Overview of the geography of Wisconsin. In this video I discuss the cities, natural landscape, economy, companies, taxes, food, and sports. I cover things from a nerdy standpoint and hope to make educational videos.
Records displayed: Timbuk 3 - "Greetings From Timbuk 3" - (1986) and Liberace - "The Best of Liberace"
Movie clip intro: Trinidad Silva as Raul Hernandez from the film "UHF" (1989).

The Southwestern part of the state has the "driftless area" which was not covered by glaciers making it very hilly and unlike the flat prairie land of most of the state. It's quite a beautiful area IMO and with no major cities is basically unknown.

I grew up in the Driftless Region. Locally, we would also call it the "Ocooch Mountains" (I bet there's an interesting history behind that, not sure). The foggy summer morning and multi-colored autumn views in those rolling hills are second to none! Devil's Lake, Perrot State Park, Ferry Bluff, and Parfrey's Glen look like something you would find in Appalachia or the Great Smoky Mountains. Definitely one of Wisconsin's best kept secrets! ;)

You forgot about Door County! It's very well known as the outdoors focused vacation spot for families here. It's located in the tail peninsula of the state, famous for the delicious wisconsin cherries grown there. They also make a ton of cherry wine there and have a number of beautiful small towns located along the banks of the Bay and Lake Michigan. They have a Drive In movie theater near a town called fish creek, a ton of small shops, and large protected state parks. A must see if you're visiting and want an authentic tour of Wisconsin.

Awesome to see my home state finally get a geographic profile! Overall, you did a very good overview. The only major physical geographical feature of the state you missed was the “driftless area” in the southwestern portion of the state, an area that glaciation did not occur. It is very rugged and unique compared to the rest of the state. Great explanation of the Kettle Moraine though! I live very nearby and have explored a lot of it, and it truly is a wonderful escape from urban Milwaukee. Thanks Geography King!

The high poverty rate of La Crosse is likely due to the large number of college students (and multiple campuses) in a city of only 50,000 people. Due to the methodology the Census Bureau uses, college students who are unemployed or work part-time technically fall below the poverty line. And La Crosse doesn't have all the medical, STEM and office jobs that Madison has, to offset the temporarily low earnings of all the college students. Also, La Crosse has a large suburb just to the north called Onalaska, which adds nearly 20,000 more people to the total urbanized area.

We do seem to have a rather large homeless population. City keeps trying to solve in and the areas they're given get trashed. Gave them a hotel and wrecked it, then a park and it was a total mess. Now they've moved to another area in town. Something needs to be done about it but idk what. Seems like they moved here recently (perhaps it is bc largest city in the area) and there does seem to be a bit of a drug problem that's increased lately. 😞 it would be a nice city if all those drug dealers moved away. Part of their market may be college students so this problem may be here to stay.... The other section of the city is health conscious so it's a weird juxtaposition. In the town I used to live in, Wausau, you never saw people jogging. Here everyone runs. Lots of biking here too, lots of dogs, great for people who love the outdoors.

Hey Kyle, really enjoyed this video on Wisconsin thanks! Some things I wish you would have mentioned were: Frank Lloyd Wright and his relationship with the state his buildings and influence can be seen all over the state and really adds to the natural beauty. When you are talking about major beer companies in Wisconsin I thought it was interesting that you didn't mention Papst. The Pabst Theater in Milwaukee was the 1st theater with electorate city and AC. The Pabst Mansion is worth seeing, in my opinion its filled with better art than the MKE art museum which still fasenates with architecture. New Glarus and it's only in Wisconsin rule is also pretty cool. Also worth mentioning is that the the Joan Of Arc church was transplanted from France to the Marquette University campus. Which also contains the largest public collection of Tolkien works. Kenosha is home to the dinosaur museum which has the largest collection of therapods in the world. When you said you liked our city nicknames you missed that the Dells is the waterpark Capitol of the world. MKE also has the nickname cream city because of the color of the locally made bricks and the origins of the name Milwaukee it self are pretty cool. The Packers have olny 4 super bowls, but before the 60s the league played for a traveling championship trophy which the Packers won more than any other team. So much so that the original trophy is on display in the Packers hall of fame. You mentioned the rivalry with the Vikings, but not the Bears which is the longest running rivalry in the NFL. Between the Bears and Packers there are 24 championships which is almost 1/4 the leagues existence. Some cool geological spots you missed were Devils Lake which has different rocks than all the surrounding area, and cave of the mounds. Again I really appreciate your video, thanks for giving Wisco a chance

Really enjoyed this as a Wisconsinite. I am proud of my state and feel strongly connected to it. Many generations of my family have lived all around Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula. Truthfully, winters in the city suck. It’s nice to get out of the city, ski and enjoy the woods or ice fishing. But if you’re working in the city, miles of slushy roads with people seeking refuge inside for four months a year can be depressing. The rest of the year more than makes up for it though. The sight of Lake Michigan through emerald forests is unforgettable and never fails to soothe my soul after a cold winter. It makes me feel lucky to call this place home.

