For anyone who didn't read the book, a bit of context on Dr. Yueh, since he was one of the characters that got really shorted by the film. He wasn't a delusional fool desperate for his wife's return. He already knew that the Harkonens had killed her, he wanted to be sure. Everything he did, betraying the Atreides, was towards his true goal: killing the Baron. And he knew that the Baron would never put himself into a vulnerable position unless he believed he was utterly victorious.

I suppose I need to read it again. One of the VERY few complaints I have about this movie is that the audience isn't made aware how significant that diamond tattoo is. The Imperial Suk School training is known to be absolutely unbreakable. The audience misses out on two things because of this. #1 Having that diamond tattoo basically makes a person 100% above suspicion. #2 It shows just how cruel and manipulative the Baron is. The fact that he fk'd Dr. Yueh's mind up bad enough to make him a traitor would seem like he had done the impossible.

This is such an intense and tragic scene in the books. It narrates him remembering flying kites with Paul when he was a little boy on the hills of Calladen. I had to put the book down after that chapter. So intense and saddening.

One thing I wish was added is the Baron's speech after killing the doctor, "I never trusts a traitor, even one made by my own hand." I think Ian McNiece sold it well in the Sci-FI channel series. Being both egotistical and intelligent (a rare combination), he wants everybody to know how clever he is. But I don't think it would have worked for Stellan Skarsgard's version of the Baron. He's introspective, not egotistical. More like a brute force of nature; a tornado that you don't see coming until the funnel forms right on top of you.

2:30-I find that little detail-of Baron Harkonen turning on his shield before leaning down to hear what Leto was saying. “But why,” one might ask. “Why take such precaution when there’s no obvious threat, no reason to assume anything is amiss or out of his control?” I think I have an answer. Vladimir simply feared the Duke of Calidan that much. Even stripped naked of all weapons and defenses, with his legions shattered, his household lost, his family apparently dead, betrayed and condemned to death by the Emperor himself, Leto Atreides still made the Baron afraid of him. And, as it turned out, rightly so.

That part was a tad rushed. In the book, it was Piter who killed Yueh. After, Yueh tells him “You think I haven’t gained anything for wife?” Leto on the other hand began hallucinating and Piter was asked to see what Leto was saying. Leto’s hallucinations made him mistaken Piter for the Baron. So he actually sprayed Piter, not the Baron.

Wild detail: The Baron doesn't slit Yueh's throat, he beheads him. You can briefly see Yueh's head in the Baron's hand as he turns, and there are two thuds, one where Yueh's body hits the ground and one where his head hits the ground. For all his gluttony and sloth, the Baron himself is still physically powerful and monstrous.

Ian McNiece's Baron was just the right mixture of egomaniac and intelligence that he made the comicbook-esqe Baron believable. But Stellan Skarsgard's Baron isn't egomaniacal at all. He's cold and intelligent. He doesn't telegraph his presence like a raging bull (Glossu Rabban), so that you know he's coming long before he gets there. 2:44 I like this moment better in the movie than in the book. In the book, while Piter and several guards do fall dead, the Baron just leans back and goes “well, that could have been dangerous!” and leaves the room like nothing happened. It was a strike to the face for any reader who thought Leto would go out like a hero, for the person directly in front of him to not have suffered even the tiniest bit. This, and the fact that the Baron has to slowly recuperate from the poison throughout the movie, puts a little more power behind Leto and the Atreides name as a whole.
@BLooDCoMPleX
@BLooDCoMPleX Жыл бұрын
That's not how it happens in the book. The Baron is never close to Leto to be poisoned and still barely manages to escape the room through a side exit. It's Piter who leans over Leto and gets a face full of poison gas since Leto thinks it's actually the Baron. It's in the Baron's own thoughts that he eluded the Duke's revenge only through dumb luck and that he might as well have died in that room. It's one of the very few times we see the Baron actually shaken by an experience, only for that feeling to be compounded when the Sardaukar lieutenant appears out of nowhere to order him around and reprimands him for the Duke's treatment. I like the movie's version as well, since it's more cinematic this way.

