This is real and 100% accurate I'm a NYC dot-com-boom-bust bro now living in Shenzhen and Shenzhen's innovation & NY can attitude is only surpassed by it's 30 year village to city growth in terms of awesomeness - and the spicy food here is pretty good (thank you Sichuan)

No different to the US stealing rocket technology from the Germans or Atomic ideas from the English. The fact is everyone steals from everyone it's how we evolve. Companies like Apple are already dead, they just don't know it.

I am from ShenZhen. I was raised and my city just casually turns out to be one of the most powerful and efficient metropolis in the world. However, the education is really bad there. We really need a revolution in education system to get rid off all the social-climbing dodgy teachers, who are forcing fish to climb trees. We need a new Deng!

15:10 - It's freaking amazing to see how they easily produce an iPhone copy. A company spend some days and some billions just in hardware and these guys almost do it in the same hour, of course its not exactly the same, but still incredible. Congrats Wired, amazing documentary!

Free market capitalism. The western world is too socialist. China adapted free market capitalism in these cities (mostly free). It would be nice if the US got back to that, and stopped pricing itself out of work.

The answer is, because you want to - yes, *you*. Makers (myself included) can use off-the-shelf components and 3D printing to create things, but there is a limit to what can be created with these existing parts/techniques. Remeber that even the existing parts/techniques came about largely through monetization as a motivation. New (repeat: *new*) materials, ICs and techniques require a lot of cooperation among a lot of people across a myriad of cultures - each with their own set of motivations. How do you get all of these people on the same page and coordinated toward a new goal or product (new components, new machines, ...)? This is an old problem, and it was solved long ago when the concept of a medium of exchange was implemented - money. Duncan Turner (in the video) did not explain this well, but that's the goal - coming out with the next *new* thing, not just an iteration using existing materials. Without new components and techniques over time, Shenzhen, as depicted here, would grind to a halt. And without new techniques that take evironmentally sensitive production into account, pollution will continue to be a problem. So again, even *you* want to monetize 'it'. PS - You're on KZfaq; it wouldn't be here without having been monetized, nor would its competition be.

i agree there will need to be some sort of a market and monetization in some way or another to keep things moving to some degree , but im pretty sure ( i could be wrong) there's a closed loop self sustainable way of doing things instead of a system that creates dependencies , that's the point of the maker movement to someone like me, to have the means of production and access to the information through a commons.

there's something better than the market system , probably. Similarly, there was a lot of skepticism around the possibility of flight until the Wright brothers proved it to be possible, they also didnt require a lot of money or expertise to do so.

How Ironic - A Chinese guy talking about openness and sharing, about doing things for fun and passion instead of for business. If that's true, that represents a real paradigm shift in the East, where Asian nations have been notoriously focused on doing things for striclty economic / industrious profiting purposes only. How can such a passion-driven / innovative culture exist in an oppressive Socialist environment, where the people who drive those innovative ideas are not rewarded for their hard work and sleepless nights? The U.S.'s intellectual property laws and Capitalist structure have been superior to creating an innovative hub for innovation, especially in California and the West Coast. Don't forget the "startup culture" started in Silicon Valley, China, India and Tel Aviv Israel are simply seeing the economic value of it all now and ruthlessly copying the West (a Peter Thiel quote). The problem is, they're taking credit for ALWAYS being that way...It's like someone who jumps on the bandwagon of a favorite band or music artist after they've been topping the charts and selling out concerts for a long time, then claims "oh yeah, I've always liked them. I was into them way back in the beginning, BEFORE they were famous!" B.S. Also, in Los Angeles many people have been creating things and making things for fun for the last 100 years, whether it be film, artwork, design or entertainment. I couldn't imagine a thriving, creative Chinese film industry given it's current economic situation. *Disclaimer - my girlfriend of 5 years is Chinese American (from Hong Kong).
