There are more upsides to this type of tech. When comparing this to the steps one needs to take is shocking. With wired EV chargers, there are actually 18 steps to charge the car. With induction, it's only four steps. Here's the breakdown: Conventional EV Charging Steps 1. Drive up to the charging station and park your EV near it. 2. Turn off your vehicle. 3. Gather your payment method (credit card, app, etc.). 4. Open the EV car door and then close it. 5. Walk up to the charging station. 6. Authenticate or activate the charging session using your chosen payment method (credit card, app, etc.). 7. If necessary, swipe the card, enter a PIN code, or confirm payment through the app. 8. Remove the charging cable from the charge station. 9. Walk back to your car. 10. Open the charging port on your EV. 11. Plug the connector into your EV’s charging port. 12. Monitor the charging process, either through the station interface or your vehicle's system. 13. Once charging is complete, safely disconnect the charger from your EV. 14. Close the charging port on your EV. 15. Walk and carry the large cable and charge connector back to the charging station. 16. Walk back to your vehicle. 17. Open the door and get back in your car. 18. Safely back out of the parking space. Induction EV Charging Steps 1. Park your EV head-in to an available parking space. 2. Open the app and select the minutes to charge your vehicle. 3. Wait comfortably inside your vehicle if you desire until it’s charged. 4. Safely back out of the parking space. Just think about the time, productivity, and money saved over time by using this technology.

I've been following EV and power storage doings for years, and this is the first coverage of wireless charging I've seen (a brief mention of a trial in Scandinavia piqued my interest, but there was no detail or follow-up). Thanks! I'd long wondered if emitters embedded in roads could be a better solution than charging stations. Good to know there are applications in the works.

Search Björn Nylund videos, he have made few videos about wireless charging. I have used industrial induction heater. I was told not to wear wrist watch because this induction field would magnetise and ruin the mechanism. IMO

Many automotive supplier companies were chasing Wireless Charging a decade ago... most dumped development of it several years ago. The market for Personal EVs just ain't there yet.... there is a limited Commercial Fleet EV market now, but nothing large enough to interest major suppliers.

Tell me a small solution to the difficulty of charging the battery quickly. We can keep batteries at charging stations. We need to make a way to exchange them. You can give the dead battery and get a new battery from the center. During the exchange, there should be a count in the center about the number of batteries that have gone and gone. 😊

Power conversion technology has dramatically improved due to better semiconductors and switch-mode circuits. Prices have been driven down by moving manufacturing to Asia (not always a good thing). Conversion efficiencies >95% are now required so this could be a challenge to wireless charging. However, self-alignment and close proximity can help this and made transparent to the user. As a power conversion engineer, this video seems quite reasonable. Nice job, guys.

Even if more efficient it still wastes energy while the world is experiencing an energy crisis and rising energy prices. I can see this being useful for the autonomous taxi fleet but needlessly wasteful for personal use.

Wireless charging can work as long as there is a universal standard. Also good marketing to let everyone know it exists and how it works. If the wireless charging was available in store parking lots, airports and apartment complexes it would be really useful.

What I think is the next step is variable charging over a 24 hour period, sans the V2G part. This is as in you park (and plug in) and opportunistically charge as the grid is ready. Kind of like a variation on pumped hydro where the water only runs downhill, but you vary the amount of hydro generation throughout the day instead of using a base load configuration. For example the Bonneville Power Project in the Northwest USA can generate up to 33 GWs of base load power with water flowing through a series of reservoirs, but if you added more generators, you could slow down the flow when say solar power is generating the most power, having that water store up in the reservoirs and then in the evening as the Sun goes down and people come home and turn on thing, turn on the extra generators. So instead of say 33 GWs continuous, maybe mid day you put out 10 GWs while solar is at its peek and for 4 hours in the evening when you need the most power, you put out 60 GWs. With the 24 average staying the same as you still have a fixed amount of water to work and huge reservoirs to buffer with, it should all work out. So getting back to EV charging, even if you don't go the extra mile to put energy back into the grid, just varying the charge rate is as cheap as a firmware update to have the car talks to a central server to coordinate its charging and maybe some additional charging stations in parking lots and such allowing EVs to remain plugged in all day (as they sit in the parking lot / structure at work for example).

For me, personally, the 5 seconds it takes to grab the charger and plug-in is just not an issue. Furthermore, the losses associated with wireless charging is more of an issue for me. Saving $$$ is one of the great reasons I drive an EV, but now we are going to spend 20% more on charging for a "convenience"? The ideal market for this just isn't residential owners if you ask me. I see this being, as noted, a benefit for any Autonomous vehicles, or city transport that stops and waits (buses, taxis, etc.) at various locations for a few minutes here or there.

Agreded. But it will haGo on the lane, your smart phone chares your time of charge.ppen for trucking, transport of heavey goods, long trip hauls, ect. I can envision a single lane devoted to this.

Have a mechanical direct connect to the axle of EVs and solar, to super charge them. No more plugging in. I've designed a generator that keeps charging and running by itself. If you move in any direction, you dramatically increase the output of energy. Use V2G tech to transfer extra energy to the power grid so your circuits don't get overloaded and you help everyone else run everything.

We could have an existence where we live far better lives. We just need leaders who actually care about humanity and progress via the latest tech.

I love the idea but remember how inefficient wireless chargers are. I cant imagine powering your house with your car without losing a good fraction of your charge just to power transfer. Its definitely not ideal for power efficiency.

Not only inefficient. But, where is that 20 percent of emf going to go. That's 2kw of electricity blasting out into the environment. Assuming it is running on the 240v 48a. This could possibly screw with almost all electronics in your house and not to mention how some crazy people feel about 5g. The fcc would also probably never approve something like this. This is a very bad idea in my opinion. Just uses a robot arm with a charging connector or industrial size pogo pins.

