My favorite thing for repeat setup with a lot of special endmills and drills...in the program after M30 as a setup area tagged N0 (unused by my CAM for line numbers), auto length seq/rando, come back and auto length and diameter with length set to #2001-#2200 for the tool number. Repeat job so I know the rough diameter of the tools for the second half of the template. Load all the tools off the cart, hit go, stick a corner or block center probing cycle after it - search down N0, hit go. Add some bore measuring and tool compensation on block delete or macro, hit go. Two dozen tools and +/- 0.0005 parts before my coffee cools down enough to drink.

Nice concise video. Thanks John. Just curious why you write to MDI and not to clipboard and then paste to Your program. Is there an advantage to MDI or is it just Your preference?

Great video John, learned a few extra things. Can you explain what the tool length offset the probe inserts automatic is? Rather, if it writes 4.000, where is this # compared against. Also, can you describe setting a length on a non rotating tool with out using the table probe. Thanks for all the video training

Keith Hansen - When you probe a tool and get a value of 4.0000” that is the approximately the length of that tool from the tip to gage line on the spindle. Gage line is a theoretical intersection of the spindle taper and the spindle face. When we calibrate the tool setting probe with a tool of a known length, we are telling the machine where the spindle gage line is in relation to the tool probe. If you calibrated with a tool that was exactly 5.0” long and then measured your cutter and the offset was exactly 4.0”, your cutter would be exactly 1.0” shorter than your calibration tool. To manually set a tool length offset when you have used the spindle probe to set the Z-axis work offset, make sure Setting 64 (Tool Offset Measure Uses Work) is set to ON. First, set the Z-axis work offset with the spindle probe. Then, make sure that work offset is active. Manually touch your tool off the same position as you set with the spindle probe and press the [TOOL OFFSET MEASURE] key. Your tool length offset should be a positive value, just like when setting the length offset with the tool setting probe. Setting 64 (Tool Offset Measure Uses Work) changes the way the [TOOL OFFSET MEASURE] key works. When this is ON, the entered tool offset is the measured tool offset plus the work coordinate offset (Z-Axis). When it is OFF, the tool offset equals the Z machine position. Be sure to turn Setting 64 back to OFF after setting your tool. I highly recommend that you do not make a habit of manually setting tools this way. It is very easy to press [TOOL OFFSET MEASURE] with the wrong work offset active. John

What would cause the auto non rotating template to not function or be selected anymore? We used to be able to select that function but now we can’t. So as of now we either use manual, or the other functions. Any information on this will be very helpful. Vey good content btw

An air blast dedicated for the tool setter would be a GREAT option. I have tried to use the tool break detection a few times but chips on the tool setter get in the way. The standard air blaster gets in the way all the time, especially with a trunnion.

Factory400 I agree. The Okuma I run has a air blast on the touch setter housing itself. I’ve had drills “break” on a VF2 because there was a stringer just on the tip.

I have a doubt if I would use this method to set tools offsets It means that the Z It Is on the top of the metal(piece), that It Is mean? and now all the programs will be Z on the top of the metal. If it could be, How the machine know the distance?

Touching off the tool length tells the machine length of tool. Your work offset tells the machine where XYZ zeros are. The tool length is used for tool length compensation and cut dia compensation.

@@jewstinebooboo I know but if you have a tool measure differents between probe and tool. for example: endmill 2.0 inches set up manual, offset Z-120.0 and probe 2.5 inches auto set up the offset will be Z-120.0, endmill and probe will be the same Z, Z-120.0 Is It that right? or It could be different?

Here’s a tip. If you need a break detection for your shell mill, you need to do 2 things. 1) Get your hearing checked. If you don’t hear a she’ll mill lose and insert or break, time for a hearing aid. 2) Stay by your machine more often. Remember, the machine writes your paycheque, and it doesn’t care if your standing by when it decides to get angry and break something.

Andrew Lang well if you’re going to invest time and money into a tool break detection set up, it’s because you’re not going to be spending too much time by your machine making sure it’s doing what you paid for it to do. ? Or

Pro Tip: Don't auto probe a face mill with diamond inserts. They will chip. 6 insert Iscar face mill loaded with diamond inserts ($100+ each). All ruined before they even cut anything..