Was that in the books...? Cuzz I'll be very honest with you - if it wasn't I would bet a lot more money that was just unintentional xD Basing that on the assumption that the effect was made via a harness of sorta lifting the actor up and slowly "gliding" him towards the camera - the eery effect of not seeing his face as he glides would also allow for an easy hiding of the harness and ropes :p And yes, I could ofc be wrong - and I do hope I don't come off as too much of a buzzkill xP I just enjoy seeing and trying to figure out how effects in movies are made - a lil "spot the vfx and practical effects" game if you will.

@nexusvoid367 they probably filmed that same scene 5-10 times (or more), so if it WAS intentional, they chose to keep and use that version where he hits his foot on the table. It's not so crazy when you're creating something you care about, and every little detail or moment is an opportunity to showcase things like characterization and visual scrutiny, especially if you're adapting a text already so rich with tiny details like Dune. I get it, a lot of people have beef with "over-analysis", probably because they remember having to analyze a book in school that felt like only your English teacher cared about it. But it's a real skill, not just for consumers, but for creators too. It is how good media is made.

The camera shot framing is incredible in this scene: 1) at 1:10, the focus on Leto while the baron is moving in the distance, showing that the duke is completely defenseless and immobile (like everyone else in the room actually) 2) at 1:20, the subtle use of the dolly zoom (transtrav), as if the baron was the great white shark swooping down on his prey. 3) at 1:27, the slow appearance of the baron in the screen, invading Dr. Huey's personnal space. Holy hell, this is CINEMA.

Leto sensed memories rolling in his mind--the old toothless mutterings of hags. The room, the table, the Baron, a pair of terrified eyes--blue within blue, the eyes--all compressed around him in ruined symmetry. There was a man with a boot-toe chin, a toy man falling. The toy man had a broken nose slanted to the left: an offbeat metronome caught forever at the start of an upward stroke. Leto heard the crash of crockery--so distant--a roaring in his ears. His mind was a bin without end, catching everything. Everything that had ever been: every shout, every whisper, every . . . silence. One thought remained to him. Leto saw it in formless light on rays of black: The day the flesh shapes and the flesh the day shapes. The thought struck him with a sense of fullness he knew he could never explain. Silence.

Though not explicitly stated, Dr Yeoui cannot kill, which is why he had to use Leto as his proxy assassin. He stuns the guards as he initiates his betrayal of House Atreides, leaving them paralyzed on the floor with their eyes still open and aware. He comes closer to the Baron than any other adversary in this scene and the Baron, fully aware of the Dr's conditioning, makes a point of approaching him to well within striking distance and lingering there for some time, fully confident that the Dr simply cannot bring himself to do him harm. Otherwise the agreement with the Baron would have involved the Dr outright killing Leto himself in order to save his wife, whereas the current deal has the Dr bring Atreides down without directly killing anyone by his own hand. So much implied and understated in this absolute gem of a movie which only seems to get better and reveal more intricate details with every viewing. Not sure about poor Shadout though. Her death is the only thing i can't reconcile with the Dr's hyper-hypocratic sensibilities.

Well in the books the Baron kept his subjects under control by a combination of fear and greed/addiction. For most of henchmen he probably kept their families hostage via the threat of torture or slavery while providing them some form of "entertainment". I do know that the Baron kept Piter under control via his spice addiction, while it was deeply implied that said mentant was into many perversions (which considering the endless slave pits of Giedi Prime, the Baron was able to provide). As for Head Rabban, his voice was violence and (to a lesser extent) gluttony. With his uncle in power he was free to exercise those against the fremen. Only Fay was more difficult to manage, but he was the heir apparent. Which brings us to Dr Yue. Under the assumption that his wife was alive what would have kept him loyal to house Harkonnen? He hated them and would probably plot against them. In tandem, the Baron showed that the Sook conditioning could be broken, which would have created a mini-crisis in the empire. If the doctor of a great house was broken, then no one was safe. And with his wife dead what use could a broken doctor who could harm people be to the Baron. Thus it was best just to kill him off and hit multiple birds with one stone.

