Here's another quick wire wrapping tutorial on how I shape and hammer wire to make a pendant frame for wire wrapping my Tree of Life pendants! I show basic techniques on How to Shape and Hammer Wire frames to harden and add 'flare' to your wire jewelry designs. Use smaller wire, make a smaller frame, make two and use them for tree of life earrings too!

Tools:
Chasing Hammer
Steel Bench Block
Flush Cutters
Round Nose Pliers
Chain Link or Flat Nose Pliers
Jewelers file (if you're tapering ends)
Sandpaper
Materials:
I'm using 16 gauge, round, dead soft copper wire.
This can be done with 18g, 20g or even a large 14g

Save your fingers when hammering; use painters tape to hold it to the surface. No residue, safer, win win.

I use tape to hold my wires together but hammering is more dynamic and the piece is usually in slight motion while you hammer. You can use tape for sure if you are hammering, it's an idea, but I find that when I teach my students, teaching them to keep the fingers out of the way is simply the best way... at least with hammering. Thanks again!

I love this desin and i will use it thank you so much❤ i have 1 question.. oxidizing the tree of life.. it's not easy to remove the gemmstone chips and i find no answers with google. How do you oxidizing you're tree of life. Or whitch gemmstones are safe too use with L.o.s ? I'm lost in this😅

Thanks for reaching out, Peggy, I build my trees in a different way, adding the beads at the very end. While my tree of life tutorials don't show the patina process, it would be done after the tree is sculpted and on the frame, then I patina and polish, then I add the beads at the end. I hope that helps! In regards to which stones are safe, there is a lot of information on the internet, google search " is (stone name) safe for a liver of sulfur treatment " ... or something of that sort and you should get answers specific to your stones.

Hello, first time at your channel. I have few queries 😊 - What is a soft dead wire? - When we say "we strengthen the wire", does this mean that the wire will not easily bend? - And another thing, can we hammer stainless steel wire? Thanks a lot for your help.

Which grade sand paper do you use when you file your wire?

800 to 1200, which is quite fine to finer.

What is the grit of the sandpaper?

I like to use 600 wet dry paper. It does the job but is fine enough to not take away too much metal too fast. Hope that helps.

I use a lot of wire of different sizes and types, but this frame, is 16 gauge, Copper, Round, Soft wire. I hope that helps!

Why does my copper wire look dull color after I hammer it? I've tried a rubber mallet as well as a metal hammer, but it still looks dullish... nothing as nice as yours. Anyway thanks!

Thanks for your question... given I don't know if you're using natural, bare copper or anti-tarnish copper, the reasons why it might dull after hammering are a few... natural copper is by nature, dull with no shine, right off the spool... so hammering as well as wrapping often also means, finishing with polishing. If you are using anti-tarnish copper (coated so that it stays shiny)... then the hammering is breaking the seal on the metal and therefore exposing the raw metal... I hope this helps but the reason my pieces are shiny during and at finish is because I polish all of my metal after the piece is finished.
