Installing a trolling motor is a great way to reduce the overall cost of upgrading your boat to the newest trolling motor technologies. Kratochvil has installed hundreds of trolling motors and shares many tips and tricks to speed the process and ensure the job is done right the first time. While our original Minn Kota Ultrex install video featured an aluminum bass boat, we tackle upgrading an older fiberglass bass boat this time around, which brings about some fiberglass-specific pointers.
An older boat that floats is just as capable as a newer one as long as it's equipped with quality electronics and a durable and powerful trolling motor with built-in boat control capabilities. This video is aimed squarely at the "do it yourself" angler that likes saving money and enjoys tackling some hands-on projects.

We use it probably a dozen days each year on our small raft.-original review- We got this motor the other day and tested it out. I don't have anything to compare it to, but it seems good to me. It has all the features advertised - the motor housing is metal. We will see how it performs longer term and I will revise this review if needed. Some initial observations:- Good thrust, moves our boat around really well- It comes with a circuit breaker but no switch - so there's no way to kill the motor other than yanking the connection off the battery. I installed an inline switch.- The mount bracket is plastic and I worry it might break- There are a number of plastic parts that I worry about, but the most important ones are metal or some kind of composite

He nailed everything in this video to a T! Excellent instruction, at 10:15 he states to use an impact to get more pull, this is incorrect use a drill on low speed high torque. Impacts strip screws

As always awesome instruction. I'm still running my older Fortrex. At times I feel the motor is getting louder. I'm networked with a Helix 12 Chirp on the bow and a Helix 12 Mega SI Gen 2. Extra bird equipment to include a 360 (non mega).

Appreciate the comment. The Ultrex is also a popular trolling motor for walleye, pike/musky, and multi-specie anglers in general, so this content is helpful for a range of boats (the 60'' shaft size most common for deeper hulls).

Great instructions. I need to see what trasducer configuration i have on the motor because its definitely not hooked to my screen. I have a big plug that connects all my things at one time but there is a separate trasducer strapped around the motor thats hooked up to the screen

Great video. I have an ultrex that's waiting to be put on my boat, it's replacing an Ulterra. The Ulterra was hard wired but there is an application for a plug. Is there a way you prefer, hard wired or plug?

Great video- I’m going to install an ultrex 24v on my Tracker pro 170. Do you recommend a certain quick release mounting bracket? Should I put a support plate under my quick release to prevent any welds from cracking? I’ve read of some Trackers welds cracking under trolling motors.

Do you need the stabilizer bar? If you use the velcro strap is it really going to bounce that much?

I use anti seize always on prop nut and i use electrical tape instead of zipties on the cables. And you need to crimp those ferrules and i would use electrical grease

So the ethernet cable wire coming from the head of troll motor is not needed if I install a DI transducer directly to my head unit on the bow??

I just acquired a ranger 519vs that has a ultrex mounted the same way however the motor is 180 degrees from how yours is , does that matter ?

If I have a Helix 9 on the bow and a Helix 12 on the console linked via the two dongles and the ethernet cable, how do I wire in the Ultrex iPilot? Is there an additional port on the back of the bow unit, do I need a T joint intersection in that ethernet line, or am I required to purchase the 5-way hub?

So does is the pointed part of the bow guard the only part that needs 1.5 inches of clearance or do you need 1.5 inches across the total length of bow guard?

Just curious because I don’t know any better but for the heading sensor you say you can pull from trolling motor power but the Ultrex is at least 24 volts and the heading sensor requires 12 ?

When I deploy the motor, the shaft is not strait . Can I get some kind of a spacer or do I have to make my own ?

Nope, Spot-Lock will still work fine without the Heading Sensor. You just won't get the Spot-Lock Jog feature, which probably isn't a big deal.

Nope, soon it won't work at all, anymore, so you won't have to worry about it.🤷‍♂️mine wouldn't even sync to the handheld remote! Good luck and have fun cleaning the weed tangles off the prop and around the head. Smh

Hi Elliott, no, the Spot-Lock GPS function is built into the head of the trolling motor and works out of the box. The heading sensor is needed to use the Spot-Lock Jog feature.

Ultrex is cheaply made and unreliable. I was told today there’s a two month back order for the boards. It will be July before new boards are received. It’s going to be a long summer for a lot of people. Crazy!! The first 18 months was good. The last four months have been one problem after the next. I recommend researching different brands before purchasing.

My nav and spotlock features quit within a year and there's no service retailers close. Was actually told to remove the 12 screws holding the bottom plate of the foot pedal on and check all connections, unplugging and plugging back in a few times each. Smh Why would ANY connections be exposed to water or the elements on a boat's trolling motor?! Doesn't Minnkota realize their products are used ON THE WATER? Or that our boats are towed in the rain, sometimes? How cheap and shortsighted can a company be while charging 2.5k for a product?🤦

Thought it was a great video until I saw the zip ties on the wiring. Big mistake! Use electrical tape instead.

Don't do it!!!!! You're gonna regret it! THEY ARE PURE JUNK!! MANY guides and pro anglers are dumping them! Some actually finding old Fortex motors to go back to. The Ultrex is totally unreliable and the foot pedal is a MAJOR weak point. Mine wouldn't ever sync to the handheld controller. The nav and spotlock features on mine no longer function, either.

@@TannerOwensOutdoors it IS true and there are MANY videos out there about all the issues. The steering sensor being non-encapsulated/sealed is a major issue. How could they put out a product like that with sensors open to the environment and subject to erosion and failure? The components in the foot pedal on early models ARE NOT WATERPROOF OR RESISTANT and they knew it.