Kyle, the badger reference at the start was hilarious. To answer your question months after the fact, Outagamie = out-uh-GAME-ee. Oshkosh has been the home of the EAA Fly-in for decades. Good guess, but Fond du Lac = fahn due LACK, rather than LOCK. Sheboygan has a twin city of sorts in Michigan via its pronunciation, but that one's spelled Cheboygan. Derecho is a Spanish word meaning 'straight', and unlike many words and cities in the US, this one didn't get Anglicized--deh-RAY-choh. You got me on the pasties, in that I know the UP of Michigan has them in abundance, I didn't realize they'd crossed the "cheddar curtain" into WI. My family attended the Lumberjack Bowl when I was a kid, and was held in Spooner when I attended. At the time, Wide World of Sports was big, and it was featured a few months later, and I saw myself in the crowd on national TV. Another pretty place that wasn't brought up is Door County, which is the majority of the peninsula going NE from Green Bay.

There is so much more about Wisconsin you missed (though I think you did a good job for someone that doesn't live here) you could do a part two for our state. Definitely visit Door County (you were so close when you were in Green Bay) and the driftless area of the state (which, if you're traveling to Iowa from Wisconsin you'd drive right through some of it), and where the driftless area meets the glacial area Devils Lake State Park has some of the best hiking trails and views in the state, a must see, in my opinion! Also, for agriculture Wisconsin leads the nation in Ginseng, cranberries, sweet corn, and soybeans. We are also third in the nation in potatoes. So our state is much more than dairy, which most people think of.

A couple things you didn't touch on. While Lake Winnebago is the largest lake in area, the deepest lake is Green Lake, about 25 miles southwest of Oshkosh, at 226 feet deep. Also, Lake Geneva is a huge tourist area that a lot of people from Milwaukee and Chicago flock to for a weekend getaway. Door County, the peninsula arm on the east, is also a huge tourist destination area and is where most of the state's wineries are. Baraboo, just south of Wisconsin Dells, is where Ringling Brothers Circus was founded in 1884. Green Bay is also the oldest city in Wisconsin with the first settlers coming in 1765. Oshkosh is home to the EAA, the world's largest air show.

Thanks for doing this on my home state, it was really good! As someone who has lived in Appleton and has family there, Outagamie County is pronounced out-a-game-E. Also, the Lac in Fond du Lac is pronounced "lack". I've lived all across the state growing up (Milwaukee, West Bend, Appleton and finally Neillsville and working in Tomah -- I made an arc) before attending the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where my minor was actually Geography. I love EC, it's a beautiful city and really fun to be in, there's so much to do, and I wish I could move back there. I do wish you would have talked about the Driftless Area. I think you may have lumped it in as just being the Dells, but the Dells is only one location within the Driftless Area, La Crosse is in it as well.

Lived in Wisconsin as a kid and it's one of the most beautiful places you'll see. Now the 40 below actual temps with windchills from 60 to 80 below they can keep. Also can get in the upper 30s and 40s at night in the middle of the summer. Loved the snow though. Seems like there's a lake every five miles too. Just a beautiful place.

Yeah when we drive out East we only make it into Michigan if we take a wrong turn, which I actually did once... It is funny, I am in the U.P. pretty regularly for fishing, but mainland Michigan is kind of a mystery to me. I guess it makes sense, being that we are geographically separated by what amounts to a small ocean. I was in Traverse City once for a wedding and it felt exactly like Door County Wisconsin. I know Michigan mostly as the place my wife hates because she grew up in Ohio.

Wisconsin is a cool state...one of the best in the nation. I was born in Chicago, but Wisconsin remains my favorite mid-west state. I will never forget being a city kid, but my dad (from work pal) was invited to his Wisconsin farm...1st time I got to chase chickens, feed horses sugar, play with big cows, try to milk one haha! This state has the BEST cheese in the nation and GOOD beer...how could you go wrong here? As an Illinoisan whose hometown is a border county, Wisconsin is our vacation destination. I have good memories of visiting the Dells, Devil’s Lake in Baraboo, and Taliesin, Frank Lloyd Wright’s second home and studio. I’m still in Illinois and I dream to move to La Crosse or somewhere in the Driftless Area. That’s something you forgot to mention about topography. Check it out when you have a chance. It covers four states. Sadly it only covers Jo Daviess County in Illinois. Right where Galena is.

Wisconsin has TONS Trails all over the state. A lot of them almost connect to each other. Fond Du Lac. "LACK" I think that's the first time I heard someone say it like you. AND Hmong think "MONK with a G". The reason the States Weather is because of the Artic Winds. But you described the state pretty well. I can't believe you talked about the Logging games and the Sausages run. Wisconsin has half the list for Drunkest cities.

And it's also got a lot of outdoor recreation opportunities, and its beautiful scenery, located in the driftless region, largest city in it in wisc, i believe. For some reason not many large cities in the west of the state. La Crosse is also known for its large Oktoberfest. It's headquarters of Kwik Trip which IMO is the best convenience store.
