I’m in the same boat as you guys. I married a great man who is absolutely easy to respect because he acts respectfully. My mother, on the other hand, was married to a narcissist and the more she submitted and acted respectfully the more he took from her. When I acted respectfully towards him as I was told, more times than not he used it against me. I simply have to disagree that respect is not earned. I think anyone can ACT respectfully towards someone they actually have no respect for. And many men act shamefully. I would never tell their wives and children to respect them anyway. Act respectfully, sure, but you can’t force someone to feel respect if they don’t respect the persons actions. The same for trust. Trust is ABSOLUTELY EARNED. One more note… the passage in Ephesians is actually translated different ways, and one of them is “husbands, love your wives so that they will respect you” rather than “husbands love your wives, wives respect your husbands”. And 1st Peter has a direct command to husbands to respect their wives. So the popular notion that “wives need love and husbands need respect” isn’t quite biblical in my opinion. I believe wives and husbands both need love and respect in every relationship.

I would question the fundamental assumptions and biblical literacy of a translator who translated Ephesians that way. Wives respecting and submitting is not based on a single proof text, but across Scripture's precept and example; it also is founded on what marriage is a picture of - Christ and the Church. We need Abigails, for sure, but also Sarahs. @@simplyconvivial I’m not sure what fundamental assumptions you’re referring to. If you go to your strongs exhaustive concordance, or Biblehub online has a Greek text analysis, you can clearly see the second part of the verse is not a command to wives. The word for word literal translation from Greek goes as follows: “however also you according to individual each the of himself wife so let love as himself, and the wife THAT SHE MAY respect the husband” Emphasis mine. It seems to me that Paul is acknowledging that wives won’t be able to respect their husbands if they are selfish unloving jerks.
