This video is aimed at the average consumer, who is not tech savvy, but interested in learning about the basics of wireless. This information is especially helpful for someone who is looking to change wireless carriers, but continue using the same device. In this video, I talk about the difference between 3 types of cellular networks- GSM, CDMA, and LTE.

BEST explanation on the subject!!! On November 2022 I bought a Samsung A03s and a friend told that the reason I got such a good deal was because Verizon is dumping its CDMA network and my phone might become obsolete. My phone has a SIM tray so maybe I could extend its lifespan, still researching!

I think the video is slightly confusing in terminology. GSM is actually 2G. As I understand here is the path that 'GSM' telcos had: 2G: GSM [SIM] > 3G: UMTS (WCDMA) [SIM] > 4G [SIM] and CDMA telcos: 2-3G like: CDMA > 4G [SIM] Both are headed to the same 4G, but you can see that 'GSM' 3G is actually also using CDMA (coding), just wideband. Of course it doesn't make 'gsm' and 'cdma' networks compatible...

Best explanation I've come across. The 1X was a bonus. What about the "EV" for those old clunker CDMA phones? EVDO? (Not to be confused with Rachel Ray's EVOO). My everyday phone is a CDMA folder from 2007... Which is why I'm here, trying to learn about LTE. :-)

Thank you Matt Veru good video and nicely explained ! I wonder, any thoughts on which technology, that is LTE(4G) or GSM(3G), uses up more battery power. So, assuming my mobile phone has the capacity and is in an area with access to both LTE (4G) and GSM(3G) would forcing it to a specific technology be less demanding on the phone-battery Thanks

This is so helpful! I just began a new job working with cellular devices and I couldn't quite grab the idea of GSM and CDMA until watching this. So with understanding that AT&T is a GSM carrier, could someone hypothetically purchase and AT&T pre-paid device and move the SIM card from a post paid account's device into it? ie. AT&T customer had an incident where they broke their phone and they now want to purchase an AT&T GoPhone to move the SIM card into? Would it work?

Hi. I have a LTE OnePls 7 Pro phone and am on T-Mobile/MetroPCS. I am having a heck of a time trying to use the dang thing. It used to work and now it doesn't... I must have changed a setting and messed it up. I took it to Metro/T-Mobile store and they couldn't figure it out. I am able to connect for a few minutes via Direct Share (Roku Device), but it doesn't last. The phone does work sometimes in voice, but it's not reliable and trying to use the internet involves trying to connect for about 45 minutes for 5 minutes online...Help? Pleaseeee?

So any GSM SIM can be switched over or used with any GSM Carrier right? Example: I buy a phone from At&t. After its unlocked and paid off, I can take my phone to T-Mobile, Cricket, Tracfone, etc.. and I should have no problems. Is that correct? Now for CDMA, (Verizon, Sprint, Boost Mobile), I cant use any of the GSM services BUT, the way im hearing it is, not only can i not switch the phone to GSM, but i also cant switch between different CDMA carriers? Example: Switching a Phone from Verizon to Sprint. Is that correct? I cant do that? Can I go from Verizon in one state, move across the country (USA) to a different state and use it there? Sorry for all the potentially dumb questions. Im having a hard time grasping this stuff. Thanks!
@MattDiehl639
@MattDiehl639 7 жыл бұрын
+Anthony Anderson 1.Everything you mentioned about GSM phones and unlocking them is correct. 2. You are correct that you can't use a CDMA phone on a GSM network (and vice-versa). 3. Most of the time, you cannot move a CDMA phone from one CDMA service to another. SOMETIMES you can, just consult the carrier you want to use. Sometimes, I was able to move customers' Sprint (CDMA) iPhone 4 phones to CDMA prepaid brands that ran on Verizon (CDMA). I know it's confusing, but you got it right.

