You're 100% on point as to how manufacturers spec and or bulk buy filters (oil or otherwise)! My family on both sides all work for the big 3, assembly, engineering, trades etc. and in many cases it can be luck of the draw. I do believe that Motorcraft/Ford seems to be the most consistent as far quality and build consistency, but that's my personal opinion based on my experience. Again, great series!

Smaller particle capture means greater pressure drop (restriction) through the filter. Higher pressure drop means more bypassed (not filtered) oil. Superfine particle capture is much like training to piss higher up the wall only to realize that splatters piss all over you when you do it.

I now work for a Ford dealer parts dept.. I remember in 2010-2012ish The FA-1883 Looked a lot like a WIX, longer paper fins, heavier paper media... then they got thinner. and I noticed a sticker "Purilator" on the 3 pack bulb box of FA-1883 boxes. I bet its up to who makes them for the best price at the time of the contract. (as you said) Rumor has always had it there are only about 3 oil filter makers in the country anyway.. It's the acquisition of parts supply considering cost. What's the cheapest bid from a supplier that is good enough to prevent failures. I'm certain the contracts are yearly or a couple years, then everyone gets to renegotiate the supply contract, how much is paid, and some might find a company with greener grass, but it's still just good enough to get the job done for the least amount of investment to failure ratio. Corporations are full of good people in a climate that encourages and rewards bad decisions.

Hello sir. I’m not sure if you’ve already discussed this. I am a mechanical engineer so this is the kind of thing that I deal with a lot when it comes to choosing parts and equipment in bulk. I can see that as a good technician you know about what I’m going to say, but maybe not some of the behind-the-scenes things that I am aware of. Mopar will ask for bids to make an oil filter that can hold X grams of debris and has the ability to filter X microns. And then to filter companies like Wix and Purolator will provide bids. In the case where Wix makes higher quality filters on a normal basis, they may or may not retool to make the lower quality that is required by Mopar or if it’s cheaper for them to just keep the same exact manufacturing process and use their existing filter design. Just because one manufacturer makes any engine part, we can’t assume that it’s all the same quality. For instance Borg Warner transmissions can be made to last 150,000 miles using cheap bearings, tolerances, and synchros or the manufacturer can say we will spend all the money for the best bearings and metal for it to last 300,000 miles. Either way, 150,000 mile transmission doesn’t make Borg Warner a bad manufacturer, it’s just the money the manufacturer Wanted to spend. But in this case, when wicks filters wins a bid for Mopar they make millions of them and so they don’t have to cut their quality because the cost to manufacture each one goes down the more when you make more filters. That’s why there’s a bulk discount on manufactured items. But usually in these circumstances, Purolator will win the bid because they make the cheapest stuff and it cost them a lot less while meeting the minimum requirements of the Car company and it cost them a lot less, Mopar doesn’t care that they are less quality as long as they meet their minimum requirements. Another part of this is that their filter element might trap the same amount of particulate and filter the same size of media, but the construction of the filter is less quality be and will result In failure because the element isn’t supported as well and doesn’t have the low resistance pressure differential on either side of the filter element because it’s a lesser quality filter element. When it comes to things like this people either have favorites or they want to go with what is really the best and they’re looking for the data to show them which one is the best, or best for the money. If they always used Fram, and they think the Fram filters are fine, you can’t change their mind. Those people should just say “I like Fram even if they’re not the best.”

One other thought as i work for a major oe supplier is to remember the Mopar filter is going to be Built to Mopar specs regardless of the manufacturer. The identical looking Puralator or Wix may or may not be built to the same specs and don't take that lightly because what we build to oe spec is not what you can go buy at your local retailer in any way.

I don't know who makes this Mopar filter but at one point it was Magneti Marelli because Chrysler uses to own them, I think that you right about who makes what, I think it has to do with the supply line and contract,, they change supplier and the supplier make parts that fit the spec of the manufacturer.

It does make sense to me that the manufacturers would use oil filter company's (wix or whomever) to make their filters and then put an Ac Delco sticker on it. That's one less part that they (GM or Ford) have to make. Just like tires, the manufacturers use Goodyear or whomever to make the tires for their vehicles. Again, one less part they (GM or Ford) have to make. Great video sir 👍

Personally I have used fram oil filters before. Zero issues. But I change my oil religiously. Fram technicians test the shit out of their designs. They do what they are supposed to and more. Honda buys bulk filters from Fram. Honda would not stick their neck out if these were garbage filters. I order off Amazon. And get the best filter for the money spent. A lot of the time it's a higher mileage filter. Which is sold cheaper than the Fram! No brainer! People need to quit overthinking this. Everyone thinks they are an engineer.

Yup some manufacturers make many brands. Even vacuum cleaners used to go down the assembly line and paint one a particular color and the next another color sticking a decal Hoover on one and Sears on the other...then Consumer Reports passes one and fails the other....what?...I guess the color makes a difference! Way back we used to use Mighty spark plugs since they were our vender. At this time we were having problems with the center electrode. Plugs were going bad and coming back in a week with a dead miss. Same with Autolight and Motorcraft as they were made by the same manufacture at the time.

I've viewed manufacturing this way. For as many diff brands as there are out there. How many diff manufacturers are actually out there. So I ask my self, why such a price difference. I've found it comes down to the manufacturing tolerances, quality control, as well as patents. Im guessing the patents cause if you get an "oem" part from the dealer. It just fits and it works the way supposed to, barring failure rates, but the aftermarket doesn't fit quite right sometimes, but it works well enough that it meets the specs of the car and does what it's supposed to do.

I have been using AC delco filters on my GM cars since about 2002 including my trucks. They have fiber end caps so what? I never go above 4000 mile OCI with them. I have buddys that say you need to be using wix or K&N or some other performance filter. Why? I use AC delco filters and cheap synthetic oil and I change it way before the vehicle manufacturer says I need to. Never had a vehicle burn oil or had an oil related failure. I change it in the spring and then again in the fall. I think I will stick to my schedule.

I find it interesting that the FOMOCO factory supplied filters differ from the Motorcraft ones at the dealership. Cost perhaps?

I could make ALL oil filters better by just changing the name on the filter. Ron filters are the best.

It is like batteries. We only have 4 manufactures. But hundreds of brands, models, and styles. But oil filters are becoming even more important today. Would be nice to get a 5 microns oil filter. To clean the oil to the new oil spec. I have several turbocharged vehicles. And would like that extra filtering factor. Because of the coking problem. I would rather buy a 100 filters. Than an extra engine.

@@FordBossMe Better filtration is a big deal. There are situations and circumstances that are not theoretical. That better filtration is beneficial. It was 112°f at my house today. Up the road in Death Valley. The forcasters are talking about the record of 134°f, being broken. On hot days it is kind of hard to cool the turbo. And having a 5 micron filter would help keep any coked oil particles out of circulation.

Thanks for the great videos. I have a thinking out loud question. Is the OEM filters available for sale at like Walmart the same quality as one's sold at dealerships? Also second question. What is your thoughts on the Havoline oil. Walmart offer's a 6qt box. From $15 bucks standard oil to $20 full synthetic?

And the frame titanium and Ultra synthetic and the purolatorboss and the Wix XP and the napa platinum I would consider actually using the Bosch distance Plus I think that may be something I'm going to look into because it was a super heavy filter and there was a lot of filtering media inside
