Navigation Station build out part 3:
Hello Friends,
On this episode we get into wiring up the AC power. This is the part of the project I was the most nervous about and AC / Shore power is very dangerous and no joke.
I made it out alive and got the AC system hooked up to the shore power switch and to the electrical outlet. Making progress on this massive buildout!
Fair Winds,

The other connection from a ring is a spade, which is the one that can wiggle out. Great insight this episode.

lots of great info. Keep handy some "Scotch Super 33" electrical tape in the appropriate colors when re-purposing wire. A little wrap of black tape on that red wire and a wrap of white tape on that yellow wire (on both ends) would let you or someone in the future know that the wire has been re-purposed and what the wires function/purpose is. Also never pull the tape to "cut" it, always use a razor/knife on the electrical tape, it keeps it from retracting and loosing/lifting off. I keep a single edge razor blade in the plastic case the tape comes in. Looking forward to more.

Another nice video. I use dielectric grease on all my connections. It really does slow corrosion.

Good video James as an Electrician of over 30 years and having worked in many countries and on all types of wiring from 66kV 66000 volts to 110V I still find it strange that in the USA the Live Wire (hot ) is black and the Black on DC is negative most systems I have worked on Red is Live Black is Neutral and green is earth on AC and Red is Positive and Black is Negative on DC I once worked on an oil rig being built for the gulf of Mexico and we had to wire every thing the way you are doing really tested us to remember to do it the US way any way I have watched all your videos and am really enjoying them oh one other thing if working on your AC remove the plug outside on the dock as well just to be extra safe even put the plug side on your deck so you don't get some good Samaritan seeing your cable switch is off and deciding to do you a favor and switch it back on that will really mess up your day keep up the good work

RIGHT? Its crazy to me that the HOT is black! My shore power doesn't come unhooked at the box on the dock, I did go switch of the breaker off camera and had the cord unplugged so that was the best I could do. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!

Never heard of premelted solder dripping... Ive seen some shit. Not that kinda shit. It is good to keep em seperated. Not on top of each other but stagered down by bout an inch. Great ideas! Clean and serviceable!! Good one!!

That Upside down plug is an argument that has been on going with electricians for decades. Among other things, I hold Journeyman cert's as an electrician, plumber and I hold a in Master in electronics systems (low voltage). Mount the AC outlet the way you want. the only recommendation I would offer is one that you have already covered... USE hard crimped circle connectors. That is over kill for buildings, but necessary for mobile equipment and damn sure for boats. If your boats grounding is correct and you are using adequate ground fault circuit breakers, it doesn't matter one bit which way the outlet is placed. I will put money on someone commenting to the error of my thinking. And this is the debate that will never be resolved.

Thanks for the comment Jamie, good to hear from an expert that it seems I did this job correctly. After I heard about the debate I searched and searched for the answer and just like you mentioned it seems like there are two camps on the subject.

@@SailorJames One thing I would caution you about is using AC outlets that have the built in USB charge ports. Not ALL, but some have a continuous "Trickle" draw even if you are not using the charge port. In a brick and mortar that draw is insignificant, but on a boat that is very energy conscious it can mean all the difference. I would connect any USB charge ports to your 12v house batteries, that way there is no parasitic inversion of your precious power when nothing is plugged in. P.s. I am no expert. Just a JOE IN THE KNOW. LMAO

Most AC/DC problems I’ve seen are from loose and corroded connections. Cheap clips and a lack of silicone grease. I swear by those heat shrink connectors!

They really make a difference and you never have to worry about them again if its all done up correctly!

the AC and DC distribution panels should be separate and at least there should be a cover behind the AC portion which is closed by mechanical means (screws) not easily opened.

I was surprised at how many people use boat parts on Dune buggy / Van / Jeep build outs, it seems a lot of automotive people are using Blue Sea Systems stuff on their vehicles because it is marine grade!
