.
Love a good hammer? This little Fretz hammer - the HMR-401 planishing hammer - (that I use in the video) is great for detail work. It's really light but, does the job and it has one flat face and one rounded. amzn.to/2HrbYjf
Get a nice steel block with a high polish too! I use these all the time. This one is from Pepetools.com: pepetools.com/products/new-de...

Thanks so much for this! I found it really helpful. I've been sitting here all night grumping at wire because it's not bending the way I want it to.

LOL! When young...back in the 60s...the saying was, "somebody slap me". This was said with a stupid smart alec type of voice. You made me think of it when you said you needed to slap yourself. Thanks for the memory. ALSO, thanks for the super vid. Oh, and your hair looks good, too!

I know this is an old video but I just wanted to say that no one is EVER too old to learn a new skill, and soldering is just a skill. These days there’s no excuse since we have culinary touches that can be used to solder small pieces. Soldering is an infinitely fascinating and very simple process that will open a whole world of creative options.

I love you. You motivate me. If the two ends of the antler don't quite match, before you squish the middle you can grab the middle with round nosed pliars and roll the center one way or the other to even them out. If that's too organic, while you hold the middle with the round nose pliars bend the long end out and the short end in the even them out. Much easier to just fix it there before you go on.

Patrick, do you know what she was using when she rolled the wire back to being flat after she made the 2nd beveled end?? I need that in my life... an anvil, by chance?

Nancy-I don't have a kiln and am wondering if I can just hit the wire with a torch to anneal the wire as I go along and if it's for seconds or minutes. I'm a newbie but have been watching you for years....I think you're cool!