In the books, at least, he is not strong. Or particularly gluttonous. The story can get kind of convoluted. But basically, when he was a young man, the benegeserit basically blackmailed him for his sperm*. Things didn't work out well the first time, so they went after him a second time- and that's where things get fucky. Basically, The Baron is a horrible sadist who gets off on torture and murder. The first time he had a hard time keeping it up. The second time he beat on the Benegeserit woman to keep it up. The thing about the Benegeserit though, is that they have basically total control over their own biology. She basically had several varieties of engineered virus held dormant in her body to use as weapons of last resort- and she basically released a horrible degenerative disease on him that made it almost impossible for him to retain muscle, and easy for him to gain weight. The thing about the Baron was that he was *very* proud of his appearance. He had been quite handsome and his physique, immaculate. The benegeserit in question chose this virus *specifically* to torment him and make him miserable. These days, the baron cannot even move under his own power- he need an anti-gravity harness to get around. BTW, the child of this union would be Lady Jessica, Mother of Paul Atreides. So the Baron is unknowingly conspiring to kill his daughter and grandchildren. Not that he'd particularly care if he did know. *The Benegeserit have a Eugenics program. It's complicated, and if you really want to know I'll explain it, but the hows and why's are pretty involved.

It was a good choice, in the books the poison did absolutely nothing to the baron. He said something like “well that could have been bad” - the problem with that it is made the bro look powerless, you’re hoping he’s heroic and goes out with an impact but in the books other than killing the Barons mentat who was in the room (which ultimately lead to the Barons downfall) he basically died for nothing. The only way to make him look cool and heroic is have the poison do some damage without actually killing off a main villain.

I love how they made the Baron menacing and disgusting at the same time... One detail I really enjoyed was how he was chewing his food... mouth slightly open... as he has basically pre-determined that he was going to kill this man. The absolute lack of compassion and grace, combined with this... ominous menacing figure is a wonderful dichotomy. He's fat... he's disgusting.... and he's in control... boom

I love the atmosphere of this scene. At 0:17 the lighting and the way it's framed looks like a desolate renaissance painting.

ok I had never noticed how the Baron straight-up decapitated Yueh in this scene, I always thought that he just sliced his throat but now I realize that you can clearly see him dropping his head on the ground at 1:56

The Baron is so scary and menacing in new Dune. Yet Emperor call him flying fat man, imagine the power Emperor have.

Yueh should've told Leto about his situation. I'm sure Atreides would have figure something out about this.

I feel like Dune is everything Zach Snyder wants to and is trying to make, yet fails to grasp every single time thanks to him being unable to understand basic themes

@@marvils3683 Zach really wants to capture a similar dark-militaristic aesthetic and mature themes tackled in Dune but he lacks the skill needed to fully realize that kind of story. He’s decent at action but even then his reliance on slo-mo hinders more than it helps

For any non-dune fans wondering about the bull, lemme explain (some details come from the extended universe). That is a Salusan Bull, which were used in dangerous bull fighting. This one was the one that killed Leto's father, Paulus Atreides/Old Duke. Leto had the bull killed and mounted not only to remember his father, but as a reminder to never let his guard down.

Thanks for that, I was thinking it was some Harkonnen relic from when they'd garrisoned it previously.

Even better, they had the painting of the old Duke (wearing a matador outfit) hung directly opposite from the bull's head in the same dining room. And the bull's head was preserved perfectly, with even its horns still covered in blood.

@@xonxt yeah I remember reading and then realizing it was the old duke's actual blood they also had preserved on the horns of the bull. Wow......
