TheICEgirl6100 someone went back and looked at the reviews of the book at the time it was published and they found that that scene was rarely referenced. So weird. I think when the book gained a teenage/YA readership, “the scene” gained the notoriety it has today. (I sure as hell was messed up by it when I read it at 12.) It’s funny. It kinda goes along with the book’s theme of adults not noticing things that kids/teens DEFINITELY pick up on.

Ruby, this novel wasn't written by the character. It was written by King and he is the one who created the very internal logic and premise of the act in the novel you cite as a reason for people not to find it dubious. No. it does not work like that. King is a grown man writing a scene like this in a book and so the complaint is that and not if the character he wrote to want the act is the one who should determine the merit of the act. it's like saying it's okay that a writer creates a scene of abuse because in the novel the character wanted it............oh....wait.
@doubtfulguest5450
@doubtfulguest5450 5 жыл бұрын
In King's defence, Bev was strangely sexualised throughout the whole book. Bev's description of the perfect donger was the first description I ever read. Her husband is abusive and I vaguely remember a scene with Bev and her dad that made me _wait wut_ as well as the sewer incident.. and maybe also gossip that she might be a bit of a ho? Then again, I also remember that Henry covers his belly button because Henry is a big boy and there are probably other unnecessarily sexual scenes or undertones at times. Perhaps King is confused about we fixate on just that ONE scene, when there's plenty of others to choose from too. Other than a disturbing layer of character development, the sexual stuff doesn't really add anything of substance to the story so I can see why they would leave it out of retellings. That and the whole 'really creepy' thing. I'd like to think that King was trying to play on invoking visceral disgust in back of the reader's mind, to enhance the fear in the story with some subconscious negative emotions. I'd really like to think that..

The child orgy was meant to symbolize their lost of innocence of being kids. Because the only way they could escape the tunnels was by becoming men and woman. Its still pretty weird tho. I think killing a horrific monster is enough for you to be labeled as a man.

Ive seen that thrown around, but i reread the book a while ago and it doesnt really come across that way. Bill is thinking when theyre lost in the tunnels that they lost some kind of power that held them together during that summer. And beverlys thought that only their love to one another would bring them out of the sewers hence the gangbang. Your explanation makes more sense but thats not really how it goes down. What really happened could easily be left out of the book and not make much of a difference to the story.

I've read a rumor that IT was written in a 15 hour coke and whiskey bender. No rest, no sleep, just coked out of his mind pounding away at his typewriter for 15 straight hours. King has never stated this was true but never denied it either. I think his answer was something like, "it's possible".

@@purplegorilla9592 I'd like to believe the coke whiskey bender thing, which could certainly be true, but 1100 pages in 15 hours? That's over a page a minute. If it's whiskey and coke, 15 hours isn't even that long. Let's double or triple that. I could see two days straight. That might actually explain the last 200 pages.

I was hoping Thug Notes would be a series like Death Note but set in east LA, where the protagonist is a genius from the hood who uses a death note to take out rival gangs and the police, all while being hunted down by an eccentric and aloof former member of a rival gang turned detective who can't sit properly and eats sweets all day, thus crushing racial stereotypes and providing an insightful look at gang culture in America through the lens of a paranormal thriller. I never thought of it like that! I always looked at the transition of adolescence into adulthood aspect of IT, but it never occurred to me that IT is just a reflection of our darker halves. Thank you, Thug Notes, for this new perspective!

Wait what the fuck...why? I mean that whole underage nasty is messed up and random. I understand that it might be there because It only attacks children and sex is often seen as a loss of childhood innocence allowing them to escape. However it still completely messed up that you almost forget that this story has child murder in it.

The orgy makes sense in the context of the plot (not justifying it though), and when King wrote It it was early 1980s it wasn't such a taboo subject.

Either that or Darkness at Noon, by Arthur Koestler. Usually I'd not be optimistic about something critical of socialism seeing the light of day on a KZfaq channel like this, but he did review The Fountainhead a while ago. (A book I am personally not much of a fan of, truth be told, but I will take what I can get in 2017.)
