So proud of my DAR sisters and the communities that get involved so that these cemeteries and our ancestors are not forgotten.

I was brought to this video through an activity with my local DAR chapter. While I love all the individuals featured in the piece and their dedication to their work, I have to say Mr. Charles Cook probably brought me the most joy. His smile is infectious, but his passion is evident.

I am glad to see people showing and giving respect to these cemeteries and grave markers. There is very little respect for anyone or anything anymore in this world.😞

These beautiful old cemeteries are so amazing. Such a shame so many have been treated so bad. This is our history people. Don't forget it's just as important to remember your ancestors as it important to know our close family. Last year on doing family research here in the UK . I found I was related to a very well know highwayman who was hanged and buried. I went and visited him where he lies.... It was so amazing.

How beautiful. I clean stones and it’s so rewarding. If left with growth and mold. The stone will deteriorate.

Thank-you!! I love historic cemeteries!! I am grateful for historic cemeteries in the United States and in Texas. I do believe they are sacred! It is part of gratefulness to respect and admire these people whose lives made today's life possible! DO NOT use bleach! Use water and only approved headstone cleaning products and then water again. Thanks to all the volunteers!!! SAVE OUR CEMETERIES!

I commend your efforts in Texas. Here in Maryland, we are struggling to save our cemeteries. We have seen action from the beginning of our nation's history here, and we battle the ignorance, apathy, and greed everyday as we lose our historic cemeteries to developers. I have made numerous videos called "LOST MARYLAND'" here on KZfaq, documenting the struggles we face with these cemeteries. Keep up the good work, and stay safe!

My ancestors who came over on the Oregon trails were buried on their land in the late 1800s. Their graves once had markers but over the years animals and time eventually destroyed the Markers and any trace of them was plowed over. It’s very sad, but I am looking to get GPR out there to locate the graves!

What a wonderful video, and what a fabulous group of volunteers! I have always had an interest in old cemeteries and the history they reveal, as well as researching my own family tree. It is such an exciting, everlasting thrill to find someone you've searched for. Continue your heartfelt journies that connect us all.

One of my ancestors died of exposure and disease in a Confederate POW camp called Camp Crose, TX during the Civil War. His grave and those of others who died there are lost and unmarked, and the state has done nothing to find the graves or provide them with government markers. At least until recently the site was used for cattle grazing.

Many of my ancestors are buried at the Socorro Mission Cemetery near El Paso Tx. I thought it was an Historical Cemetery . I am of Piro Indian ancestry according to my 2 living aunts. I sent for a DNA test and it showed I was 34% Native American and my 2 aunts 44%. How ever, the cemetery is in horrible condition. I asked the Socorro Mission about the cemeteries condition. They told me it is up to the relatives to take care of the cemetery. Many of the old wooden crosses have fallen and rotting away. The names are no longer legeable. I was shocked by that answer for sure. Now this is one of the oldest cemeteries in Texas. My ancestors lived near the Socorro Mission for many centuries. My plea is to the THC to see if anything that can be done before all is lost.

Why dont u start a group of living relatives willing to volunteer? Unfortunately, the way to get it done is probably to do it yourself.

My take, Everyone's life is a book worth reading. It has Drama, Sorrow, Comedy, and Adventure. People that come in and out of our lives add to the story for better or worse. Every cemetery is a historical site. It might not have people that we remember or someone of notoriety but it doesn't mean there is no history there.

As a historian, I love old cemeteries. They are a very tangible tie to our past which should never be forgotten. In this modern age there are those who want to destroy our history. If they are successful, they will destroy our society.

Because cities don't have cemetery workers anymore. These were people who would go from cemetery to cemetery to clean, cut grass, report vandalism, etc. Now most cemeteries are privately owned. Family cemeteries it is up to the families to take care of. Also, people don't care and they vandalize. There is a law in Virginia that states that once a cemetery stops being recognized as a cemetery, then it's not and anyone can do anything with it. One of the schools in a district in Virginia that I used to work for discovered an old family cemetery fell on its property where they wanted to build a football field. They had to track down family members if they still were around. They were. At first they wanted the remains removed to another cemetery but eventually allowed the football field to be built on top of the cemetery and that's where those people are still buried. Sad to say the least. Even one small cemetery had a shopping center built around it.

I know that a lot of the very oldest headstones are virtually illegible. Has anyone ever thought of replacing these headstones with printed ones? The plastic would be much cheaper and long-lasting. It would probably be possible to photograph a stone, use computer technology to make out the inscription, then feed the design of the replacement stone into the printer.

Could you just spray the biocide on the headstone and let the rain flush the organic material away or is that a bad idea? Just curious

You can use D2 and Wet & Forget those are approved cleaning solutions by the National Cemetery Administration. www.cem.va.gov/docs/factsheets/Cleaning_Headstones_Markers.pdf Personally I recommend using Wet & Forget since it's cheaper and more readily available to come by. D2 provides similar results but is much more expensive. Both have different application instructions so make sure to read instructions prior to use.

I definitely wouldnt use vinegar! Suggested cleaning compounds are plain liquid ivory soap and water, "D/2 biological solution", and "Wet and Forget". These are as recommended by the National Cemetary Association. The full text regarding proper protocol for cleaning headstones can be found on the VA website, bymemorialday website, or the pdf directly at www.cem.va.gov/cem/docs/factsheets/Cleaning_Headstones_Markers.pdf The quaternary ammonium solution as mentioned in the video is also recommended for heavily soiled stones.