Wow someone finally answered this question I've had for a very long time lol. Thank you good sir! Now I have one more question if you don't mind... Since all 4G LTE phones now have SIM cards (Even CDMA), that doesn't that they are necessarily compatible with each other now right? Just because AT&T uses Sim Cards but so does, lets say a Verizon Galaxy S7 (the phone doesn't matter, just throwing a name out there), That doesn't mean I can now take my At&T SIM and throw it in the Galaxy and it will work right? Or the other way around. Take my at&t phone and get a Verizon SIM. You said every once in a while you will get a phone that is compatible for both (like the iphone 4), is there anyway way to find out if the phone I have will be one of those lucky phones? Like a website perhaps? or anything really? Again thank you so much!!!
@MattDiehl639
@MattDiehl639 7 жыл бұрын
Anthony Anderson You actually could use a VZW 4G phone on a GSM network. HOWEVER, (while an actual AT&T or T-Mobile SIM card will likely work), some of the prepaid brands that piggyback off of those 2 carriers won't let you use a VZW 4G phone on their service, because their network will see your phone's VZW IMEI.
@Sinnbad21
@Sinnbad21 7 жыл бұрын
Matt Diehl so then how will I know if a Verizon phone that I purchase will be compatible with a GSM carrier for sure? I see these guys selling Verizon phones on eBay and they have them unlocked to work with like 3 or 4 GSM carriers? How are they doing that?
@MattDiehl639
@MattDiehl639 7 жыл бұрын
Anthony Anderson Most of VZW's 4G phones come unlocked out of the box. If you go into the settings menu of a VZW Android phone, you can change the radio mode to LTE/GSM. Once you've done that the phone can work on AT&T & T-Mobile. Keep in mind you won't get LTE or software updates without connecting the phone to VZW. If you want to use an unlocked VZW 4G phone on AT&T or T-Mobile, I would advise against buying a SIM card thrpougj anyone other than those 2 brands. Also, I'd recommend buying a used phone through a site like Swappa, rather than eBay. There are people who fraudulently purchase phones, and then sell them online, after the carrier blacklists the phone. Hope this helps

All you should have to do is go into that VZW LTE phones' cellular radio settings, and change the preferred network from LTE/CDMA to GLOBAL or LTE/GSM (or WCDMA). However, that phone won't get LTE connectivity unless it is running on Verizon. Plus, on T-Mobile, your Verizon phone (if it's an Android) will not be able to get software updates.

Hello, I bought a Samsung Galaxy 6 Edge Plus Verizon Unlocked Phone from Best Buy a couple of years ago. I recently changed my phone service from Metro PCS TO Verizon and the plan sucked and was wayyyyyyyyy too expensive, so I tried to connect my phone with Sprint. The Sprint Representatives told me that my phone is incompatible with their service. Is there somehow or someway, some trick to make my phone compatible with Sprint? my friends have Sprint and can stream videos, make phone calls, and text in the buildings, whereas my phone cannot receive any connection. Says (Network Connection Lost). I have switched to tmobile for the moment.
@MattDiehl639

+Richard Melim Unfortunately, to use Sprint, you'll have to buy a phone from Sprint, in most cases. CDMA a more restrictive technology, plus Sprint uses an odd set of radio frequencies. The only unlocked phones I believe you can bring to Sprint are the Nexus 5, Nexus 6 5X, 6P, and the Pixel.

I have a Samsung J3 Prime 4G LTE and I brought this phone to Consumer Cellar. They put the sim card from my older Consumer Cellar (Envoy) flip phone into the Samsung and it works fine. I received a notice saying I'll lose my service because its an older phone. I gave my IMEI number to the online chat rep. at Consumer Cellar. She said my phone is only a standard 4G and not a VoLTE 4G. It clearly says 4G LTE on the front of my Samsung. All I thought I needed was just a new sim card from Consumer Cellar. The rep. said I needed a new phone. With this information, do you think I need a new phone because this phone is really out dated? I love this Samsung.
@MattDiehl639
@MattDiehl639 2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like your Consumer Cellular phone runs on AT&T. I recently got an email from AT&T saying that they're going to shut down their 3G network in February, 2022. Even though I was using a 4G LTE phone like your Samsung, 4G phones need to be able to connect to 3G as a fallback for when 4G service isn't available. When AT&T shuts down its 3G network, 4G phones without VoLTE, won't get voice service without 3G. VoLTE (or voice-over-LTE is (in plain engligh) the ability to make voice calls through your phone's data plan. Some 4G phones have voice-over-LTE, others (like your phone and mine) do not. Overall, your 4G LTE Samsung has to use 3G when you make phone calls. When AT&T turns off its 3G network un February, 2022, you'll have to have a phone that has VoLTE, to make phone calls. Your current phone is apparently missing that feature. I hope this helps.

Araya Khan It depends. Although most of VZW's own 4G postpaid phones are already unlocked, I'm not sure if their prepaid 4G phones are unlocked, as well. As for phones on an MVNO that uses VZW (e.g. Straight Talk, Total Wireless, etc.), those phones will only accept the one SIM card that comes with the phone. You'll have to talk to your service provider to see if it can be unlocked.
