In April 2018, Madfish celebrates Wishbone Ash, one of Britain’s most enduring and best-loved rock acts, by releasing a comprehensive deluxe 30 CD box set, The Vintage Years.
This box set is strictly limited to 2,500 copies and includes all 16 studio albums between 1970-1991, all of which feature bonus material including rare album outtakes, B-sides and 12 previously unreleased studio tracks. These are presented in mini-gatefold sleeves. Three of the 16 albums are currently out of print on CD (Nouveau Calls, Here to Hear & Strange Affair). The box set will feature brand new cover artwork designed by Colin Elgie, the original designer behind the award-winning Live Dates sleeve artwork.
There are 3 original live albums (Live Dates, Live Dates Volume Two & Live in Tokyo) and 8 previously unreleased live albums (on 11 discs) recorded between 1973 & 1980:
1.Portsmouth Guildhall 1973 (2CD) from the Wishbone Four / Live Dates tour
2.Southampton University 1973 from the Wishbone Four / Live Dates tour
3.Edinburgh Usher Hall 1976 from the New England tour
4.Marquee Club 1977 from the Front Page News tour
5.Newcastle City Hall 1977 from the Front Page News tour
6.Bournemouth Winter Gardens 1978 (2CD) from the No Smoke Without Fire tour
7.Guildford Civic Hall 1980 (2CD) from the Just Testing tour
8.Chelmsford Odeon 1980 from the Blowin’ Free tour
All music has been remastered from the original multitrack and ¼” tapes, sourced from Martin Turner and Andy Powell’s personal collections, and from the Universal Music and Atlantic archives.
Accompanying this thorough collection of repertoire is a 156-page coffee table hardback book written by Classic Rock’s Dave Ling, which includes personal photos, rare posters and flyers and collector’s memorabilia.

So beautiful to see these two old friends together as if no time has passed. Don't know what the issue is with Andy, but it would be a dream to see these two on tour together. Laurie's albums were my favorite period for the band, by far. I love both of them so much, with all the incredible music they made together. This warms my heart.

This is just great seeing two hugely talented ex-WA members reminiscing about the good old days. Such a shame that they're not a part of the band anymore. Ah well ! Great, thanks for uploading this. PS That WA box set looks stunning.

@@danvelgtr Precisely my sentiments. You meant pity Powell wasn't in the actual Wishbone Ash any more. Whatever Powell's calling his nonsense lately, Martin (and Steve! And of course Laurie! And Ted!) were always Wishbone Ash for me.

With the possible exception of Earth's natural beauty, this box/collection is THE BEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN. I was only able to see 'em once: San Diego, January '75. They were supported by Camel (!) Some halfwit promoter had the bright idea of sandwiching KISS between the two. Shoulda gone to the Long Beach gig instead - KISS wasn't on the bill.

I never would want to make any decision looking for "the best", regarding Ted Turner, Andy Powell and Laurie Wisefield. And, after all, it's not necessary - what could that be good for? All three "classic" WA guitar players have been and are now simply great, breath-taking, and they will stay deep in my heart forever. Just like drummer Steve Upton (please do not forget about him!), and, of course, Martin Turner: MT in my opinion always was the 3rd "guitar player" in the vintage line-ups, a tremendous musician, an artist of class, the voice of WA, and maybe - yes - the heart of WA. I've listened carefully to his "bass" parts and his vocals: Without this Martin Turner, WA probably would not have worked the way it did. By the way: I enjoyed some shows of WA = Andy Powells band in the last years, and I loved them more and more. Now, I will definitely enjoy Martin Turner's band live on his „1st Album Tour“, in Germany, Würzburg, "Immerhin", on sunday, 2nd of December 2018. And I will also enjoy Andy Powells WA on sunday, 13th of January 2019, again at the "Hirsch" in Nuremberg, Germany, not far from Würzburg! So, just to put WA's history some steps nearer to 2018/2019: Laurie Wisefield was the smiling face of vintage WA in those days. Andy Powell's great new partner on guitars, Mark Abrahams, reminds me very much of Laurie's smile. Maybe, the reasons for smiling are about the same?! And Martin's mates in his band are very, very near to the old WA spirit and skills, too! So, why should we compare or decide? Let's enjoy any WA we can get, now! Great package!

danvelgtr I think the opposite is true. For me, Ted and Andy were the perfect duo. Just see the richness of their harmonies and solos, not to mention the beautiful tones they extracted from their guitars. Laurie never got close to that in my opinion.

Saw wishbone 3 times with Laurie Wisefield, never got to see Ted Turner unfortunately also saw Laurie with Home before joining the band they supported Mott the Hoople at Wolverhampton Civic and completely blew Mott off the stage

Martin: "You look like a girl, mate!" LOL. I thought the same thing back when Laurie had the long hair and wore the satin shirts. But I bet the women loved him. Great guitar player. But I like them all, Andy, Ted and Laurie.

Damn, it's so nice seeing Martin (and Laurie!) again . . . albeit, around 45 years older than the last time I saw them, backing up Robin Trower (!) on November 2, 1973, at Winterland Arena, San Francisco (I looked it up!). I read Andy's book, and may I just say . . . umm . . . *pathetic.* I always felt that the classic backbone of Wishbone Ash was Martin and Steve (sorry, Laurie, but you're in Wishbone Ash, 2nd Edition!) Andy spends most of the book studiously avoiding any possible reference to Martin as a leader (or Steve, for that matter) referring to both of them with incredibly insulting language, while inflating his own role, page after page. I was expecting at least an insider's view of the making of Argus but I found a far better version of that on some classic rock website, not in Andy's book. I had no idea this package was out there . . . I shall be looking into it! And Martin and Laurie, heartfelt thanks for your incredible show that night 45 years ago (Jesus Christ! Tells you how old *I* am!) and also F.U.B.B., which my band started playing and had its only performance in a concert hall in Dakar, Senegal, in 1975 (tapes exist!) So . . .I think i'll just fire up the old credit card now . . .
