the ramp trucks you're referring to are considered either a wedge-bed or a beaver-tail. wedge puts the front of the car higher, but gives you more storage space for tools & gear. the beaver-tail drops the CG for better handling on the road but you lose some storage... tradeoffs. your old trailer gave me some ideas though...i sleep in the truck at the track currently, and want more space.

Certainly one thing Bill you’ll never die bored, another question all your followers will be wondering “how much fiberglass will go on the new truck”? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Awesome video mate! Not sure those 2009 model transits can tow 3500kgs I thought it was up to 3T max towing and I think the payload of those trucks are 1.5T not 3.5T like you said Unless I missed something that is Nice truck for the money! Good buy

I used to tow my race car with a long wheelbase transit (5 speed predecessor) and it was such a great vehicle to tow with!! Good luck with your build!!

I've been kicking around the same idea, of building a ramp truck... Easier to haul around toys, and it's cheaper in tolls during travel.

We have a similar plan. They are a big thing in the UK and Europe. Have been looking for a while for the right length truck. Will attach our caravan, then the wife and I can run a single car at different track events. Current leader is Iveco dual cab. Will be an auto, so we can both drive it.

Yes the few videos on making a ramp truck I saw on KZfaq are UK ones, where the Transit is most prolific.

Looking forward to this. I have similar dual cab tray Ford transit conversion ideas in mind myself, so very curious to see what you end up doing.

Looks good Bill. Don’t know about NSW but here in QLD if you do remove the rear bench seat, you need an engineered mod plate for mod seating capacity. Also to make a superior vehicle and to make the sons Rx7 really happy- I suggest you enclose it with cladding or foam sandwich panels- the composites companies that produce it often have seconds. Could even go a roof top sleeping arrangement like the Apollo or Avida Motorhomes have- especially with your fibreglassing skills.

That's a awesome looking rig Bill!! What a score. Very much looking forward to see what you do with it. I had a Isuzu frr500 with a flat 4.6 meter tray that I used to tow our caravan and my race car trailer, my wife's suzuki vitara used to go up on the truck tray when we traveled with the caravan. A few times I tried to use the truck itself to load the race car, but with multiple ramps and having to pull splitter and diffuser off the car was a pain in the but! The tray was just too high. Though seeing this will give me those thoughts and ideas again.

Having a one piece flip up front end on my EG Civic Sports Sedan allows me to pop it partly open and get all the ground clearance any loading situation requires. My rear splitter never scrapes because under the SS rules it cannot go below floor height, so I have 75mm clearance there. But even if it DID scrape on loading I made it a clip in part held in with three bonnet pins, so it's super easy to remove & replace - although I haven't needed to actually do that yet.

Nice!!! Do they have any special driver's license stipulations for towing two cars w/ trailer??? Here in the US, anything with a combined weight over 11,000 lbs, both tow vehicle and all cargo (approx. 5 metric tons) requires that a chauffer's endorsement. The endorsement then clears you up to 23,000lbs, but only if it doesn't have air brakes. That automatically requires at least a Class A commercial license w/
@BillsBuildandRace
@BillsBuildandRace 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, we have similar rules here in Oz. Although my car transporter with a fully loaded trailer can tow up to 7,000kg you need a heavy vehicle licence once you get over 4,500kg. Thankfully however the total load of my son's race car, trailer and my own car on the truck will be under 4,500kg. So all good for our lightweight cars.
@OndreaS123

people rent large uhaul/rental tucks all the time that far exceed the 11k when loaded in the US without anything other than a class C license. look up the dry weight of a 28ft truck.

@@OndreaS123 Youhaul and the entire home moving rental industry kind of got grandfathered when they changed the law, the same goes for anyone driving a class A motor home. Technically, you should get the chauffer's endorsement if you own one, but most of the time the cops don't care about it. Car hauler's of any type they automatically suspect it, because so many small operator's try to get away without any of the proper documentation and insurance by claiming that it's personal use. One car on a trailer, no one is likely to hassle you, same for a ramp truck. More than one, you start getting attention.

I just drive my car to the track. Too bad aussie laws are so messed up. I hope you guys get back to democracy soon.
@BillsBuildandRace
@BillsBuildandRace 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's crazy how stupid & varied road rules are around the world. We Aussies watch you guys build insane cars & get them on the road, whereas most "modifications" (like just putting on a pod filter), are banned. All serious car mods have to be passed by strict engineers, so making a ratrod for example, is out of the question. But some countries are even worse. In Europe there are some that ban the use of ANY second-hand car parts - so there are no "wrecking yards". All "replacement" parts require a receipt. They have just applied this even to box trailers in Oz. You cannot get an old (or even new), one registered. You must have receipts for NEW axles, hubs, wheels, tyres, coupling, etc. It is the governments INTENT to outlaw old or home made trailers, leaving you with the ONLY option of buying a commercially manufactured one less than 5 years old. They didn't announce it publicly, you just find out when they knock you back trying to register one AFTER you have built it!
@SpecialTBK
@SpecialTBK 2 жыл бұрын
@@BillsBuildandRace I can’t say had any of those issues in QLD- thank goodness. Pod filters have to be secured and I believe in an enclosure. As for the trailer stuff- maybe down there? Never had an issue up here. Anything under 750kg is really simple and easy. Anything braked requires a ‘roadworthy’. I won’t get to find out with my next one either- it’s for baby tinnie and has new axle/bearings.

@@BillsBuildandRace according to the rta, your tare is 2750 and gvm is 4250. That tare seems light and might have been without monster toolboxes
@BillsBuildandRace
@BillsBuildandRace 2 жыл бұрын
@@chuxshed587 Two of the toolboxes are going, as is a heavy long distance steel fuel tank built into the hoop behind the cab. When being used as a car transporter the truck will also not have it's metal tray sides on it. I also will add virtually no weight to the tray with the modifications I am now planning, which will be different to what I have talked about so far in this first video. So my finished flat bed will actually be significantly lighter than what was on the truck in it's conventional setup. My race car weighs only 960kg too btw.... so I am gonna be MILES away from 4250!
