Witness An Epic Overland Adventure Through Arkansas - You Won't Believe the Incredible Campsites!
This week we are arriving to the primary location for the trip to the Midwest, the Ozark Mountains for Arkansas. My buddy has a route planned that I know nothing about, and we are trying to find an epic campsite to next to the water so we can offset some of the summer heat. Temperatures are in the 90s and the humidity is insane. Watch as our quest for the perfect campsite results in being stuck in the mud, breaking down on the trail, and most importantly leads us to the perfect campsite.

Aloha my overlanding buddy, awesome road trip to Arkansas, humid weather just like Hawaii, we also had a hidden treasure like that back in Hawaii, people started talking about it, they abused and trashed it, now it's completely fenced off and closed to the public, again always awesome views and just keep doing what your doing out there, hope to join you on the trail, working on my jeep wj, stay safe and safe travels, see you lathas 👊👊

Thanks again Chris! Yeah, I can see Hawaii having real issues with spots being over taken with all of the tourism. What island were you/are you on? We rented an Fj a few years back and circled Maui, but as you probably know there really isn't a place to take advantage of 4wd. It was still an excellent trip.

Being from SW Arkansas, I used to go camping all over Ark., but mostly in the Ouachita Mts. because it was closer. However, I also found it was much less commercialized and that meant fewer people. I have gone camping in a 2 wheel drive vehicle and found places that I stayed for a week without seeing another person.

Just found your content! Thank You! Any chance on getting a link up with Mark as we have a group of about 4 maybe 5 that live in the Southeast (Fla / South GA) who normally do our yearly trip to CO/Utah but this year we want to do the Ozarks...here is the challenge...one rig is self contained (4Runner - Beast)...who like Mark has EVERYTHING imageable in his rig! but the rest of us pull small off road trailers and do not sleep on top of our rigs. So the challenge is to try and find a local who can assist us to at least NOT go on this trail with a trailer? We tried reaching out to Ozark Overland but they only wanted to assist if we paid them for a guided trip. TIA if you can assist. Trip is scheduled for the third week of June.

You keep saying Arkansas is in the Midwest, but…it’s not, ha. Having grown up in the Midwest, no one considered Arkansas part of our region. They are squarely in the South, as it has very little in common with the Midwest, particularly the climate. They don’t get bone-chilling winter storms like the Midwest does. Being hot and really humid is definitely more of a Southern climate. Arkansas’ culture very much aligns with the South, too. Anyways, just my two cents. Keep up with the nice videos. 👍
@IndependenceOverland
@IndependenceOverland 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah your right, it is pretty southern. Growing up in the Springfield area we always just called it part of the Midwest but actually looking at a map you certainly are correct. Thanks for letting me know for future videos so I don’t sound like an idiot 😂

Thank you For saying that bit about "protecting your treasure." When I go down the beaten path people always ask where I camped. I always tell them They can come with me but I won't tell them how to get there. Finding it is the adventure. Go find your own adventure. There are channels where people actually tag coordinates where they are. To me that is disturbing. Cmon. I use google maps. So can everybody else. Nice work. Love your travel buddy, too. Dogs are the best.
@IndependenceOverland

Yeah I try to only mention trails if they are already well known and popular already. I recently mentioned just the area of the Flat Tops of Colorado and I regret doing that. I have always been pretty protective of places, I think I will now start being even more protective. I agree with you, the adventure is finding it! And yeah, this old pup is quite a travel buddy! She is getting old and slowing down quite a bit now, it bums me out.

Hey man, Love the channel and would really appreciate your counsel on the COG implications of RTT and awning mounted on roof of FJ. I've heard from some drivers it's fine, while others have discouraged me from doing it (I'm looking at the BushCo TX27 which clocks in at a whopping 270 lbs, as well as their 270 Max awning which is 70 lbs). My FJ is also my daily driver, and I do spend a fair amount of time on the highway, sometimes reaching speeds of 85mph. How heavy is your tent and awning, and how did installation of them affect the handling? Would you put nearly 400 lbs of equipment up on the roof of your FJ (assuming you had a Bilstien 5160/6112 system and the 3" Icon rear springs? Really appreciate your help because I'm trying to make all these decisions this week as it's getting crunch time. Full disclosure: I've got Blackbear, Imogene, and Schofield on my radar for this July. Many MANY thanks in advance!
@IndependenceOverland
@IndependenceOverland Жыл бұрын
Dude your super thanks is awesome! I’ve never gotten one before! Thank you! That is a heavy tent! Holy smokes! The Alucab is around 180lbs I believe, awning is 65lbs. Shower tent is probably 25. Solar panel adds another 15 or so. My Fj is honestly the most top heavy I’d go with the vehicle. I won’t drive it without sway bars as it sits. I can do 85 and I feel safe doing it. Would I add another 100lbs on top of that? No I would not, but I know a guy that I’m pretty sure has the exact tent your looking at on his Fj and took it through Mexico. He doesn’t have the awning though.
@IndependenceOverland
@IndependenceOverland Жыл бұрын
As far as the shocks, with that kind of extra weight you might find that the combo doesn’t quite do it. I had icon Overlander springs and they weren’t enough for my weight, though I have a full interior build out as well as the tent set up. You will likely want stiffer springs both front and rear for the new setup, depending on how stiff they currently are. All that roof weight will shift when you brake and make the front of the vehicle squat more at stop signs, and the rear will squat as that weight shifts backwards taking off from stop signs. As far as this tent on trails, it’ll suck! Check out my Black Bear video I did recently and I was pretty tippy on some of that. Add another 100lbs to that and it would get sketchy! So ultimately, and I know you probably don’t want to hear it but no I wouldn’t get the tent. I know it’s got a ton of room, but that’s a lot of weight up there! And things like bedding start to add to it. Feel free to ask anything more, and I’ll get right back to you!

In general, are Arkansas trails wide enough for full-size trucks…Ram 2500?
@IndependenceOverland
@IndependenceOverland 5 ай бұрын
No, pin stripes on a mid sized are guarenteed. With my new truck build starting soon Arkansas has been in the back of my mind even. If I were to get a 6ft bed midsized truck, it would make traveling in those forests much more challenging. I am sure some trails out there can be traveled with a full size, but you will be limited.

Late to this party. I understand that the LR is a mystery to most, so I understand the hesitation of these two fearing its capabilities. As an LR3 owner, it was frustrating to watch this. First, that strut boot is nothing more than a dust cover, the same you'd find on any typical shock. So worries there. Second, the LR3 traction control is about the most sophisticated TC system out there. It can crawl about anywhere a full locker vehicle can, and that's coming from someone who has front and rear ARB lockers on his LR3. I just never really need them. Anyway, that's my defense of LR bashing.. 😂