@@curtisrader957 even if It gets to 5 percent that's still a lot of emf. Imagine if every single house every single City had that. The amount of protection would be astronomical. I love the idea but. How are they going to protect everything. I mean airplanes don't even allow you to have cell phones on because of the EMF. Why would it be ok for every house an city in the world. It would have to be efficient to 99.9 percent Because, what the advancements of electric cars they're going to need more and more energy. Not to mention electric semis which are going to need an astronomical amount of energy. The Tesla semi needs 1mwh if electricity to go 500 miles. While most semis can go 1000miles. That means if we advance batteries they would need 2 mwh. That can power a city for 2 days straight and we are going to have thousands of semis on the road just like that. I know most semis drivers aren't going to wirelessly charge but that's just an example of how crazy you can get.

Flooded or heavy rain roads. Would the car note the conditions and take action? I know that the battery pack is sealed but if immersed? No good would come of that.

You should watch videos of Tesla cars driving on flooded roads, it's really not much of an issue. They aren't ICE cars that require air inlet and ventilation for their engines to run properly, worst case the EV would just float for a bit, since everything is sealed airtight.

The efficiency problem isn't even the biggest problem. The idea of having charging infrastructure in even a fraction of our roads is just a non-starter. The cost would be insane, and frequent construction would be a nightmare.

if you charge your phone using wireless shargers, you notice the phone gets hot. that heat is an indication of inefficiency. it will cost more and take longer to charge an EV using wireless systems. embedding the coils in an EV and in the roadway are expensive. in short, wireless is a pipe dream right now.

$10k for a 7kW vehicle to home/grid inverter. Weve list power for 17 hours due to flooding in the last 5 years Near Brisbane Australia. Further North and South of the city the grid suffered much more significant damage, and would make V2H a viable option. If it cost half the price plus installation, I'd consider it for resilience, and minor savings. Lots of usable kWhs available from our Nissan Leaf.

There is the notion of super-caps ( ability of capacitors to rapidly take on a charge and store energy, the dump the charge into the batteries ). This technology is in F1 today.

Omg NO! Its another transition loss > 30%. AC DC conversion loss is nothing compared to wireless loss. This could make elec cars as efficient as smart cars (50 mpg range) with end environmental impacts.

This isn’t new. I was surprised to see this on this channel. I remember WiTricity showing on Ted Talks in 2009. It was a very good demo and I thought this would be commercialized in a couple of years, definitely in five years since Tesla was making a name for it self.

The infrastructure and refitting of possibly hundreds of miles of roads would be a monumental task not to mention costly especially as it will be wasting energy this idea could work but at the moment it doesn’t make sense with current technology

A good bit of information about wireless charging. However, your initial assumptions that it is necessary for robotaxi or Tesla semi viability is not logical, anymore than taxis or semis using gas have not been viable theist years.

It's a shame that the CCS standard does not support bi-directional charging. Having V2H via my charging cable would be great. That said I'd like to see Tesla include (optional to start with) this form of wirless charging, and discharging. I hope Tesla and WiTricity can get together for some official trials soon.

Power in the roads isn't something that I see as a possibility even in the distant future. It is too expensive and certainly wouldn't be built in advance of need. Most roads don't have access to power.

An autonomous vehicle will have no problem aligning itself with the charger, be it wireless or direct connect. Automating a direct connect, probably using a port on the belly of the car, seems much easier, and probably cheaper, than wireless. A direct connection offers the added benefit of faster charging times than wireless, so why even go there? The REAL issue is charging times. Getting charging times down to 10 minutes or less is the true game changer.

Adding power to the grid. Imagine if we do this with your refrigerator. So the neighbors Are out of milk; and they can open your garage door go to your refrigerator because they’re out of milk. Problem is;Now you’re out of milk. Or your car is out of electricity, and you’re stuck at home waiting for the power to come back on.

An un needed luxury for the home?? I park outside. Would mean no messing around with plugging it in in cold winter or rainy weather as well as ice storms.. Since I”m outside it would be a god send. Park it and leave it. Snow falls. It will not get into the charging port if I’m using wire less. Snow on charger when I get home. I’ll have to wait and see if I have to clean that little bit of snow off first.

Fuzzy logic. It's not induction but it's an antenna? 92% effective with no need for precision parking. And It's a niche so narrow that it was already abandoned. The will to be hauled privately all over the place without having to engage with another human is really strong. I have no clue why. The trend of people not wanting to talk -just text is also strong. The introvert non engaging synthetic behavior is not a way forward. It will just produce people that can't look another person in the eye and answer a simple question. Shy, not fully functioning scared people. People behind screens.

Elon Musk has stated that they won't use this wireless technology because of its low efficiency. If it's 92% efficient (and this is probably a very optimistic number) then you still lose a lot of energy if you charge a car with it and a lot more if you charge a semi. And also the claims of being able to charge at 500 megawatts or even 1 gigawatt, I first have to see! There are a lot of these claims being made but in the end it is often too optimistic. I think you are wrong on this one.

What effect will a person with a medical implants have for a EV nobody has answered this a person with implants have to keep a distance from many things because of the effects like a metal detector and cell phone so can this person even ride or walk around an EV ?

No, No, NO! The amount of waste makes this concept totally uneconomical. The entire reason the Tesla Charge Port opens and closes electronically is to allow autonomous connect/disconnect.

Ya semi insane thinking. First while there are a few experiments charging busses they don't charge every vehicle on the road; doing so would crash your grid immediately. If you did have upgraded grid and power production to do this; it would be massively expensive; if you are talking doing this all over the world or in even in a city? It would reduce battery size which would help EVs be green which they aren't now.
